established as phenomena, the cause is designated by the name of the effect. D.4. The fourth section has two parts: W.1. General explanation of the root afflictions; W.2. Specific differentiation of views. W.1. The first is: The six root afflictions. Thus, these are: Attachment, anger, pride, Ignorance, doubt, and view, These are the six types of root afflictions. Among these: Attachment (འདོད་ཆགས་) is clinging to the abodes, bodies, and enjoyments of the three realms. Anger (ཁོང་ཁྲོ་) is being greatly tormented and vexed in mind, focusing on sentient beings who cause harm, suffering from harm, and causes of harm such as poisons and weapons. Pride (ང་རྒྱལ་) is a lofty mind of haughtiness, based on the view of the perishable aggregates. Ignorance (མ་རིག་པ་) has two types: delusion regarding reality itself (suchness) and delusion regarding the meaning of the Four Noble Truths; here, it refers to the latter. Doubt (ཐེ་ཚོམ་): Although there are many classifications, here it refers to hesitation regarding truth and the law of cause and effect. Pride (ང་རྒྱལ་) also has seven subdivisions: 1. Pride: The mind is puffed up, thinking oneself equal to those with good qualities. 2. Great Pride: Thinking oneself superior to those who are equal. 3. Pride over Pride: Thinking oneself superior even to those who are superior to oneself. 4. "I-am" Pride: The pride that thinks "I am" by viewing the aggregates as a self. 5. Overweening Pride: Thinking one has attained good qualities that one has not yet attained. 6. Wrong Pride: Holding that which is not a good quality to be a good quality. 7. Inferior Pride: Thinking oneself only slightly inferior to those who are exceedingly distinguished. W.2. The second part, [Specific differentiation of views], has two parts: Z.1. Nature; Z.2. Classification. Z.1. The first is: Among them, view is wisdom (190b) that is afflicted. The nature of what is specifically called "view" among those root afflictions is wisdom that is afflicted. Affliction is the unsettled continuum or activity of the mind. Z.2. The second has two parts: D.1. Classification by nature; D.2. Classification by inclusion. D.1. The first is: The nature is the five views: view of the perishable aggregates, extreme view, etc. The nature of the wrong views: view of the perishable aggregates, extreme view, and included in "etc." are: holding wrong views as supreme, holding moral discipline and ascetic practices as supreme, and wrong view. Among these five: The first is: the view of the perishable aggregates, which is viewing the five aggregates of appropriation, which are perishable, impermanent, and a multitude of composite phenomena, as self or as belonging to self.
