When it arises, there is a desire for it to arise again and again, and the capacity to engage in various activities as a means to accomplish that very desire is called 'Grasping' (upādāna). Concerning this 'Grasping,' it is taught to be fourfold: Grasping for sensual pleasures (kāma-upādāna), Grasping for existence (bhava-upādāna), Grasping for views (dṛṣṭi-upādāna), and Grasping for a self-theory (ātma-vāda-upādāna). Through these, the subsequent links are accomplished. The tenth link, 'Becoming' (bhava), is the powerful karma that brings about manifest rebirth. The eleventh link, 'Birth' (jāti), refers to the actualization of the birth link, which is the process of reconnecting consciousness in the womb. Once consciousness has been reconnected, that is the twelfth link, 'Old Age and Death' (jarāmaraṇa). This begins from the stage of acquiring birth, such as the embryo (nūrnūrpo), and gradually, the continuous change moment by moment is 'old age.' Here, 'old age and death' are combined into one link because without old age, there is no death, and thus it is taught in that way. Therefore, it should be understood by all beings that these twelve links arise in two ways: through the manifestation of imprints deposited in the fundamental consciousness (ālayavijñāna), and through the complete ripening of seeds. E. The Fifth: Functions Functions (214b) obscure the meaning and plant seeds. Leading, pervading, perfecting, and completely severing. Engaging, gathering, connecting, causing suffering to arise. Their respective functions are explained in one and a half verses from the 'Madhyāntavibhāga' (Distinguishing the Middle from Extremes): The function of 'Ignorance' (avidyā) is to obscure the seeing of the true meaning. Similarly, The function of 'Formations' (saṃskāra) is to deposit the seeds of karma in the fundamental consciousness by its power. The function of 'Consciousness' (vijñāna) is to lead to the place of rebirth in accordance with the seeds. The function of 'Name and Form' (nāmarūpa) is to pervade the body as if led. The function of 'Six Sense Bases' (ṣaḍāyatana) is to perfect the body as if grasped. The function of 'Contact' (sparśa) is, by its power, after the three (sense organ, object, consciousness) are gathered, to completely sever the object. The function of 'Feeling' (vedanā) is, as if severed, to engage with pleasure and so forth. The function of 'Craving' (tṛṣṇā) is, by its power, to gather rebirth in accordance with karma. The function of 'Grasping' (upādāna) is, like craving, to connect consciousness to rebirth. As if connected, to make rebirth manifest.

The tendency towards existence (srid pa), and by its power, the formation of the aggregates of suffering, which is birth (skye ba), and its fault, the function of old age and death (rga shi), which changes the body, mind and life, all of these are the operations of all afflictions (nyon mongs pa) within cyclic existence (samsara). Sixth, explaining the detailed classifications, there are two parts: ཐ༡ Summary, ཐ༢ Detailed Explanation. The first (summary) is: Three, eight, and twelve branches of classification are explained in detail. Although there are generally many types of detailed classifications for interdependent origination (rten 'brel), here it is divided into three categories, eight categories, and a detailed explanation of the twelve branches. The second (detailed explanation) has three parts: ད༡ The three, ད༢ The eight, ད༣ The detailed branches. The first (the three categories) also has three parts: ན༡ Interdependent origination of essential differentiation, ན༢ Interdependent origination of agreeable and disagreeable differentiation, ན༣ Interdependent origination with practical application (214b). The first (interdependent origination of essential differentiation) is: From the three, the essential differentiation of all phenomena, Emanates from the alaya-consciousness, taught only for the keenest faculties. The first of the three categories, the interdependent origination of essential differentiation, means that all outer and inner phenomena emanate from the alaya-consciousness (kun gzhi'i rnam par shes pa), and by its power, they appear as such. This is taught as the share of Bodhisattvas (byang chub sems dpa') with keenest faculties who have entered the Mahayana (theg pa chen po) path, and is not taught to the other two types of practitioners (Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas). Therefore, it is understood solely by Bodhisattvas or Buddhas, and Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not even comprehend a fraction of it. The second (interdependent origination of agreeable and disagreeable differentiation) is: Agreeable and disagreeable differentiation is taught to Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, Controlling both defilement and purification. The term 'differentiation' here signifies expansion and elaboration. “Agreeable” means pleasing, and “disagreeable” means unpleasing. The differentiation of these two refers to the twelve branches of interdependent origination (rten 'brel yan lag bcu gnyis). This was taught by the Bhagavan (Bcom ldan 'das) to both Shravaka (Nyan thos) and Pratyekabuddha (Rang rgyal) practitioners. Although both practice it as taught, Pratyekabuddhas understand the interdependent origination in both forward and reverse order (lugs 'byung dang lugs ldog gi rten 'brel) extensively, whereas Shravakas do not master interdependent origination to the extent of Pratyekabuddhas.
