Ripen. The definition of impregnated latent imprints is: the special capacity for phenomena similar to that phenomenon to arise, based on the simultaneous arising and ceasing of the alaya-consciousness with phenomena, is the similar-cause latent imprint. The capacity impregnated on the alaya-consciousness by other phenomena, which becomes the contributory condition for the arising of other phenomena, is the definition of ripening latent imprints. Second, the divisions are: Outer, inner, unclear, conventional truth, ultimate reality. Six types of seeds. That is: outer seeds such as rice; inner seeds existing in the alaya-consciousness; the two unclear ones are those that are not clearly virtuous or non-virtuous, or afflictive or purifying, thus undetermined. The outer conventional refers to the sphere of worldly discourse; the inner ultimate refers to the basis of all seeds, which is bearable upon analysis. Thus, there are six types of seeds. Third, the nature is: Residing in five natures. That is: this latent imprint of seeds, as soon as it arises, it ceases, being momentary; without being interrupted by another moment, it immediately produces fruit, thus it is simultaneously arising; and it continuously arises until it is not destroyed by antidotes; although many latent imprints exist simultaneously, they arise only through specific determination for each; and they arise from the most proximate condition; since seeds arise through a beginningless continuum, their own fruits prove the existence of the seeds; and seeds also prove the fruits, just as alaya-consciousness arises from alaya-consciousness, and rice arises from rice, thus they abide co-existent with the five natures. These seeds and natures are the assertions of Dignaga. Fourth, the mode of abiding is: Whatever establishes it, it is undetermined. It cannot be said to be identical or different from that substance. If asked, in what essence do these latent imprints abide? Whatever establishes them, whether virtuous, non-virtuous, or undetermined, the latent imprints themselves are undetermined, because they are substantially identical with the undetermined alaya-consciousness. Then, if the latent imprints are not diverse, how can they serve as the cause for diverse phenomena? Although at the time of the latent imprints they do not appear as diverse, at the time of the fruit's accomplishment, they themselves transform into diverse phenomena. This is also called the profound and subtle dependent origination in Mahayana. How does that same (thing) abide as one and different? Latent imprints and the alaya-consciousness are substantially identical...
