As for the present division, the fourteenth is in the category of what has not been attained. The fifteenth and the subsequent nine are so designated because they are included in the category of causal and resultant stages. All of these are also encompassed within the eight divisions. Fifth: The Aggregate of Consciousness has two parts: P1 Brief Presentation, P2 Extensive Explanation. P1: The first is: Mind (sems), Mental Faculty (yid), and Consciousness (rnam par shes pa) are the eight collections (tshogs brgyad). Moreover, these three—Mind, Mental Faculty, and Consciousness—are considered by the two (schools of) Vaibhashika and Sautrantika as general terms for the six collections (of consciousness). Furthermore, the two (schools of) Madhyamaka and Cittamatra (page 194b), generally teach them, or in a broad sense, apply them as general terms for the eight collections (of consciousness). Its definition is: The mind whose nature is to distinctly perceive and understand the essence of objects, and to individually discern the essence of its respective object of focus. If taught primarily, or in terms of distinguishing to dispel doubts, these three are applied separately: That which is designated as "mind" (sems), which accumulates all imprints or seeds of aggregates, elements, and sense sources, focuses on various things, and contemplates their meaning, is none other than the Alaya-vijñana (store consciousness). That consciousness which is constantly filled with the pride of thinking "I am" in a clear manner, and is endowed with mental imputation, and whose nature is self-conceit and grasping at "I", and is thus designated as "mental faculty" (yid), is none other than the defiled mental faculty (kliṣṭa-manas). That which distinctly focuses on various particulars and engages with individual specific objects, and is thus designated as "consciousness" (rnam shes), refers only to the six active consciousnesses (pravṛtti-vijñāna). From Gyen Tuk (Ornament): Mind is the Alaya-vijñana. The mental faculty is the self-grasping essence. That which apprehends objects Is called consciousness. P2: The second part [Extensive Explanation] has three divisions: Ph1 The Mind (sems), Alaya-vijñana; Ph2 The Defiled Mental Faculty (yid nyon yid); Ph3 Explanation of the Six Active Consciousnesses. Ph1: The first part has five sub-divisions: B1 Definition, B2 Illustration/Basis of Definition, B3 Object of Focus, B4 Engagement and Disengagement, B5 Explanation of imprints arising from the aspect of seeds. P1: The first is: The Alaya-vijñana is undefiled and indeterminate. It is the basis for the distribution of imprints, seeds, and the ripening aspect. The common general definition of the Alaya-vijñana is: That principal consciousness which is undefiled and indeterminate, which has become the basis for the distribution of imprints, and appropriately sustains all ripening (karma) and seeds.

I am the cognition of the essence of meaning. \t\t\tFrom the perspective of the term “part”, the definition of the seed-part is: any latent tendency existing in the alaya-consciousness (195a), which functions as a causal condition for the generation of other phenomena and their fruits. The definition of the ripening-part is: the alaya-consciousness, in which seeds have fully ripened based on latent tendencies from beginningless time. Both of these, when considered as future phenomena, are seeds; when considered as past phenomena, are ripening; and both, from the aspect of being the cognition of the essence of meaning, are consciousness. Therefore, all three have a single essence as the alaya-consciousness. \t\t\tSecond, illustrative examples: \t\t\tUnclear, subtle, appearing as objects, and endowed with concomitant factors. \t\t\tAmong these, the general illustrative example is: with respect to the inner appropriating cause and the outer container world, its aspect is unclear and subtle, merely capable of manifesting as an object. It is accompanied by the five omnipresent mental factors, and particularly associated with the feeling of equanimity. Its essence is not obscured by afflictions and is indeterminate as either wholesome or unwholesome. It continues without interruption throughout the duration of samsara. The illustrative example of the seed-part is: the alaya-consciousness itself, which is the part endowed with latent tendencies, serving as the potential to generate phenomena. The illustrative example of the ripening-part is: the part that is projected by previous defiled actions and is endowed with the phenomena of ripening. \t\t\tThird, the modes of observation are: \t\t\tApprehending defilements. \t\t\tThat is to say, the internal object of observation is: the appropriation of defilements, such as the nāmarūpa aggregates. The external object is: the appearance as the container world. Even in the formless realm, it observes merely the seeds and a partial aspect of the nāmarūpa. Its aspect is: although the appearance of the object has not yet ceased, it is unclear because it cannot cut off superimposition, and since it is not definitively fixed to one extreme, the object is not fully exhausted. \t\t\tFourth, there are two aspects of engagement and disengagement: 1. Mode of engagement, and 2. Mode of disengagement. \t\t\tFirst, the mode of engagement is: \t\t\tContinuously engaging in the three realms. \t\t\tThat is to say, its sphere of engagement is the three realms, and the manner of engagement is continuous engagement. It (195b) engages by observing outer and inner objects. It engages solely accompanied by the five omnipresent mental factors. One acts as a condition for the other, with the alaya-consciousness and the evolving consciousnesses mutually relying on each other like a nest. Concurrent engagement, apart from the absorption of cessation, there is no existence of mind.
