This is conceptual fabrication (rnam rtog), and the aspect that it superimposes is the truly existent imputed phenomenon (kun brtags dngos). Generally, the fundamental conceptual fabrication is the all-ground consciousness (kun gzhi'i rnam shes). Grasping at objects is the conceptual fabrication of characteristics (mtshan ma'i rnam rtog). The six consciousnesses are the conceptual fabrication of appearing characteristics (mtshan snang gi rnam rtog). Feelings of happiness and suffering, etc., are the conceptual fabrication of changing characteristics (mtshan ma 'gyur ba'i rnam rtog). The conceptual fabrication of characteristics appearing that arise from the transformations of the six consciousnesses. Conceptual fabrications taught by others, where the mind is inclined after hearing what is Dharma and what is not Dharma. Conceptual fabrications of improper views, such as self-view (bdag lta). Conceptual fabrications of proper views, such as impermanence (mi rtag pa). Conceptual fabrications of clinging to wrong views (lta ngan). And these are explained as conceptual fabrications of distraction (rnam par g.yeng ba'i rnam rtog). Due to the limitless nature of the imputing conceptual thoughts (rtog pa), although the divisions of the fabricated (kun brtags) imputed by them become limitless, the latter divisions are specifically mentioned because they are taught as the trainings to be abandoned by Bodhisattvas. The eleven aspects of cognition (rnam rig) that arise from the Dependent Nature (gzhan dbang) (209b) are: The cognition of mere consciousness appearing as forms of habitual tendencies, which appears as the physical sense organs. The cognition of an embodied being, where eye consciousness appears as a sense organ. The cognition of the experiencer, which is the mind consciousness. The cognition of things to be utilized, appearing as the six objects. The cognition of experiencing, such as eye consciousness, etc. The cognition of appearing as time, such as years and months, etc. The cognition of appearing as numbers, such as one, ten, hundred, thousand, etc. The cognition of appearing as places, such as villages, cities, forests, and mountains, etc. The cognition of appearing as conventional terms, names, words, and letters. The cognition of appearing as self, by focusing on one's own body, speech, and mind. The cognition of appearing as other, by focusing on others' body, speech, and mind. Among these, the five sense organs are merely cognitions appearing as such. The middle four arise solely from the power of habitual tendencies of explicit expression. The last two arise from the habitual tendencies of self-view. The Perfected Nature (yongs grub) is also taught in nine aspects in the Prajnaparamita Sutras (yum rgyas pa): Suchness, Unerring Suchness, Non-other Suchness, Dharmata, Dharmadhatu, Dharma-abidingness, Flawless Dharma, Ultimate Reality, and the inconceivable expanse. These, respectively, are the perfectly accomplished freedom from fear, and...

Likewise, the perfectly established (nature) as untainted, immutable, without inherent nature, as the cause of purifying phenomena, at all times, irreversible, as suchness, and transcending the path of reasoning, are taught by Acarya Vasubandhu. Among these, the classifications of the perfectly established (yongs grub) (210na) are exemplified by the sixteen emptinesses. Although the other two (imagined and dependent) also have many (classifications), in summary, the appearing aspect of the dependent nature, which is the inconceivable delusive appearance, and the basis from which it arises, the alaya-vijnana containing all seeds, are also nothing other than the imagined nature. Therefore, the definition of the imagined nature and the definition of the dharmata perfectly established nature—these definitional classifications are gathered into two aspects. In general, the combination of the two, imagined nature and dependent nature, and the two aspects of perfectly established nature, cannot be said to be identical or different from it. Imagined nature is the imputed aspect fabricated (by superimposition), while dependent nature is the object upon which such superimposition is made. Perfectly established nature is the dharmata of those other two. Therefore, when analyzed from one perspective, the three are not identical; and when analyzed from another perspective, they are not different, thus neither identical nor different is established. The fifth [the three emptinesses and the manner of their application to the basis of designation] is: Non-existence, existence, and emptiness of self-nature. The way applied to the basis of designation, the appearing aspect is the imagined nature. Clear awareness is the dependent nature, free from elaboration is the perfectly established. There are two parts to this. First, the establishment of these three natures as the three emptinesses: Imagined nature is called the emptiness of non-existence, meaning that in the context of both truths, it is not established by its own characteristics. Dependent nature is called the emptiness of existence, meaning that although ultimately non-existent, it exists in the nature of conventional truth. Perfectly established nature is called the emptiness of self-nature, meaning that it abides in the manner of the dharmata of all phenomena, as stated in the Sutra-alamkara. Its manner is stated in the Prajnaparamita in 500 lines: “Subhuti, what is the samadhi of emptiness regarding form? Subhuti, it is the emptiness of the non-existence of phenomena (210na) regarding form, and likewise, the emptiness of the existence of phenomena, and focusing the mind one-pointedly on the emptiness of self-nature.”
