This is the meaning thoroughly examined by each individual's own aspirations. And the literal meaning is: that which is established by the scriptural and logical reasoning of one's own system, beyond which there is never any other way to proceed. As it is said. \t\t\tC2. Second [detailed classification] has two: Ch1. The presentation of the Lesser Vehicle; Ch2. The presentation of the Greater Vehicle. \t\t\tCh1. The first has two: J1. Brief presentation; J2. Extensive explanation. \t\t\tJ1. The first is: \t\t\tIn the Lesser Vehicle, there are two: Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas. \t\t\tThus it is said. (Page 224, verso) \t\t\tJ2. The second has two: Ny1. The Vehicle of the Śrāvakas; Ny2. The Vehicle of the Pratyekabuddhas. \t\t\tNy1. The first has six: T1. Etymology and literal meaning; T2. Gateway to engagement; T3. Vows to be observed; T4. Views to be realized; T5. Fruits to be attained; T6. Detailed divisions. \t\t\tT1. The first is: \t\t\tRelying on others, hearing and proclaiming, are Śrāvakas. \t\t\tThis means: In Sanskrit, the term “ཤྲ་བ་ཀ་ (Śrāvaka, श्रवक, Hearer)” applies to both “listening” and “hearing,” hence it is called “Śrāvaka.” Just as “བུདྡྷ་ (Buddha, बुद्ध, Awakened One)” applies to both “awakened” and “expanded,” hence it is called “Buddha.” \t\t\tAlternatively, by “relying on others, hearing and proclaiming,” it means that relying on other teachers and proclaiming what has been heard from them to other places, thus it is called “hearing and proclaiming” or “Śrāvaka.” \t\t\tT2. Second, the explanation of the “gateway to engagement” has two: Th1. A brief presentation through enumeration; Th2. An extensive explanation through characteristics. \t\t\tTh1. The first is: \t\t\tGateway to engagement: \t\t\tThe Four Noble Truths of Suffering, Origin, Cessation, and Path, \t\t\tpossessing the sixteen aspects of Dharma-patience, Dharma-knowledge, Subsequent-patience, and Subsequent-knowledge. \t\t\tTherefore, the gateway through which Śrāvakas enter is: For each of the Four Noble Truths—the Truth of Suffering, the Truth of Origin, the Truth of Cessation, and the Truth of the Path—they enter through sixteen momentary aspects of knowledge, applying Dharma-patience, Dharma-knowledge, Subsequent-patience, and Subsequent-knowledge to each. \t\t\tTh2. The second [extensive explanation through characteristics] has three: D1. Common explanation; D2. Separate explanation of the four truths; D3. Presentation of general characteristics in summary. \t\t\tD1. The first has four: N1. Nature; N2. Characteristics; N3. Number and order; N4. Etymology. \t\t\tN1. The first is: \t\t\tThe continuum of aggregates produced by previous karma and defilements, \t\t\tkarma and defilements becoming the future appropriating cause.
