Now explaining craving (trishna). Because the cause is for producing projecting karma; And also for the immediate consequence. As it is said. Therefore, ignorance acts as the cause, craving establishes the connection, and all is initiated, thus establishing the origin of karma. Second, the origin of karma has two (aspects): 1. Its essence; 2. Its classifications. First, (its essence) as it is said: Volitional karma and karma of body and speech generated by it. Regarding karma, there are two: volitional karma (cetana karma) and karma of intention (cetayitva karma). The first, which is the volitional thought that is the fundamental motivation for the manifest performance of any wholesome or unwholesome action, is solely the karma of mind (mental karma). The second, which is the intention generated by that volitional thought at the time of actually performing the action, is related to all three: body, speech, and mind. Second, there are two classifications: 1. Classification based on essence; 2. Other explanations based on the method of classification. First, (classification based on essence) has two (parts): 1. Briefly explained by the root text; 2. Extensively explained by supplementary commentaries. First, (briefly explained by the root text) as it is said: Unwholesome, wholesome, and unmoving. All paths of karma, when summarized, are subsumed into three: unwholesome karma (i.e., sinful karma), wholesome karma (i.e., virtuous karma), and unmoving karma (i.e., defiled samadhi). Second, (extensively explained by commentaries) there are three: explanation of unwholesome karma, wholesome karma, and unmoving karma. First, (explanation of unwholesome karma) however many unwholesome paths of action there are, when summarized by type or main part, they are subsumed into ten: three of body, four of speech, and three of mind. Among these, the first, taking life, possesses five branches: (1) Basis: A sentient being with a distinct mental continuum from oneself. (2) Intention: Perceiving it as that (a sentient being) and not being mistaken. (227na) (3) Application: Killing oneself or causing others to kill by means of poison, weapons, spells, etc. (4) Affliction: Generally related to the three poisons, specifically perfected by hatred. (5) Completion: The one to be killed dies before oneself. With these five branches, the path of action of taking life is complete. If any branch is not complete, then even though there is fault, the path of action is not complete. This principle should also be understood for the subsequent (paths of action). If this (taking life) is classified, there are (those committed) through the door of desire, such as craving for meat, and through the door of hatred, such as holding a grudge.

...and offerings, like killing through ignorance, these are the three. Among killing, killing one who is both a father and an Arhat is a great sin. As for taking what is not given: The basis is: possessions taken by others, items dedicated to the Three Jewels, wealth of non-human beings, and so on. The intention is: the motivation to take through deceit, power, or stealth. The action is: doing it oneself or having it done by others. The defilements are: the three poisons in general, and specifically, the completing factors of desire and miserliness. The completion is: whether those objects have been moved from their place or not, whenever the thought of having obtained them arises. Dividing this, there are three types of taking what is not given: through power, like seizing things without explanation; through stealth, like breaking into a house; through deceit, like manipulating weights and measures. Among taking what is not given, stealing the possessions of the Three Jewels is a great sin. As for sexual misconduct: The basis is: one's own wife, and those not specifically given by others, such as relatives within seven generations, someone else's wife, a nun protected by vows, and so on, who are not to be approached. Also, inappropriate places like near the representations of the Three Jewels, and inappropriate times such as during the Sojong (restoration and purification) fast, pregnancy, menstruation, or daytime. The intention is: the motivation to approach those who are not to be approached (227b). The action is: performing that act. The defilements are: the three poisons, and specifically, the completing factor of desire. The completion is: when, due to the contact of the two organs, the pleasure of sensation is experienced and appropriated by craving. Dividing this, there are three types: those protected by kinship, like a mother or sister; those protected by an owner, like another's wife; and those protected by the Dharma, like a nun. Among sexual misconduct, engaging in misconduct with one who is both a mother and an Arhat is a great sin. These are the three types of bodily actions. As for lying: The basis is: an object distinct from oneself. The intention is: the motivation to speak, like saying 'I saw' when one did not see, with the intention of deceiving others. The action is: that act manifesting in the form of body or speech as a cognizable expression. The defilements are: completed by any of the three poisons. The completion is:
