...as stated. Regarding the fruit of liberation, in the *Letter to a Friend* (Suhrllekha) it is said: Attain freedom from earth, water, fire, wind, sun, and moon. As stated, the Lokāyata (Chārvāka) school believes that the four elements with consciousness and their separation from them are both samsara and nirvana, thus equating liberation with the four elements. Furthermore, from the *Praise of the Exalted* (Ārya-stava) it is said: The parrot, having pierced the sun, Is said to have attained liberation. And so on, some consider the sun and moon to be liberation. Some, like the Digambaras (naked ascetics), believe liberation is like an umbrella opened in the expanse of space; being ignorant of the liberation to be attained, they are also ignorant of the path to achieve it. However, the doctrine of the Victorious One (Buddha) considers liberation, or nirvana, as the truth of cessation. Because those who practice this (doctrine) will attain temporary and ultimate happiness, which is superior to external (non-Buddhist) systems and is the source of all benefits and well-being without exception, undoubtedly, the excellent one is solely the doctrine of the Victorious One (Buddha). --- 2. Elaboration on the Classification of Buddhist Systems: Though classifications are many, generally there are three Yānas, The four commonly known philosophical schools are also causes of samsara, All agree on attaining nirvana by abandoning self-grasping. Regarding the Buddha's doctrine, from the perspective of the scriptural Dharma, the methods of detailed classification and summary have been extensively taught in the Kangyur (Buddha's words) and Tengyur (treatises). As Āryadeva says in the *Compendium of the Essence* (Snying-po kun-btus) (182 verso): The Buddha's Dharma is of four kinds, Those who desire it clearly see it. The paths of Vaibhāṣikas and others, By explaining them, one accomplishes that (truth). As stated, all the holy Dharma of the Buddha's doctrine is definitively categorized into four philosophical schools: Vaibhāṣika, Sautrāntika, Yogācāra, and Madhyamaka. These (four) also converge into three: those who assert external objects (Realists), Mind-Only (Cittamātra), and Madhyamaka who assert non-inherent existence, because both Vaibhāṣika and Sautrāntika are included in the Realists. Moreover, the former two (Vaibhāṣika and Sautrāntika) are definitively Hinayana, and the latter two (Yogācāra and Madhyamaka) are Mahayana, thus they also converge into two Yānas. Furthermore, in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra, it is explained that all doctrines are categorized into five Yānas, as it is said: The Deva-Yāna and Brahma-Yāna, Likewise, the Śrāvaka-Yāna, Pratyekabuddha-Yāna and Buddha-Yāna, These Yānas...

These are what I have explained. So it is said. Furthermore, if summarized, the former two are for higher rebirth (śreyas), and the latter three are for definite goodness (niḥśreyasa), thus converging into two vehicles, as stated in the *Ratnāvalī* (Precious Garland). Similarly, if applied to the instructions of Prajñāpāramitā, the former two are the path of the lower scope practitioner, the middle two are the path of the middle scope practitioner, and the last is the path of the great scope practitioner, thereby also converging into the three paths of the three types of practitioners. Well then, if one asserts five vehicles, from the *Vajrahṛdaya-vyākhyā* (Commentary on the Vajra Heart) it says: For Buddhahood, there is no fourth (vehicle), And the fifth is not the Buddha's intent. It states that there is no fourth vehicle and no fifth philosophical tenet, so would this not contradict (the assertion of five vehicles)? From the *Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra* (Lotus Sūtra) it states: The great sage taught three vehicles, Which are the skillful means of the guides. As stated above, this was taught with the intention that there is no fourth vehicle on the path to complete liberation (vimukti-mārga), and since the subject of discussion here is different, there is not the slightest contradiction. Furthermore, from the *Caryāsaṃgrahapradīpa* (Lamp for the Collection of Conduct), it is stated that according to the three inclinations of sentient beings to be tamed, three types of conduct are summarized: For those with lesser inclinations, the conduct of detachment is taught; for those with vast inclinations, the conduct of stages (bhūmis) and perfections (pāramitās) is taught; and for those with profound inclinations, the conduct of desire is taught. Furthermore, from Acarya Tripiṭaka's *Trikālacakrapradīpa* (Lamp of the Three Modes), it states: That which reveals the mode of true reality, And also the meaning of the perfection's mode, And also the meaning of the great secret mantra's mode, Are summarized and taught herein. Thus, it is summarized into three modes: the mode of the yogi of the Four Noble Truths, the mode of the yogi of the Perfections, and the mode of the yogi of the Great Secret Mantra. Acarya Jñānakīrti (Ye-shes Grags-pa) also summarized all the teachings in the same way in his *Kāyasaṃkṣepa-rābhyakaraṇa* (Treatise on Summarizing All Teachings). From the *Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra* (Ornament of the Mahāyāna Sūtras) it says: The Pitakas may be three or two, Both can be considered valid. Thus, the teachings are summarized into two piṭakas, the superior and the inferior, or two vehicles. Although many treatises primarily summarize them as the three vehicles: the Śrāvakayāna (Hearers' Vehicle), the Pratyekabuddhayāna (Solitary Buddhas' Vehicle), and the Bodhisattvayāna (Bodhisattvas' Vehicle), and so forth, many such (classifications) appear. What is generally renowned are the three vehicles and the four philosophical tenets. All of these aim to abandon the cause of cyclic existence—self-grasping—thereby achieving the state of liberation and nirvāṇa.
