Going to states of woe is the dependent origination distinguished by what is desired and undesired, and these six are all dependent originations pertaining to the side of defilement. Among them, the two, the dependent origination of the container (world) and the external dependent origination, are based on the external container world; the other four are dependent originations based on sentient beings, the internal contents. Secondly, the second [explanation of the two pure dependent originations] is: Based on the five paths, Distinguished excellently by pure liberation; Having attained the six supernormal cognitions, distinguished excellently by mighty power. This is the side of purification, the generated and the generator. Based on the three trainings, the five paths arise gradually. Based on the previous four paths, the attainment of the state of liberation, the path of no-more-learning, becoming manifest is the dependent origination distinguished excellently by purity. Attaining the six supernormal cognitions is the dependent origination distinguished excellently by mighty power. These six supernormal cognitions are also taught in the Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra (Sutra Ornament) thus: Knowing birth, speech, mind, generated good and non-good, Their place, and definite emergence, what is directly perceived, All-pervading knowledge, including excellent distinction, Initially attaining steadfastness, that is the power. As it is taught. This also means: the supernormal cognition of knowing the birth of other beings, perceiving their death and rebirth. The supernormal cognition of divine ear, knowing the words spoken by those beings. The supernormal cognition of knowing others' minds, knowing the variety of their minds. The supernormal cognition of previous abodes, knowing the good and non-good deeds performed previously (216b). The supernormal cognition of miraculous feats, knowing how to go to the place where beings to be tamed are. The supernormal cognition of the exhaustion of defilements, knowing how sentient beings emerge from birth. Thus, in all realms of the world, the unobstructed direct perception of these six matters, including their distinctions, is explained as being encompassed by the supernormal cognitive power of the Bodhisattvas. Among these, the six supernormal cognitions of noble Bodhisattvas are the defining characteristic of excellent distinction by mighty power, and the five supernormal cognitions of those on the paths of accumulation and preparation are concordant excellent distinctions by mighty power; while the externalists, relying on the worldly path, are

Attaining supernormal knowledge, miraculous powers, etc. from this basis is in no way in conformity with the actual classification of power. These two dependent originations are the aspect of purification, and these eight classifications are generally called "related dependent origination," which is dependent origination in terms of what is produced and what produces. Third, the detailed explanation of the twelve links has three parts: 1. Continuous or temporary dependent origination; 2. Momentary dependent origination; 3. Related dependent origination. The first (continuous or temporary dependent origination) has three parts: 1. The manner in which the twelve links are completed in one cycle over two lives in the desire realm; 2. The manner in which they are completed in three lives; 3. The manner in which they are completed in one life. The first (manner of completion in two lives in the desire realm) is: The specific twelve temporary links, Completed in two lives in the desire realm, are: Five projected links projected by two projecting causes, Two completing links and three completed links. For the four projecting and completing (aspects), there is one sequence of cause and effect, Taught for the sake of knowing how to sow seeds and nurture them. After the general meaning of dependent origination (217b) has been explained, in explaining the sequence of how the specific twelve links arise: regarding temporary dependent origination, the manner of completion in two lives in the desire realm, and the two manners of completion in three lives, these were extensively taught by the Blessed One in the sutras, and each has its own purpose. Therefore, one must first understand that these two should not be mixed or confused. The manner of completion in two lives is: the two projecting links are ignorance and volitional formations; the five projected links are consciousness, name-and-form, six sense bases, contact, and feeling; the two completing links are craving and grasping; the three completed links are becoming, birth, old age and death. Thus, one cycle of the cause and effect sequence is completed in these four aspects of projecting and completing. Here, the two links of projecting and completing are for understanding the sowing of seeds, and the projected and completed links are for the sake of knowing how to nurture those seeds; therefore, such an explanation was given. The second [manner of completion in three lives] is: Two at the beginning and two at the end, eight in the middle, Two cycles of cause and effect, in three lives in the desire realm, and so on, Ignorance
