It is not something that can be fully understood. There are also two aspects to this: influenced by defilements, and influenced by purification. Firstly, due to the power of defiled virtuous actions concomitant with ignorance, birth in higher realms is called “dependent origination that manifests the desirable”; and due to the power of non-virtuous actions concomitant with ignorance, birth in the three lower realms is called “dependent origination that manifests the undesirable.” Secondly, (215b) due to the power of virtuous and non-virtuous actions concomitant with ignorance, birth in the six realms is called “manifesting the undesirable”; and due to the power of undefiled virtuous actions, the attainment of liberation is called “dependent origination that manifests the desirable.” Here, “manifesting” (རྣམ་པར་འབྱེད་པ་) means growth and expansion. Therefore, the various appearances such as forms, sounds, smells, tastes, touches, etc., and the improper mental constructions arising from mind and mental factors, leave imprints on the alaya-consciousness, causing the alaya-consciousness itself to grow and expand. Third, [Utilizational Dependent Origination]: The utilizational (dependent origination) is the manner of the arising and cessation of the six consciousnesses. The Śrāvakas comprehend it through the gate of selflessness. “Utilizational Dependent Origination” refers to the way the six consciousnesses arise and cease. Here, the “user” (ཉེ་བར་སྤྱོད་པ་པོ་) is feeling (ཚོར་བ་), and what is “used” (ཉེ་བར་སྤྱད་བྱ་) is contact (རེག་པ་). Any object endowed with such is called “utilizational” (ཉེ་བར་སྤྱོད་པ་). For example, an agreeable visual object is the objective condition; the eye faculty is the dominant condition; the cause for the first moment of eye consciousness is the causal condition; and the mental attention desiring to direct towards the object is the immediately preceding condition. Through the power of these four complete conditions, eye consciousness arises. When that eye consciousness fully experiences the visual object, it is contact; and the experience by that consciousness of the agreeable aspect of the object is pleasant feeling, which is the gateway for the arising of attachment; and the mental intention not to be separated from that object is volition. Thus, when eye consciousness arises from these four conditions, the virtuous mental factors, feeling, and volition that accompany it, make the main mind itself defiled and impure.

Thus it is done. \t\t\tThereby, by relying on undesirable objects, the door to the arising of hatred (215b), and by relying on neutral objects, the door to the arising of ignorance, should also be understood by analogy. \t\t\tTherefore, the six consciousness aggregates, by relying on the three types of objects—desirable, undesirable, and neutral—give rise to the afflictions of attachment, hatred, and ignorance, thereby creating conceptual thoughts. For this reason, the Śrāvakas restrain these afflictions that arise from them, and they restrain them through the gates of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness; primarily, they restrain them through the practice of contemplating the selflessness of persons. \t\t\tD2. Second, the division into eight has two parts: N1. Six dependently arisen afflictions (kun nyon gyi rten 'brel). N2. The explanation of the two dependently arisen purifications (rnam byang gi rten 'brel). \t\t\tN1. The first is: \t\t\tEight are consciousness and birth-death arising, \t\t\tSeed, sprout, stem, and so forth in succession. \t\t\tFormation, abiding, and disintegration, differentiation of the world, \t\t\tSustenance by four foods, and desirable/undesirable destinations. \t\t\tThese six are aspects of affliction. \t\t\tThis means: among the eight divisions of dependent origination, the first, the dependent origination of the arising of consciousness, is precisely that recently explained dependent origination involving appropriation. \t\t\tThe dependent origination of the arising of birth and death-transference, from the differentiation of pleasant and unpleasant things, is the aspect of afflictive dependent origination stemming from ignorance as a condition for formations, and so on. Furthermore, from the aggregation of conditions such as fields, water, and fertilizer, from seeds arise sprouts, from sprouts arise stems, from stems arise sheaths, from sheaths arise ears of grain, and from ears of grain arise fruits. This is also an external dependent origination that continues ceaselessly. The dependent origination of the world system appearing as formation, abiding, and disintegration, which is greatly differentiated by the vessel (world), and also the various good and bad increases and decreases of sentient beings' lifespans and so forth, are included therein. \t\t\tThe four foods — edible food, contact food, mental volition food, and (216a) consciousness food — with the former successively giving rise to the latter, continually arise and sustain life in the state of cyclic existence. This is the dependent origination differentiated by the sustenance of food. By the power of virtuous karma, one goes to a desirable happy destination; by the power of non-virtuous karma, one goes to an undesirable [destination].
