Its apprehended objects are form and the other five external sensory objects. There are twenty-five sense-forms, divided into six or four categories. What are the resultant forms born from the great four elements as causes? Their specific characteristics are the five external objects, such as form, which are apprehended by the eye and other faculties. Firstly, regarding forms that are objects of the eye, twenty-five are individually enumerated: Blue, yellow, red, white, long, short, even, round, Fine, coarse, smooth, uneven, high, low, obstructed, Sunlight, darkness, clouds, smoke, dust, mist, empty space, Visibly available forms, forms that reveal intention, And those of the same color as space; these are them. Thus it is said. By characteristics, it is also explained as six categories. In summary: classified by color, there are blue, red, etc. Classified by shape, there are even, round, etc. Classified by mode of appearance, like the clear appearance of space, these are called "visibly available forms." Classified by temporary state, such as the bodily movements of lifting and placing, and performing prostrations, etc., where the preceding intention can be known by others, these are called "forms that reveal intention" (rnam par rig byed kyi gzugs). This is a designated existent based on temporary states, while the two Sravaka schools assert it as substantially existent; these are the four. Alternatively, they are subsumed under four: good, bad, neutral, and color-like. Sound has eleven types, divided into four categories, thus making five. Smell has six, taste has twelve, touch has twenty-two (185a). Second, the classification of sound: Pleasant, unpleasant, and neither of the two are three. Apprehended and non-apprehended, produced from the great elements as cause; Both are three: worldly renown, Taught by the accomplished, and thoroughly conceptualized are three; Noble and ignoble, conventionally designated are two. Thus, eleven individual ones. It is also explained as four categories, such as being divided by benefit and harm. In summary: classified by the manner of inducing feeling, there are pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral, three types. Classified by apprehended or non-apprehended by mind: apprehended are singing, etc.; non-apprehended are water sounds, etc.; both are like the sound of a person beating a drum, etc., three types. Classified by designation and conventional terms: worldly designated ones like jars, cloth, etc.; taught by the accomplished ones like emptiness, selflessness, etc.
