By all diligent ones here, This very teaching should be expounded. Thus it is said: From *Suhrllekha* (Letter to a Friend): This dependent origination is the profound and precious essence Of the treasury of the Victors' (Buddhas') speech. Whoever correctly perceives this, That one, by seeing the Dharma, sees the Tathagata (Buddha). Thus it was taught. Eight. The presentation of the reality of dependent origination has three parts: 1. The reality of selflessness; 2. The inner reality; 3. The reality of lack of inherent existence. 1. The first is: All phenomena are selfless, merely dependently originated. All conventional aspects of phenomena of cyclic existence, the path, and results, since they arise from the aggregation of causes and conditions, are impermanent, suffering, emptiness, and selfless. First, impermanence: Phenomena undergo momentary arising and ceasing, which is subtle impermanence. Moreover, it is not that they cease *after* having arisen, but rather that the very nature of their arising is simultaneously ceasing. Therefore, there is not even the slightest opportunity for them to abide in between, and thus arising and ceasing are continuous. Suffering: Due to being impermanent, it is established as suffering. This is because there is no freedom to abide even for a single moment. Emptiness: In any external or internal phenomenon, only various impermanent effects arise from their respective various impermanent causes and conditions. There is never a self or an agent, and therefore it is empty. (221b) Selflessness: These phenomena are not made by a truly existent agent, but appear merely as dependently originated, imputed in reliance upon causes and conditions. 2. The second [inner reality] is: Non-existent in reality, the inner reality of consciousness. Although it is thus selfless, if one considers the dependent originations of inner consciousness and outer objects to be truly existent, then all dependently originated phenomena are artificial and momentary, thus there is not even the slightest truly existent entity. This is a mistaken, inappropriate mental engagement of conceptualization, or merely a manifestation of consciousness.

What arises from its power is called the inner suchness. \t\t\tChapter 3: [The Suchness of Non-inherent Existence]. \t\t\tThat too is not originally established, merely an appearance, \t\t\tLike a consciousness stained by two non-contradictory factors, \t\t\tThis is the suchness of non-inherent existence. \t\t\tClear light wisdom transcends the sphere of dependent origination, \t\t\tBecause it is liberated from the dichotomy of agent and action. \t\t\tForms and consciousness, though never truly existent from the very beginning and thus not genuinely established, their mere appearance is not contradictory. For example, in the dream consciousness afflicted by sleep, various appearances such as mountains, fences, and houses arise. Those appearances have never genuinely existed, yet, just as there is merely the consciousness of sleep at that time, even though various forms of objects and meanings appear, these too have never been truly established from the very beginning. However, the basis for these appearances is merely a conceptualization, which exists at that time. Although the dream fire has never existed from the very beginning, just as it appears to burn firewood, it transcends all extremes of existence and non-existence, permanence and annihilation. Since the various forms of dependent origination arise merely as appearances, they transcend the extreme of non-existence. Since it is not inherently established, it also transcends the extreme of existence. (222na) \t\t\tLikewise, the appearances of dependent origination, the former ones cease, and the latter ones arise, possessing an impermanent nature, thus transcending the extreme of permanence. Since the mere appearances arising from causes and conditions ceaselessly occur, transcending the extreme of annihilation, this is the suchness of non-inherent existence. \t\t\tTherefore, from the *Abhidharmasamuccaya* (Kun btus), it is said: "Not from self, not from other, not from both, not from no cause." "Not established in self-nature, not established in other-nature, not established in both-natures." Thus it is stated. Likewise, that which gives rise to formations (saṃskāra) due to the condition of ignorance, is also not merely arisen from the sole essence of ignorance, because a single cause alone cannot produce multiple effects; nor does it arise from other entities, because it depends on its own causes; nor from both, because self and other are individually precluded; nor from no cause, because the arising of effects is certainly dependent on causes, which is directly perceived.
