That undeterminable (karma), from which various virtuous and non-virtuous (results) later arise, is contradictory. If (good and evil seeds) are different, then these (197b) seeds, being mind and mental factors, would lead to the fault of having multiple continua (streams) on a single basis. Regarding this, the Noble Ones have stated that (seeds and their results) are inexpressible as either identical or different. In the explanation, the Sautrantikas explained by taking the consciousness that apprehends the meaning-aspects and the pure aspects as examples, holding that they are inexpressible as either identical or different. Likewise, imprints (bag chags), the store consciousness (kun gzhi), and their cessation (ldog pa) are also said to be inexpressible as identical, and also inexpressible as different substances. The fifth, the manner of establishment, is: Established by nourishing the existing and generating the non-existent. Regarding this, although there are different views among the masters (Acaryas), if one considers the types of imprints (bag chags), since they have been habituated from beginningless saṃsāra, nourishing the existing (imprints) is primary for their establishment (or production). However, there are also cases where they are established (or produced) by generating the non-existent, such as newly arisen ripening imprints (rnam smin gyi bag chags) and newly deposited imprints from hearing (thos pa'i bag chags). Masters like Dharmapāla (Chos skyong) hold this view that both exist. Second, the explanation of the defiled mind (nyon yid) has four parts: 1. Definition, 2. Basis, 3. Function, 4. Engagement and Disengagement. First, the definition is: Self-grasping, obscured by its own nature, and undeterminable. It is any principal consciousness that is capable of acting as a predominant condition for mental attention (yid byed), vaguely cognizes the meaning of the store consciousness (kun gzhi), and is not completely pacified. Until the attainment of the Noble Path ('phags lam), it constantly grasps at the self, perceiving the store consciousness (kun gzhi'i rnam shes) as its object, is obscured by the defilements (nyon mongs pa) of the mental ground (yid kyi sa), and is therefore undeterminable. Second, the basis (or examples) is: The mind conjoined with the four defilements and so forth. Specifically, it is the self-grasping mind that is conjoined with the four defilements—self-ignorance (bdag tu rmongs pa), self-view (bdag tu lta ba), self-attachment (bdag la chags pa), and self-conceit (bdag tu nga rgyal ba)—and (from within the 'and so forth') the five omnipresent (mental factors) (kun 'gro lnga), self-view (bdag lta), pride (nga rgyal), ignorance (ma rig), and doubt (the tshom), totaling nine (mental factors). Third, the function is: Binding with defilements and planting seeds. It acts as a predominant condition for the mind-consciousness (yid shes), and by serving as a basis for the binding of the six collections (tshogs drug) to their objects (mtshan ma), it binds to defiled things (zag bcas) and plants seeds in the store consciousness (kun gzhi). Fourth, the engagement and disengagement is: Continuously engages with the store consciousness, but disengages for the Noble Ones. The manifest defiled mind, along with its retinue, even for Arhats (dgra bcom)...

It does not arise in the equipoise of noble ones, in the absorption of cessation, and in the grounds of no-more-learning, but arises in the path of learning and in the subsequent attainment of the absorption of cessation. Except for these stages, in all stages of wholesome, unwholesome, and undetermined phenomena, it continuously operates, apprehending the (Tibetan: ཀུན་གཞི་, Sanskrit Devanagari: आलयविज्ञान, Sanskrit Romanization: ālayavijñāna, Chinese literal meaning: fundamental consciousness), and ceases upon attaining the noble grounds. Moreover, its imagined aspect ceases from the first ground of the Mahayana path of seeing. Its habitual tendencies or innate aspect cease through transformation on the eighth ground of the Mahayana path of meditation. Its subtle latent tendencies cease simultaneously with the cessation of the (Tibetan: ཀུན་གཞི་, Sanskrit Devanagari: आलयविज्ञान, Sanskrit Romanization: ālayavijñāna, Chinese literal meaning: fundamental consciousness), which is at the end of the tenth ground. In the Buddha-ground, it ultimately transforms into the wisdom of equality. There are many scriptural proofs for this, and six types of reasoning are taught in the *Mahayanasamgraha*. A digression arising from this is, as it is said: What consciousness immediately following the six, That is the mind. In this way, regarding the mind that immediately follows the cessation of the group of six consciousnesses, Je Rangjungpa (Ranjung Dorje) coined the term "sixth mind." Although it is not the defiled mind (manas), it is also known by the synonym "mind." Some also call it "mind that has become a phenomenon of the defiled mind." It is said that the dominant condition for the undefiled wisdom in the continuum of noble ones must also be fulfilled by that mind which immediately follows the cessation of the six. Again, in this context, some say: the primary aspect of mind is the (Tibetan: ཀུན་གཞི་, Sanskrit Devanagari: आलयविज्ञान, Sanskrit Romanization: ālayavijñāna, Chinese literal meaning: fundamental consciousness). There are two types of mind (yid): ultimate mind and momentary mind (198b). The former is the defiled mind (manas), and the latter is the six engaging consciousnesses; it is also termed "consciousness that immediately ceases." Part 3, Explanation of the Six Consciousnesses, has four (sections): 1. Nature, 2. Characteristics, 3. Abode, Object, and Companion (three aspects), 4. Function and manner of arising. 1. The first: The nature of engaging, upon various appearing objects; The apprehending consciousness arises endowed with four conditions. The nature of engaging consciousness is: generally, it is established as consciousness by virtue of understanding various objects. That is to say, because it arises clearly and repeatedly apprehending each of the various appearing objects, it is called "engaging," and because it closely apprehends the nature of the object, it is called "consciousness." Among these, from eye consciousness to mind consciousness
