to perform it. In terms of classification: The thoroughly imagined nature (parikalpita) whose characteristics, such as the grasped object, are completely non-existent due to the mode of grasping the self of a person. The reason for this is that the self of a person (208a) is impossible in terms of the knowable, therefore, the grasped object that grasps it also has its characteristics completely non-existent. Nominal thoroughly imagined nature, such as the appearance of dualistic subject-object. Relative imputation, such as imputing 'large' in relation to 'small', and 'west' in relation to 'east'; these are three types. Alternatively: Two types of thoroughly imagined nature based on the basis of imputation and the imputing agent, or two types based on essence and distinction. Furthermore: In the Indian translation of the Lankavatara Sutra, it is stated in verse form as ten types, but in conformity with the twelve types that appear in the elaborate explanation, the Chinese translation states: The thoroughly imagined nature is of twelve types, The dependent nature is of six types. Thus it is stated. These are the conceptualization of expression, similarly, of speaking, of characteristics, of meaning, of own-nature, of causes, of views, of reasoning, of birth, of non-birth, of connection, and of bondage and non-bondage. Next, the second [Dependent Nature (Paratantra)] is: The dependent nature, born from causes and conditions, is mere cognition. Regarding both thoroughly defiled seeds and thoroughly purified [nature], Not established in either, it is divided into two or six types. The dependent nature is merely the cognition born from its own causes and conditions. The meaning of 'its own' is that it arises from causes and conditions that are consistent or appropriate with that consciousness. Furthermore, 'others' refers to the various imprints (vāsanā) placed upon the all-ground consciousness (ālaya-vijñāna), and due to the power of these imprints, the all-ground consciousness appears together with various cognitions. If consciousness were merely clear awareness and not under the sway of imprints, it would not become diversified cognitions but would remain self-standing; however, because imprints are dependent on others, cognitions become diversified. In terms of classification: The dependent nature of thoroughly defiled seeds, and the dependent nature which is not established in the nature of either thorough defilement or thorough purification because pure wisdom has not transformed the imprints; these are two types. Or: Due to the power of imprints, the mind and mental factors of the three realms truly exist...

The impure worldly dependent nature (paratantra) which appears, and the pure worldly dependent nature which appears as non-existent and illusory to the Noble Ones in the post-meditative state, are divided into these two. Again, as taught in the Lankavatara Sutra, there are six kinds: eye-consciousness and its object, form; and the mental factors arising as its retinue; and the defiled mind (klista-manas) which reveals them; and the alaya-vijnana (storehouse consciousness) as the first category. By extending this to other similar types, the alaya-vijnana and the defiled mind should be divided into six parts, corresponding to the six collections of consciousness. Third, the [Perfected Nature] (Parinishpanna) is: The ultimate reality (dharmata) perfected nature is thusness (tathata), Naturally pure, adventitiously stainless, Path-knowledge, and the scriptures' object of meditation accomplished – these four. The dharmata of all primordial ultimate phenomena is called the perfected nature. Although there is no division in its essence, by virtue of its connection with individual phenomena (dharmins), it becomes manifold in its divisions, as in the cases of the thusness of form, the thusness of sensation, and so forth, as taught. Arya Asanga, contemplating the four aspects – the naturally pure aspect, freedom from adventitious defilements, the wisdom of the path, and the object of meditation that is the Buddha's teachings on the path – without distinguishing between primary and secondary, taught four perfected natures: naturally perfected, stainless perfected, path perfected, and object-accomplished perfected. In the Madhyantavibhaga (Distinguishing the Middle from Extremes), two more were taught: the unchanging perfected nature and the non-erroneous perfected nature. Fourth, the [Specific Classification and Collection] is: Specific divisions: ten conceptual elaborations of distraction, Eleven kinds of discernment, nine perfected natures, and so forth are taught. Since the appearing aspect of dependent nature is an illusory imagined nature, The classificatory nature is gathered into two. Emanating from the three natures, the specific classifications taught in the Mahayanasutralankara and the Mahayanasamgraha. Firstly, the ten conceptual elaborations of distraction related to the imagined nature are: conceptualizing as non-existent, conceptualizing as existent, superimposition, denigration, apprehending as one, apprehending as many, apprehending as its own essence, conceptualizing difference, conceptualizing name as meaning, and conceptualizing meaning as name – all these are fabricating agents.
