Imputation. Like a vase, a pillar, etc., these are imputations upon actual things. Like analytical cessation, where an entity previously existed and later ceased to exist, this is a non-existent due to alteration by another. Like the universals of a vase and a pillar, these general meanings of entities are non-existents dependent on entities. Like rabbit horns, etc., or the universal of the non-existence of a vase, these are impossible non-existents. Part Two: The second [Path] is: Common, uncommon, The path to the Victor's abode is of three types. The common path is the vehicle of gods and Brahmā. The uncommon path is the vehicle of the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas. The path that leads to the abode of the Victor, the Teacher Buddha, or to that rank, is the Mahāyāna path. Thus, there are three types of paths. Part Three: The third [Dharmadhātu] is: The Dharmadhātu, ultimate reality, is solely uncompounded. The knowable existence is said to be twenty-five, Which is the establishment of the wheel of irreversible turning. Like the three uncompounded entities explained by the Śrāvakas, these are nominal or imputed uncompounded entities. Here, the Dharmadhātu, the definite ultimate truth, is the sole or unique uncompounded entity. In this way, all knowable phenomena are summarized into twenty-five types, which are the phenomena of the ground and the path, referred to as the establishment of the wheel of irreversible Dharma, such as the Great Nirvāṇa and the Great Drum, etc. Nu Two: The second [Five Dharmas which are the basis for characteristics] has two parts: Part One, an abridged explanation of the Five Dharmas, etc. Part Two, an extensive explanation of the two. Part One is: Furthermore, the five dharmas which are the basis for characteristics, And dependent origination, etc., which are derived from the three characteristics of engagement, Summarize the Mahāyāna. That is, in the Sūtras of the Third Turning of the Wheel, other bases for summarizing the knowable were also taught. These are the five dharmas which are the basis for the engagement of characteristics, such as cause and condition (རྒྱུ་མཚན་), and the three natures which are the characteristics of engaging in them, such as the imputed nature (ཀུན་བརྟགས་) (206na), and dependent origination derived from the former two, and so forth (ཁོངས་ནས), such as the two kinds of selflessness, these summarize the meaning of the knowable in Mahāyāna, which will be explained in sequence. Part Two: The second [extensive explanation of the two] has two parts: Part One, the five dharmas. Part Two, the explanation of the three natures. Part One has five: First, cause and condition. Second, name. Third,

4. 真如。5.

3. Conceptualization. 4. Suchness. 5. Perfect Primordial Wisdom. 1. The first (Reason/Sign – Basis for Conceptualization): The universal of a locus or object is the reason/sign, Natures appearing in the mind, innate due to imprints, Imputed self-images and so on, there are many categories of distinctions. The universal (general category) of a locus or object, expressed by the movement of sound and mind through conceptualization, is the reason/sign. For example, that universal appearing in the mind as the apprehended object by the conceptual grasping of “this is a pot.” Within that, as a sub-division: The various marks of imprinted appearances that spontaneously arise in the mind within cyclic existence are the reason/sign of inherent nature. For example, the grasping at a self imputed by erroneous philosophical tenets, this is the reason/sign of an image. Alternatively, reason/signs of realized and unrealized, clear and unclear, marked and unmarked, pairs of two, etc., there are many categories of distinctions. Furthermore, the five-fold division of dharmas also applies to the reason/sign itself: The reason/sign of reason/sign is: The grasping of that universal (general category) of the object by the mode of grasping “this is a pot.” The reason/sign of name is: Like the universal (general category) of the object apprehended by the mode of grasping. The reason/sign of conceptualization is: Like mind and mental factors. The reason/sign of suchness is: Whatever is the imputed object that conceptualization imputes as suchness. The reason/sign of perfect knowledge is: That universal (general category) of the mode of grasping that apprehends the path. 2. The second [Name]: The imputed superimposition, the general term, is a name. Real, related, composite, distinct, famous, not famous. (206b) The essence of a name is: The general term appearing as an imputed superimposition upon that reason/sign is called a name. For example, from that apprehended object by the conceptual mode of grasping “this is a pot,” the name “pot” is assigned. And that is not what is heard by the ear, but rather that which appears as the general sound. Although about forty divisions are taught from the summaries, here they are condensed into six: Name of a thing: For example, the general appearance of the sound “pot.” Name of relation: For example, the general appearance of the sound “this pot is large” or “this pot is small.” Name of composite: For example, “gold pot,” “silver pot,” and “copper pot”—these many are (called) “pot.”
