The suffering of anguish concomitant with consciousness is pain; the mental unhappiness of anguish concomitant with mental consciousness is displeasure; the indifference where neither joy nor suffering exists is equanimity; these are the five. Third, the skandha of perception has two parts: 1. Its nature; 2. Its classifications. First, its nature is: 'Perceiving by aggregation' (page 186, lower). This means that due to the aggregation of three or four conditions, consciousness apprehends and distinguishes the specific features, characteristics, or signs of objects, and is a mental factor that is able to apprehend each without confusion. Second, [its classification] has two parts: 1. Classification by nature; 2. Classification by stage or object of focus. First, by nature: There are six perceptions, from the perception arising from the aggregation and contact of the eye sense organ to the perception arising from the aggregation and contact of the ear sense organ. Second, [classification by stage or object of focus] is: Six types of perceptions included in the grounds, such as signless perception. Among them, signless perception is: the perception at the time of entering the absorption of suchness, not proficient in conventional expressions. The perception included in the ground of the summit of existence (bhavagra) is: perception with signs. All other perceptions included in the grounds of the three realms. Minor perception is: perception included in the ground of the desire realm. Major perception is: perception included in the ground of the form realm. Immeasurable perception is: perception included in the spheres of infinite space and infinite consciousness. Nothingness perception is: perception included in the ground of the sphere of nothingness, making six in total. Fourth, the skandha of formations has two parts: 1. Its nature; 2. Its classifications. First, its nature is: 'Constructing towards the object.' This means that due to the aggregation of various conditions, it causes the mind to construct towards an unapprehended object, and stirs and moves the mind towards various objects. It is a mental factor characterized by agitating the mind towards diverse objects. Second, [its classification] has two parts: 1. Classification by nature; 2. Classification by stage. First, its nature has six types. This means: from the mind arising from the aggregation and contact of the eye sense organ, constructing towards the object, up to the mind arising from the aggregation and contact of the mental sense organ, constructing towards the object (page 187, upper).

Up to manifest mental formations. Regarding this, scholars use the terms 'mental factors' and 'mind'. Part 2 [Classification by Temporary State] has two sections: 1. Brief Explanation; 2. Detailed Explanation. 1. The first section (Brief Explanation) is: Temporarily, mind and mental factors are concurrent or non-concurrent, two types. In terms of classification by temporary state, there are two kinds: mental formations concurrent with mind, and mental formations non-concurrent with mind. 2. The second section (Detailed Explanation) has two parts: 1. Concurrent; 2. Non-concurrent mental formations. 1. The first part (Concurrent) has two sections: 1. General explanation of mind and mental factors; 2. Specific explanation of mental factors. 1. The first section (General explanation of mind and mental factors) has three parts: 1. Identifying their own nature; 2. Examining unity and difference; 3. Determining the principal and its retinue. 1. The first part (Identifying their own nature) has two sections: 1. Distinctions of characteristics; 2. Explained by concurrence. The first section is: Mind is the essence of the object, Mental factors are the knowing of the distinctions of the object. Generally, what are the characteristics of what are called mind and mental factors? Indeed, forms, sounds, etc., appearing as phenomena, like a basis, are the essence of the object; that which apprehends these, the eight collections of consciousness, is mind. The states of happiness and suffering, agreeable or disagreeable, etc., appearing like dependent qualities of that object, are the distinctions of the object; that which apprehends these, the fifty-one such as feelings, are mental factors. Therefore, mind is that which knows the essence of the object, and mental factors are that which knows the distinctions of the object, as stated in the *Madhyanta-Vibhaga*. 2. The second part [Explained by concurrence] is: Follows the mind with five concurrences such as basis. The principal, mind, and the retinue, mental factors—these two are inseparable and are concurrently associated in five ways, as explained in the *Five Aggregates* and the commentary by Lob (187b). Namely: concurrence in basis, and within 'etc.', concurrence in object, concurrence in aspect, concurrence in time, and concurrence in substance—by these five types of concurrences, mental factors follow the mind. Regarding this, first, concurrence in basis means both the principal and its retinue rely on a single sense faculty. When eye consciousness relies on the eye faculty, its retinue, feeling, also...
