afflictions. \t\t\tThe abandonment of that which is to be abandoned, destroyed by the antidote, \t\t\tand the nature of wisdom capable of abandoning and attaining. \t\t\tFurthermore, the continuum of the aggregates of appropriation produced by the karma and afflictions of previous lives, is the nature of the Truth of Suffering. The karma and afflictions that become the cause of future aggregates of appropriation, are the nature of the Truth of Origin. The abandonment of the Truth of Origin, which is to be abandoned by the antidote path, is the nature of the Truth of Cessation. The wisdom of the Noble Ones, capable of abandoning the origin and capable of attaining cessation, is the nature of the Truth of the Path. \t\t\tOf these, the first two encompass all the causes and effects of cyclic existence (samsara) that are wholly defiled, and the latter two encompass all the causes and effects of nirvana that are completely purified. \t\t\t2. Second, the characteristics are: \t\t\tThe meaning of characteristics that are not contrary to what is taught. \t\t\tAs stated in the *Abhidharmasamuccaya* (Compendium of Abhidharma): "Having the meaning of characteristics that are not contrary to what is taught." The conditioned aggregates, the results produced by the Truth of Origin, correspond to what is taught, and are the characteristics of the Truth of Suffering. The cause that produces the aggregates of appropriation for suffering, corresponds to what is taught, and is the characteristics of the Truth of Origin. The suchness (tathata) purified from adventitious defilements, corresponds to what is taught, and is the characteristics of the Truth of Cessation. The entry path leading to liberation, corresponds to what is taught, and is the characteristics of the Truth of the Path. \t\t\t3. Third, the certainty of number and order is: \t\t\tCause and effect are paired, number and order are certain. \t\t\tTo be known, to be abandoned, to be attained, to be cultivated. \t\t\tAmong the Four Noble Truths, cyclic existence (samsara) and nirvana are definite as two, and each of these has a pair of cause and effect, thus there are two definite pairs: In cyclic existence, there are the Truth of Suffering (the effect) and the Truth of Origin (the cause) as two; in nirvana, there are the Truth of Cessation (the effect) and the Truth of the Path (the cause) as two, thus the number of the Four Truths is definite. However, not all knowable phenomena are encompassed within the Four Truths, because space, non-analytic cessation, impure suchness, and the utterly purified mundane realm, etc., these four categories are not included in any of them. \t\t\tAs for the order, it is taught according to the order of subjective direct realization of the four objective truths: \t\t\tIn the *Abhidharmakosha*: \t\t\tHow the truths are directly realized

Stages. Thus. Furthermore, the aggregate of suffering that is cyclic existence (samsara) should be known like a disease; its cause, the origin of karma and afflictions, should be abandoned like the cause of disease; the cessation, liberation from all suffering, should be attained like the happiness of being free from disease; and as a means to that, the cultivation of the undefiled path should be relied upon like excellent medicine, in order to realize it. From the *Uttaratantra* (or *The Sublime Continuum*), it is said: The disease is to be known, the cause of disease is to be abandoned, The state of happiness is to be attained, medicine is to be relied upon. Similarly, suffering, its cause, its cessation, and likewise the path, Are to be known, to be abandoned, to be understood, and to be relied upon. Thus it is taught. Fourth, the Definitive Meaning: Each one's nature is unerringly spoken as truth. Commonly, since each one's nature genuinely and unerringly abides in four aspects, when one perceives their nature as it is, an unerroneous wisdom arises, hence they are called “Noble Truths.” Specifically, the definitive meaning of each, as stated in the *Abhidharmakosha Commentary*: “Because it is of the nature of harm, it is suffering.” “By way of its arising, it is the origin.” “Because the aggregates cease, it is cessation.” “For the purpose of traversing, it is the path.” Thus. Second, concerning the explanation of each truth, there are four: 1. The Truth of Suffering, to be known; 2. The Truth of Origin, to be abandoned; 3. The Truth of Cessation, to be attained; 4. The Truth of the Path, to be relied upon. Regarding the first, there are two parts: 1. Establishing its nature, and 2. Classification and collection based on its essence. First (Establishing its nature): The three realms and nine grounds are the places where sentient beings are born. Sentient beings born therein are of the nature of the Truth of Suffering. From the *Abhidharma-samuccaya*, it is said: “What is the Truth of Suffering? It is to be known by the birth of sentient beings and their places of birth.” This means: The Form Realm (Rūpaloka) is divided by the four dhyānas into four grounds; the Formless Realm (Arūpaloka) is divided by the four immeasurables (or four concentrations) into four grounds; the Desire Realm (Kāmaloka) is one equivalent ground. These nine grounds, distinguished by mind within the three realms, are the places where sentient beings are born in the container world. All beings born in that moving, essential world are to be known as being of the nature of the Truth of Suffering.
