And my assemblies, etc. Thus it is stated. If categorized, there are fourteen: regarding meditative absorptions, there are two—the absorption of cessation and the absorption of non-perception. The characteristics of conditioned phenomena are birth, aging, abiding, and impermanence; these four. Name, word, and letter—these are the three groups (of concepts). Furthermore, if further divided, there are many. For example, regarding acquisition, there are three: found, attained, possessed. Regarding acquisition from previous states, there is also acquisition from non-acquisition, acquisition after loss, and acquisition of conditioned and unconditioned phenomena, etc., which are extensively explained. The fifth, the bases of unconditioned phenomena, are three: space, analytical cessation, and non-analytical cessation; these are explained as unconditioned phenomena. Th3. The third, the summary of the meaning of these: By the form aggregate, dharma element, and mind sense-base, All conventionalities are encompassed. These become three: Substantially existent, nominally existent, and non-existent (204b). These explanations, because they are posited by specifically drawing out elements from aggregates, and sense-bases from elements, for this very reason, the aggregates, elements, and sense-bases, if briefly summarized, are subsumed into three types of meaning: From the Treasury (Abhidharma-kośa): Form is the five faculties and objects, And unmanifest form. Only these faculties and objects, Are asserted as ten sense-bases and ten elements. As extensively explained, the ten form elements and sense-bases, and forms that are objects of the mind, are gathered into the form aggregate. The three aggregates of feeling, perception, and volitional formations, along with one aspect of form (subtle form) and the dharma sense-base, are gathered into the dharma element. The consciousness aggregate and the seven mental elements are gathered into the mind sense-base. From the Treasury (Abhidharma-kośa): Aggregates, sense-bases, and Elements—one encompasses all. As stated, all conventionally knowable phenomena are encompassed by these three. Furthermore, these can also transform into three: substantially existent phenomena, nominally existent phenomena, and non-existent phenomena. Among these, substantially existent phenomena are posited as the substance of matter for constituent atoms, etc.; and for the consciousness of objects appearing and cognizing, it is posited as the substance of consciousness. Nominally existent phenomena are, in general, those not examined, not investigated in nature (the original text ends here abruptly).

Although what is called a "vase" exists substantially, its arising and ceasing are imputed by the mind, and therefore it is nominally existent. Non-existent phenomena are like space and so forth. Furthermore, it is also explained that they are subsumed into substantial phenomena, nominally existent phenomena, conventionally existent phenomena, and ultimately existent phenomena. J2. Second, the explanation of the unique system of knowable objects of the Final Wheel of Dharma is threefold: N1. The basis of knowable objects: the twenty-five existents; N2. The five foundational dharmas upon which the characteristics (205a) apply; N3. The explanation of the three characteristics that apply to them. N1. The first is threefold: T1. Basis; T2. Path; T3. Dharmadhatu. T1. The first is: Aggregates, elements, sense-fields, each singular and gathered, Elements of generation, container and contained, mind, mental faculty, consciousness, Basis of characteristics, characteristics, non-existent, each divided into three. Basis of characteristics: feeling, perception, volitional formations, three. Characteristics: imputed to object, time, reality, three. Other-transformation, dependent on reality, impossible non-existent, together. Twenty-one foundational dharmas. This means: As previously stated, the five aggregates, eighteen elements, and twelve sense-fields are subsumed into the three: form aggregate, dharma element, and mental sense-field. Each of these is further divided into three: The form aggregate is divided into the elemental spheres, the outer world (container), and sentient beings (contained), three. The dharma sense-field is also divided into: mind, mental faculty, and consciousness, three. The dharma element is also divided into: basis of characteristics dharma, characteristics dharma, and non-existent dharma, each into three. The basis of characteristics is also divided into: aggregate of feeling, perception, and volitional formations, three. The characteristics are also divided into: imputed to object, imputed to time, and imputed to reality, three. Non-existent phenomena are also divided into: other-transformation non-existent, reality-dependent non-existent, and impossible non-existent, thus categorized. In this way, these twenty-one are established as foundational dharmas. The meaning of most of these has been stated above. "Characteristics" refer to all special dharmas that are universally imputed. These include: cause and effect, large and small, light and dark, example and exemplified, etc., all established in relation to something, are imputed to the object; the division into past and future (205b) is imputed to time.
