Because of it. Some people, presuming to differentiate, assert that Nāgārjuna’s presentation of dependent origination belongs to the Madhyamaka (Middle Way) system, while the two brothers Asaṅga and Vasubandhu, because they accept production from others, belong to the Cittamātra (Mind-Only) system. This can be understood as untenable by the quotation from the *Abhidharmasamuccaya* that was just explained. Generally, production from others is merely an appearance of production from others conventionally. The refutation of "not produced from others" is the refutation of inherently existent production from others. Nowadays, those who wish to uphold Nāgārjuna's teachings unanimously accept that emptiness and dependent origination are mutually pervasive. However, ultimate naturally clear wisdom must be understood as transcending dependent origination, because it transcends the sphere of conceptual thought and language. In it (page 222b), the relative notions of cause and effect, producer and produced, and that which posits and that which is posited are liberated. Furthermore, that naturally clear light is primordially established wisdom, whose own nature is not produced by any cause, and it does not perform the function of a cause to produce other effects. That wisdom is also not an object of conceptual thought and language. Just as someone who has never seen the Potala Palace (a famous palace in Lhasa, Tibet) can never truly represent its characteristics as they are, no matter how much they describe and analyze them; likewise, even if natural clear light is analyzed and posited by conceptual thought and language, its true nature cannot be represented, either directly or indirectly, by any means. In that case, these relative dependent originations are general characteristics, and because they are the direct objects of expression by language, if they are not even present in these inherently existent phenomena (specific characteristics), then what need is there to mention that they transcend the sphere of that natural clear light? Although ultimate reality is not dependent origination, realizing ultimate reality through meditating on dependent origination is not contradictory, because it is accepted that all phenomena arise dependently. This presentation of dependent origination is also explained as an extended meaning from the three characteristics, and because it is gathered into the extensive scope, it is mainly explained according to the doctrine of the two brothers, Asaṅga and Vasubandhu. This is the chapter on the presentation of general topics of knowledge regarding the Greater and Lesser Vehicles. Greater and Lesser Vehicles...

Explanation of the Second Chapter on the General Establishment of Knowable Phenomena. Chapter Three: The Establishment of the Causal Vehicle. C3. The third chapter on the establishment of the causal vehicle has two parts: D1. General presentation; D2. Specific differentiation. D1. Firstly: The three Buddhist vehicles are established by the Victorious Ones. Each of the four philosophical schools pertains to individual persons, Their own intellect's ultimate view is the established tenet. (223a) Among our own Buddhist schools, there are the widely known three vehicles and four philosophical schools. Of these, the three vehicles are established by the Victorious Ones themselves in the scriptures, and they are the teachings of all Buddhas, past and future, in this fortunate eon. Generally, the term "vehicle" (Yana), like the well-known elephants and so forth that carry burdens, is so called because they carry burdens and travel. Similarly, (in Buddhism,) "vehicle" is established because it carries the burden of one's own and others' welfare, leading to the supreme state. Here, that which travels is the causal vehicle, and that which travels here (to the result) is the resultant vehicle. That which carries the great burden of both one's own and others' welfare is established as the Mahayana (Great Vehicle), and that which carries only the small burden of solely one's own welfare is established as the Hinayana (Lesser Vehicle). Regarding the four philosophical schools, in the context of the Tantric tradition, during the progressive presentation of views in the glorious *Hevajra Tantra* (or similar Tantric text, referring to "Two Investigations"), it is stated: Therein, the Vaibhāṣika is taught. The Sautrāntika is likewise. The Yogācāra comes after that. Following that, the Madhyamaka will be taught. Thus it is stated. And although in the *Kālacakra Tantra*'s chapter on wisdom, it is said that the four philosophical schools arose from the four faces of the Blessed One, it is merely mentioned by name due to the need for symbolism. However, unlike the three vehicles, a full establishment of ground, path, and fruition is not taught. And although it is said that the four Vedas also arose from the four faces of the Kālacakra, these were not established by the Buddha. Because the four philosophical schools were created by individuals who appeared later than the founding teachers of the chariots (traditions), these four philosophical schools are the ultimate established tenets, which are views analyzed by each individual with their own intellect. Therefore, the Omniscient Rongtön Chenpo said: The meaning of philosophical schools is, engaging in thorough analysis of what should be adopted and what should be abandoned (223b)...
