Compatible, various, and cause and effect are each distinct. \t\t\tAmong these, for example, all phenomena arise interdependently without a creator, and so on, should be understood. \t\t\tD.4. Identification of each of the twelve links: \t\t\tIgnorance is the opposite of wisdom, endowed with three characteristics. \t\t\tAlthough there are many classifications, there are only two: afflicted and non-afflicted. \t\t\tThe root is the delusion of self, existing in the retinue of the afflicted mind. \t\t\tThe nature of the first of the twelve links, "ignorance," is the opposite of "wisdom," or its uncongenial aspect. It is a consciousness that apprehends its own object, but the image of that object is extremely unclear, and its mental continuum is extremely unsettled, becoming the gateway for the generation of afflictions, thus possessing these three characteristics. \t\t\tAlthough there are many classifications, there are two types: afflicted ignorance and non-afflicted ignorance. The former is the cause of cyclic existence, the affliction obscuration that hinders liberation; the latter is the knowledge obscuration that hinders omniscience. \t\t\tAccording to this system, the actual root ignorance is "delusion of self," which exists in the retinue of the afflicted mind (manas). \t\t\tSome identify it with "view of the perishable collection," but this is merely stated from the aspect of its clear manifestation. \t\t\tFormations are meritorious, non-meritorious, and unmoving karma. \t\t\tConsciousness is alaya, accompanied by attachment, and has two types: cause and effect. \t\t\tName-and-form refers to the five stages in the womb, which are the physical form. \t\t\tThe six sense faculties are clear, and the sense bases are their nature. \t\t\tThe second link, "formations," consists of meritorious karma, non-meritorious karma, and unmoving karma. \t\t\tThe first is virtuous karma of the desire realm. \t\t\tThe second is non-virtuous karma of the desire realm. \t\t\tThe third is the karma that achieves the upper two realms (form realm and formless realm), which is samadhi (meditation). \t\t\tThe third link, "consciousness," is the part where the imprints of karma are fully deposited upon the alaya-consciousness, causing the consciousness itself to be fully transformed. It also has two types: consciousness at the time of cause, and consciousness at the time of effect. \t\t\tIn the fourth link, "name-and-form," "name" refers to the four name aggregates, namely, feeling, perception, and so forth, the latter four aggregates. \t\t\tThe reason for establishing these (213a) as the name aggregates is that the form aggregate is the object of the five sense consciousnesses.

Because it has become manifest in the sphere of experience, there is no need to understand it through its name; whereas the latter four aggregates (feeling, perception, volitional formations, consciousness) exist by means of other causes and must be understood through their names. Like the speck, the embryonic lump, the firm lump, the development of limbs, and the fully formed limbs, these five stages in the womb are constituents of form (rūpa). The fifth limb, the six sense spheres: after the five stages in the womb, the six sense faculties (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind) become clearly manifest, which is the very essence of the sense spheres. Upon contact's birth, object, faculty, and consciousness meet, Based on that, feeling, attachment, aversion, and indifference are experienced. Desire, craving, and appropriation are grasping. The sixth limb, contact, means that after being born from the womb, contact arises from the coming together of the object, the faculty, and consciousness. Specifically, genuine contact is that aspect which arises when consciousness meets an object, leading to a definite knowing of the object. The seventh limb, feeling, is the experience of three kinds of feelings—pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral—based on contact. For example, when the eye faculty, a pleasing visual object, and eye consciousness come together, eye consciousness first generates complete contact with the object, and subsequently, a pleasant feeling arises through that contact. The six consciousnesses, categorized by the three feelings, are called the eighteen mental applications (eighteen modes of mental activity). The eighth limb, craving, is the longing for and attachment to the three feelings: pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral. Specifically, for pleasure, it is the craving not to be separated from it; for suffering, it is the craving to be separated from it; and for neutrality, it is the craving not to be separated from it. (213b) Furthermore, craving has three types: craving for sensual pleasures, craving for existence, and craving for non-existence (or annihilation). The first is the desire realm; the second is the two upper realms (form realm and formless realm); the third is the craving for thorough appropriation (or grasping). By grasping of desire, existence, views, and self-assertion, Future existences are accomplished, due to powerful karma, Rebirth is connected, and existence is obtained, thenceforth, Momentary change continues, life ceases, and old age and death follow. The ninth limb, grasping, means that grasping arises based on existence. For example, craving and attachment to pleasing forms of objects such as food, drink, and enjoyments...
