Furthermore, the body ripened by certain karmas may arise beyond a hundred kalpas and so forth. Completing them within a single lifetime is also as stated above. Therefore, to place the three of craving, grasping, and becoming after the first three of its sequence, and other such ways of disrupting the order, are extremely unreasonable, as stated by the great Jonang Jetsun. Incidentally, one might wonder which dependent originations exist in which realm, and whether these are of the same ground or not. In the desire realm, all twelve links are completely present. (220b) In the upper two realms, only some of the twelve links exist, because if there is old age there, then formations (samskaras) are explained as becoming old and decaying, thus it is explained. In the formless realm, the dependent originations related to form are absent, because the nine grounds of the three realms are also categorized into three: their own ground, lower grounds, and upper grounds; or, they are categorized into three: the ground of death, the ground of birth, and neither of the two. Among these, a single link other than ignorance is only congruent with the ground where one is to be born. Ignorance, if born from the desire realm into the desire realm, belongs to the desire realm, so all are of the same ground. In the upper eight grounds, when born from one's own ground to one's own ground, ignorance does not have its own ground [as ignorance], because the karma that propels rebirth into those [grounds] is the meditation on calm and coarseness, and because there is no self-ground and no meditation on calm and coarseness for oneself. However, if examined in detail, many distinctions are explained concerning this, which should be understood from the treatises of the supreme scholar Vasubandhu and others. (D) 7. The summary of the meaning of dependent origination has three parts: (1) The manner in which the understanding of arising and ceasing originates from dependent origination; (2) Its summary into the two truths; (3) The manner in which it is difficult to understand due to the five profound contradictions, and incidentally, the explanation that understanding it brings benefits and virtues. (1) Firstly: Not made, impermanent, endowed with seed power, All phenomena arise and cease from realizing dependent origination. The arising and ceasing of phenomena are not created by the agitation of the conceptual fabrications of a creator's mind, and for that which is permanent and stable, the arising and ceasing by causes and conditions are not admissible. Therefore, impermanent phenomena are by nature arising and ceasing. All phenomena are endowed with the power of seeds, hence they arise from their respective causes capable of producing their own effects. Thus...

Due to not understanding that phenomena arise and cease in the manner of possessing three characteristics (generation, abiding, cessation), externalists and others assert various views of permanence and annihilation. Therefore, if one comprehends the meaning of dependent origination, one will know its very nature. And by knowing these three (characteristics), one will gain certainty in dependent origination. (220b) Chapter 2 [Collecting them into the Two Truths]: The conventional, merely appearing, its very nature, Is the ultimate dependent origination, extremely subtle. Thus, what merely appears as emptiness and dependent origination is conventional dependent origination. Its nature, although appearing, is not truly established; the ultimate dependent origination of emptiness is is established merely by designation. This crucial point is exceedingly profound and subtle, and thus it is the sole domain of the Buddhas' omniscient wisdom. The pinnacle of all spoken Dharma (Dharma-wheel) is this principle of dependent origination, for which reason it was praised as the supreme among all speakers. Therefore, it should be known that all presentations of dependent origination are subsumed within the nature of the two truths. Chapter 3 [The profoundness and difficulty of comprehension due to five seeming contradictions, with an appended explanation of the benefits of understanding]: Profound by cause and characteristic, by generation, abiding, and arising. Difficult to comprehend due to five seeming contradictions. The reason why this meaning is not comprehended by anyone other than the omniscient Teacher (Buddha) is: profound by cause, profound by characteristic, profound by generation, profound by abiding, profound by arising – these five. (And simultaneously) momentary, yet also perceived as abiding; (simultaneously) arising from unmoving conditions, yet also perceived as having distinct individual capacities; (simultaneously) there is no sentient being, yet also perceived as a sentient being; (simultaneously) there is no agent, yet also perceived as action not going to waste; (simultaneously) not arising from the four extremes, yet also perceived as activity arising independently of other causes. These five seeming contradictions make it extremely difficult to comprehend. Knowing the meaning of such profound dependent origination has vast purpose, because through relying on the pure view of the inseparability of emptiness and dependent origination, one will attain the state of complete Buddhahood. (221a) It is also said in the *Four Hundred Verses*: If one sees dependent origination, Ignorance will not arise. Therefore
