All these dharmas, categorized into aggregates, elements, and sense-fields, if mainly summarized by their types, are stated in the Abhidharma to be subsumed under five bases of knowable phenomena. Which five are they? Namely: the base of manifested forms, the principal base of mind, the accompanying base of mental factors, the temporary base of non-associated formations, and the negated base of unconditioned dharmas. The Hearers (Śrāvakas) assert that all knowable phenomena are subsumed under these five bases. Brilung Panchen (བྲི་ལུང་པཎ་ཆེན་) stated: "It is inappropriate to consider the five bases as exclusively belonging to the Vaibhāṣika (བྱེ་བྲག་སྨྲ་བ་) system, because they are clearly expounded in the *Abhidharmasamuccaya* (མངོན་པ་ཀུན་བཏུས་)." Chapter Two: [Its Detailed Explanation] is as follows: Five faculties, five objects, unmanifested form, these are form. Six consciousnesses are mind, and ten omnipresent virtuous mental factors. Six omnipresent defiled (mental factors), two omnipresent non-virtuous (mental factors). Ten minor defilements, eight indeterminate (mental factors). Compiling them, there are forty-six mental factors. Fourteen non-associated formations with their components. Space and two cessations are unconditioned dharmas. Although the meaning of these has been extensively discussed above, the presentations of Abhidharma, both higher and lower, are not identical. The system of the *Abhidharmakosha* (མཛོད་ཀྱི་ལུགས་) is exactly that of the Hearers (Śrāvakas). Therefore, desiring that its method, even partially indicated, be understood as a byproduct, it is briefly discussed here. Firstly, the base of manifested forms consists of five faculties, five objects, and unmanifested form, totaling eleven substantial entities. The five faculties are as before. Among the five objects, the object of the eye, the sense-field of form, consists of two types: colors and shapes. From these, there are twenty further divisions (page 203 verso): Blue, yellow, white, red, light, dark, cloud, Smoke, dust, mist, sunlight, Shadow, long, short, square, round, High, low, even, uneven. The first twelve are colors. Four are fundamental, eight are distinctions. The last eight are shapes. Thus it is said. Regarding sound, there are two types: apprehended sound and unapprehended sound. Each of these has two: that which expresses meaning and that which does not express meaning, making four. Each of these (four) has two: agreeable and disagreeable, making eight. Regarding smell, there are two types: agreeable and disagreeable. Each of these (two) is further divided into two: equal and unequal, making four. Regarding taste, there are: sweet, sour, p...

Pungent, bitter, hot, astringent; these are the six natures. \t\t\tRegarding tangibles: concerning causal tangibles, they are the four great elements. \t\t\tRegarding resultant tangibles: they are smooth, rough, heavy, light, hunger, thirst, cold; namely eleven. \t\t\tNon-revealing form (Avijñapti-rupa) is: any form belonging to the Dharma-ayatana, which arises from either volitional action (karma) or meditative absorption (samadhi), and is either virtuous or non-virtuous; this is the general definition of non-revealing (form). \t\t\tDivided into these, there are two types: those arisen from volitional action, and those arisen from meditative absorption. \t\t\tOf the former (arisen from volitional action), there are three: vows, non-vows, and the intermediate. \t\t\tOf the latter (arisen from meditative absorption), there are two: Dhyana vows and stainless vows. \t\t\tMoreover, vows are virtuous; non-vows are non-virtuous; the intermediate is either virtuous or non-virtuous. \t\t\tThe causes of these, the four great elements, are as mentioned above. \t\t\tSecond, the basis of the primary mind is precisely the six consciousnesses, from eye consciousness to mind consciousness. \t\t\tThird, the basis of the attendant mental factors is present in five categories. \t\t\tThe ten omnipresent mental factors are: \t\t\tFeeling, volition, perception, \t\t\tIntention, contact, wisdom, mindfulness, \t\t\tAttention, appreciation, and concentration. \t\t\tThe ten virtuous mental factors are: (204v) \t\t\tFaith, conscientiousness, pliancy, \t\t\tEquanimity, sense of shame, moral compunction, \t\t\tThe two roots of virtue: non-attachment and non-hatred, \t\t\tNon-harmfulness, and diligence. \t\t\tThe six afflicted omnipresent mental factors are: \t\t\tDelusion, heedlessness, laziness, \t\t\tNon-faith, drowsiness, and agitation. \t\t\tThe two great non-virtuous mental factors are: \t\t\tShamelessness and lack of moral compunction. \t\t\tThe ten minor afflictions are: \t\t\tAnger, resentment, deceit, envy, \t\t\tVexation, concealment, avarice, \t\t\tFlattery, arrogance, and harmfulness. \t\t\tThus, these thirty-eight (mental factors) are explicitly taught in the Abhidharmakośa. \t\t\tIn Vasubandhu's commentary, the eight indeterminate mental factors are supplemented: \t\t\tInvestigation, discernment, regret, sleep, anger, \t\t\tAttachment, pride, and doubt. \t\t\tAll of these, when totaled, amount to forty-six mental factors. \t\t\tFourth, the basis of non-associated formations is, when summarized, eight types. \t\t\tAcquisition, non-acquisition, homogeneity, \t\t\tNon-percipient state, meditative equipoise, \t\t\tLife-faculty, characteristics, aspects, \t\t\tMi
