like relying on that. \t\t\tSecond, object-similarity is: apprehending a single object. For example, when eye-consciousness apprehends form, feeling also apprehends that. \t\t\tThird, aspect-similarity is: having the same apprehended aspect of the mode of apprehension. For example, when eye-consciousness arises with the aspect of blue, feeling also arises with that. \t\t\tFourth, time-similarity is: arising simultaneously. For example, whenever eye-consciousness arises, feeling also arises. \t\t\tFifth, substance-similarity is: being of similar type and equal number. For example, when eye-consciousness is a single substance, its retinue, feeling, is also just a single substance. \t\t\tHere, the refutation of doubts, such as contradictions between aspect-similarity and time-similarity, is not mentioned; therefore, it should be known from the scriptures. \t\t\tSection 2: Second, the examination of unity and difference. \t\t\tAlthough it is permissible to assert them as one, in this system, they are different. \t\t\tIf one asks whether mind and mental factors are one substance or different? Although there are assertions such as those who advocate for the oneness of Bodhisattvas, and the glorious Dharmakīrti asserted them as a single substance, and Acarya Candrakīrti explained them as different, in this system, as the noble Asaṅga stated that if mind and mental factors are not substantially different, then the presentation of the five aggregates becomes untenable, along with six other flaws, we must follow that. Although they are thus different, since they cannot be separately demonstrated as “this” like a material object, their distinction is difficult to discern, but it should be known by relying on trustworthy scriptural reasoning, just as the sense faculties are established in forms (page 188na). \t\t\tSection 3: Third, determining the principal and retinue. \t\t\tThe all-ground consciousness, the five omnipresent mental factors, and the defiled mind, \t\t\tThe four root afflictions and the six secondary afflictions, \t\t\tAll also arise as retinues of the apprehending consciousnesses. \t\t\tThis is calculating which of the fifty-one mental factors arise within the framework of the eight principal consciousnesses, grouped into three categories. Specifically, the five omnipresent mental factors as the retinue of the all-ground consciousness; and those five (omnipresent mental factors) as the retinue of the defiled mind, and among the six root afflictions: desire, pride, ignorance, and the four views of the transitory collection, [and] among the secondary afflictions: distraction, heedlessness, agitation, lack of faith, laziness, dullness—six arise. Others do not arise because their nature, apprehended aspect, etc., are not similar. \t\t\tWith the apprehending consciousnesses...

Like seeing a form without the wish to see, this is a proximate condition; like seeing with the wish to see, this is mind-preceded. Among these two: In the retinue of the first (seeing without desire), only the five omnipresent mental factors arise; as there is no room for others to arise. In the second (seeing with desire), in the retinue of the virtuous five sense doors (consciousnesses), first arise twenty-one (virtuous mental factors), plus investigation and analysis, totaling twenty-three. In its afflictive retinue, first arise ten (omnipresent and five object-determining mental factors), plus the three poisons (desire, hatred, ignorance) from the root afflictions, and the latter ten (of the indeterminate mental factors) from the secondary afflictions, plus investigation and analysis, totaling twenty-five. In its indeterminate retinue, first arise ten (omnipresent and five object-determining mental factors) and investigation and analysis, totaling twelve. In the retinue of the virtuous mind consciousness, in the desire realm, first arise twenty-one (virtuous mental factors) and the four variable (mental factors), totaling twenty-five. In its afflictive retinue, all (mental factors) arise except the eleven virtuous ones. In its indeterminate retinue, first arise ten (omnipresent and five object-determining mental factors) and the latter four (indeterminate mental factors). In brief, all mental factors arise depending on the specific circumstances. The reasons for these (mental factors) can be known by examining them based on their respective characteristics (188b). 2. Second, specifically explaining the distinctions of mental factors, there are two parts: 1. The distinction between substantially existent and imputedly existent. 2. Explaining their respective classifications. 1. The first part is: Substantially existent are twenty-two, imputedly existent are twenty-nine. Among those four (categories of mental factors), (there are) independently existent and parts. Mental factors. So it is said. Generally, regarding the method of establishing substantially existent and imputedly existent, in the scriptures, there are four criteria for deeming something substantially existent: “ability to perform functions,” “established by reason,” “continuous existence,” and “independent existence.” Here, however, only the last criterion is established as substantially existent, meaning that its independent nature does not depend on the appearance of other general meanings. Otherwise, everything would become substantially existent because it can perform functions and is established by reason; and “self-grasping” would also become substantially existent because of its continuous existence. Similarly, there are also four types of imputedly existent: those imputed on situations, like non-associated formations; those falsely imputed without existence, like “self” and “rabbit horns”; those imputed on others (phenomena), like a vase; and those imputed on parts, meaning that the parts of the phenomena serving as the basis of imputation are not discarded. Acarya Bhartṛhari said: whatever is established as existing independently in its own continuum is substantially existent, and that which does not abide therein is imputedly existent.
