Now nine are defilements. The second and tenth are karma. The remaining seven are suffering. In accordance with what was stated, ignorance, craving, and grasping, these three are the afflictive obscurations of defilements. Formations and becoming, these two are the karmic obscurations of karma. The remaining seven sufferings are the resultant obscurations of birth. Moreover, from the Essence of Dependent Origination of the Middle Way: From the three, two arise; From the two, seven arise; and from the seven, Three arise. This wheel of existence, Itself revolves again and again. As stated above, from the three defilements, two karmas are created, from which a basis arises, and from these (bases), defilements also arise, thus like a chicken from an egg and an egg from a chicken, they arise in a mutually revolving manner. The second (classification) is: ignorance, formations, craving, grasping, and becoming—these, which are included in karma and defilements, are the five causal afflictive obscurations. The remaining seven are the seven resultant afflictive obscurations. Thus, they are summarized into two groups: causal and resultant afflictive obscurations. (Page 3) The third (classification) [exposition of seven causes] is: The seven causes for projection and completion are explained as concluding in two lifetimes. Furthermore, by explaining the seven causes of projection and completion, there is also a system (explanation) of how they are completed over two lifetimes. Ignorance is the cause that obstructs the seeing of the true nature of reality and leads to perverse actions. Formations are the cause that deposits karmic imprints onto the foundation consciousness (alaya-vijñana) (219 verso). Consciousness is the cause that leads to the place of birth (rebirth). Name-and-form and the six sense bases are the cause that fully apprehends a body similar to its kind. Contact and feeling are the cause for closely experiencing objects. Craving, grasping, and becoming, these three, are the cause that completely gathers future rebirth. Birth and aging-and-death are the cause for being born from suffering and certainly arising. Therefore, these are the seven causes. Among these, ignorance, formations, and consciousness—these three are the projecting links, and name-and-form, the six sense bases, contact, and feeling—these four are the projected links. This dependent origination of projection is completed in the previous lifetime. Craving, grasping, becoming, birth, and aging-and-death—these five are the completing links.

Therefore, it is perfectly expounded in future lives. \t\t\tSecond, the meaning of the treatise by Acarya Vasubandhu is: \t\t\tBy Vasubandhu's feet, the four complete with projection and accomplishment, \t\t\tBy what it projects and how it projects, \t\t\tWhat is projected, by what it is accomplished and how it is accomplished, \t\t\tWhat is accomplished, and the seven faults, are distinguished and explained. \t\t\tThe supreme scholar Vasubandhu, in his commentary on the Dependent Origination Sutra, finely distinguished the complete presentation of dependent origination with its four aspects of projection and accomplishment over two lifetimes, revealing seven key points: Regarding the dependent origination that projects, it is divided into three parts: by what it projects, how it projects, and what is projected. Regarding the dependent origination that accomplishes what has been projected, it is also divided into three parts: by what it is accomplished, how it is accomplished, and what is accomplished. Furthermore, it explains what the faults are. These seven points are also expounded in conjunction with the sequence of the twelve links of dependent origination. \t\t\tAmong these, what projects is ignorance (219b) and the two links of formations aroused by it. How it projects is by the formation link sowing the seeds of karma into the single consciousness link. What is projected are name-and-form, the six sense bases, contact, and feeling—these four. \t\t\tIn this way, although these seven links cause the seeds of a future rebirth to ripen and be fully projected, the seed itself is only made into something with strong potential. Yet, it is not certain that this future rebirth will quickly come to fruition. What makes the future rebirth certain to be accomplished at a swift time, like a subsequent birth, is the accomplishment link. Among these, what accomplishes is the two links of becoming and grasping. \t\t\tHow it is accomplished is by the previously projected future rebirth, in a manner that makes that seed into the powerful potential of the links. What is accomplished is solely the birth link in the future rebirth. \t\t\tThe seventh point, what the faults are, is demonstrated by the single link of old age and death. \t\t\tThese are also merely examples of the most important aspects; other things are not necessarily fixed. Because many lifetimes result in only one birth...
