By cultivating the perception that tranquil abiding can be attained even in equanimity, one suppresses the six consciousness aggregates and the afflicted mind. Among these, the aspect of non-affirming negation, which comprises the unconditioned and acquisitions, having become mental phenomena, is called the Dharma Ayatana Dhatu (realm of the dharma sense-field). Third, the special Dharma Dhatu is: The eight conditioned and eight unconditioned phenomena, when combined, are exclusively the sphere of mental consciousness; hence, they are established as the special Dharma Dhatu. (page 202, verso) The five types of forms, etc., previously explained as derived from the aggregates, together with the three aggregates of feeling, perception, and volitions, constitute the eight conditioned phenomena. And the eight unconditioned entities. These two, when combined, are sixteen aspects whose nature is exclusively the sphere of mental consciousness; therefore, they are separately established as the special Dharma Dhatu. Third, the presentation of Ayatanas (sense fields) has two parts: 1. Identifying their nature; 2. Divisions by way of inclusion. First, identifying their nature: From the door of consciousness arising towards other objects, the twelve extensions such as eye and form, are supports and immediate internal conditions, and objective external conditions, serving as doors for arising and extending. Due to the meaning that consciousness arises through these doors and extends towards other objects, it is called "Ayatana" (sense field). These are the six internal Ayatanas such as the eye, and the six external Ayatanas such as form, totaling twelve. In the commentary on the Abhidharmakosha, it states: "The term 'Ayatana' (སྐྱེ་མཆེད་, आयतन, āyatana, place of arising) refers to the meaning of 'āyadvāra' (ཨཱ་ཡ་དྭ་, आयद्वार, āyadvāra, door of arising). It is called 'Ayatana' because mind and mental factors arise and extend based on it, thereby becoming a door for expansion." Applying this in detail for each: In terms of support, the eye sense field acts as the door for the arising of visual consciousness. In terms of object, the form sense field acts as the door for the arising of visual consciousness. Similarly, this applies to all remaining [sense fields] by considering them as doors for the arising of their respective consciousnesses in terms of both support and object. Specifically, in terms of immediate condition, the mind sense field acts as the door for the arising of mental consciousness; and in terms of objective condition, the dharma sense field acts as the door for the arising of mental consciousness.

Now, let it be known: In brief, from the aspect of the basis (support), the immediately preceding condition (internal), and the objective condition (202b), consciousness becomes the gateway through which it arises and propagates externally. Here, firstly, although all ten are forms, why is it that only the object of the eye is called form? And secondly, although all twelve are dharmas, why is it that only the object of the mind is called dharma? Because others are given individual names, implying a specific distinction; and because it can be demonstrated and has obstruction, it is the chief of forms, therefore only the object of the eye is called form. And as before, for the specific meaning; and because many dharmas such as feeling are included; and because the supreme dharma, nirvana, is also included, therefore only the object of the mind is called dharma. Second, the classification of the manner of inclusion has three parts: 1. Included by form; 2. Included by mind; 3. Included by dharmas. First, this is: The ten form sense-fields are similar to the elements. The ten form sense-fields are merely different in name from the elements mentioned above, but their meaning is equivalent, thus their manner of inclusion is similar. That is, in the context of elements, what was taught as the ten form elements, namely the five faculties and five objects, those very same are also called the ten form sense-fields in the context of sense-fields. Second, [included by mind] is: The seven consciousness elements are the mind sense-field. In the context of elements, what was taught by dividing into the seven consciousness elements, that, in the context of sense-fields, is united as the one called the mind sense-field. Third, [included by dharmas] is: The sixteen dharma elements are the dharma sense-field. In the context of elements, what was taught as the sixteen aspects of the dharma element, that, in the context of sense-fields, is taught as the one called the dharma sense-field. Second, explaining the summary of the meaning of these according to the Lower Abhidharma tradition has three parts: 1. A concise presentation related to the summary of meaning (203a); 2. Its extensive explanation; 3. The summary of their meaning. First, this is: Appearances (form) and principal mind with auxiliary mental factors. Non-associated formations and unconditioned phenomena. The Hearers summarize knowables into five bases.
