Six. Each of these arises relying on four conditions: the objective condition of eye consciousness is form appearing as if external to itself; the predominant condition is the eye faculty; the immediately preceding condition is the uninterrupted mind that preceded it; the causal condition is reliance on the Alaya-vijñana, from which arises a consciousness characterized by distinctly apprehending each form. Similarly, the four (consciousnesses) of ear, nose, tongue, and body are each associated with their respective four conditions. The objective condition of mind consciousness is the knowable phenomenon appearing as if distinct from itself; the predominant condition, except in special cases, is the defiled mind (klista-manas); the immediately preceding condition is the attention that preceded it; the causal condition is reliance on the Alaya-vijñana, from which arises a mind consciousness characterized by distinctly apprehending each phenomenon. Regarding the special case: the predominant condition of the stainless wisdom in the continuum of a noble being must be the sixth consciousness that has just ceased. Although the nature of these (consciousnesses) is undetermined, due to the influence of assisting conditions, they can arise as virtuous, non-virtuous, or undetermined. 2. Second, [Definition]: Definition (page 199) relies on the predominant condition, and the source of arising appears. The definition of these six (consciousnesses) is, for example, that a sense consciousness appearing as the source of arising of form, relying on the predominant condition of the eye faculty, is the definition of eye consciousness; and a principal consciousness that apprehends its own object, the source of arising of phenomena, relying on its own predominant condition, the mind faculty, which is substantially distinct from the defiled mind (klista-manas), is the definition of the sixth, mind consciousness. 3. Third, [Dwelling Place, Object, and Companion]: The dwelling place of the faculty apprehends the object and is accompanied by companions. Generally, the dwelling place is the Alaya-vijñana, which is the dwelling place of all seeds. The immediately preceding dwelling place is the immediately ceased mind. The co-emergent dwelling place of mind consciousness is the defiled mind (klista-manas). The dwelling place that makes the six collections (of consciousness) virtuous or non-virtuous are the pervasive mental factors, etc. The dwelling place that makes everything defiled and binds one to mental constructs is the defiled mind (klista-manas). Specifically, the co-emergent dwelling places of the five doors are their respective faculties such as the eye. The objects apprehended are the six: form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and phenomena. The companions are the five pervasive mental factors (kun 'gro lnga) and other mental factors. 4. Fourth, [Function and Mode of Arising]:
