In all stages (grounds), it operates together with the defiled mind. In the formless realm, it operates together with the mind and the two mind-consciousnesses. In the form realm, with the five consciousnesses. In the desire realm, it operates with the seven aggregates (consciousnesses) according to conditions. Similarly, in whichever realm and whichever destiny there is whatever feeling, and whatever wholesome, unwholesome, or indeterminate mental factors exist, these also operate together appropriately. However, it should not be said that these are mutually associated. The continuous operation of rebirth is when the ālayavijñāna of this life is exhausted, being nourished by the imprints of karma and the imprints of grasping (subject and object), the ālayavijñāna of the next life arises, and when that is exhausted, the one after that arises, and so on. M2. Second, the manner of cessation (or reversal). It ceases when the vajra-like samādhi arises and at the time of Arhatship. According to the Mahayana tradition, the ripening aspect of the ālayavijñāna ceases immediately after the vajra-like samādhi arises, by transforming into the mirror-like wisdom. In the Hinayana tradition, it ceases when one attains Arhatship and passes into nirvāṇa without remainder, at which time consciousness is also held to be cut off. The unwholesome aspect of the seeds ceases when its respective antidote arises and becomes stable. This also has various names. In Mahayana, it is known as the 'basis of knowables' because it is the ground of the three natures of knowables. Because it repeatedly connects (with rebirths), takes on bodies, and sustains them, it is called the 'appropriating consciousness' (ādāna-vijñāna). Because it is the support for all seeds, it is called the 'consciousness containing all seeds' (sarvabījakam-vijñānam). (196a) When it definitely ripens and arises from previous defiled karma, it is called the 'ripening consciousness' (vipāka-vijñāna). Commonly known, because it is the basis of all saṃsāra and nirvāṇa, it is referred to as the 'ālayavijñāna' (store-consciousness). In Hinayana, it is known as the 'root consciousness,' the 'aggregate as long as saṃsāra exists,' the 'limb of existence,' and 'ripening consciousness,' etc., all of which are synonymous with this. Although there is no difference in its essence, there are many characteristics of differentiation based on imprints. The proofs from scripture and reasoning are summarized as appearing in eight categories, and so on. B5. Fifth, explaining the imprints arising from the aspect of seeds, there are two parts: M1. Brief presentation. M2. Extensive explanation. M1. The first is: The manner of establishing the basis for imprints, and

Os! \t\t\tIf we thoroughly analyze the meaning of what was previously explained as "endowed with habitual tendencies," \t\t\tM2 [Secondly, there are four points in the extensive explanation:] C1 The basis upon which imprints are deposited; C2 That by which imprints are deposited; C3 The manner in which imprints are deposited; C4 The actual explanation of the deposited imprints. \t\t\tC1 Firstly, it states: \t\t\tContinuum stable, indistinct, capable of deposition, and connected with that which deposits. \t\t\tThis means: Imprints are to be deposited on the continually stable *kunzhi* (alaya-vijnana/store consciousness), not on the unstable six consciousnesses or external forms. Imprints are deposited on the *kunzhi*, which is neither virtuous nor non-virtuous (undetermined), and whose objective aspect, nature, etc., are not very clearly perceived by ordinary beings, shravakas, pratyekabuddhas, etc. However, they are not deposited on the six engaging consciousnesses that arise as virtuous or non-virtuous with very clear objective aspects and natures, nor on the defiled mind (klesha-manas) which, though undetermined, has extremely clear and definitively determined objective aspects. \t\t\tImprints are deposited on the *kunzhi* which is impermanent and capable of being held (as a basis for deposition); they are not deposited on permanent phenomena like space or the unexamined cessation, etc. Imprints are deposited on the *kunzhi* (196b) which is of the same continuum and simultaneously connected with that which deposits, but not on that which is different. \t\t\tC2 Secondly, regarding that which deposits imprints: \t\t\tThe seven consciousnesses with their retinue are precisely that which deposits imprints. \t\t\tThis means: The seven consciousnesses, together with their concomitant mental factors, which are capable of activating potentiality on the object to be deposited, deposit imprints. The six defiled consciousnesses, whether virtuous or non-virtuous, deposit both the imprints of maturation (vipaka) and similar causes (hetu-sahabhaga). However, the undetermined (consciousness) and the defiled mind (klesha-manas) deposit imprints of similar causes, but not imprints of maturation. Although physical and verbal actions (corporeal) do not directly deposit imprints, the volition that motivates them does, and thus they produce results. \t\t\tC3 Thirdly, regarding the manner in which imprints are deposited: \t\t\tEven if they cease, they are capable of producing results. \t\t\tThis means: From the *kunzhi* and the seven consciousnesses, which arise as virtuous, non-virtuous, or undetermined, having been together for a long time and simultaneously arising and ceasing, afterwards, even though those depositing phenomena cease, a continuum of imprints that are similar to them or capable of producing their results continues to reside in the *kunzhi*. \t\t\tC4 Fourthly, concerning the deposited imprints, there are five points: C1 Definition; C2 Divisions; C3 Nature; C4 Conditions of existence; C5 Manner of deposition. \t\t\tC1 Firstly, it states: \t\t\tOf that which is deposited, \t\t\tin the form of a similar cause that produces another (result).
