Abandoning both the extreme of asceticism and the extreme of desire for enjoyment, it is by these that one differentiates those who desire or do not desire the unique cessation truth, which is the exhaustion of what is to be abandoned, leading to liberation as a result. \t\t\tAs stated in the Vinaya-prabha-vyakhyana: \t\t\tThe Three Trainings are excellently taught, \t\t\tAnd perfectly endowed with the four seals. \t\t\tVirtuous in the beginning, middle, and end, \t\t\tThe wise understand this to be the Buddha's speech. \t\t\tSo it is stated. \t\t\tThe four seals are the four dharma seals. As stated in the Gyangwa Samgyi Mikhyabpa (Secret Inconceivable Sutra): The Tathagata gathered all phenomena into four principles: All conditioned phenomena are impermanent; all contaminated phenomena are suffering; all phenomena are selfless; Nirvana is peace. So it is stated. \t\t\tIf it is asked whether the Vatsiputriya school of our own tradition also asserts a self and accepts compounded phenomena that are not momentarily perishable, and thus it is contradictory, there is no fault. This is because they do not assert the self to be different from the aggregates and permanent, nor do they accept it as a permanent entity that can never perish. Therefore, there is a significant difference from non-Buddhist (Tirthika) views. \t\t\tThe antidote to the apex of existence (samsara) is not found among the non-Buddhists. This is because they turn away from the path characterized by the truth of selflessness, and there is no higher ground, thus there is no aspect of subtle peace. \t\t\tAs Master Ashvaghosha stated: \t\t\tThose who do not turn to your teaching, \t\t\tBeings blinded by ignorance, \t\t\tEven having reached the apex of existence, \t\t\tWill still create suffering in samsara. \t\t\tThose who follow your teaching, \t\t\tEven without having attained the essence of meditation, \t\t\tWill, like breaking the demon's net (or eyes), \t\t\tTurn back samsara. \t\t\tSo it is stated. \t\t\tThe fault in conduct is falling into the two extremes: clinging to gain and respect, not being satisfied with meager and few, but desiring excellent and many (181b). If one's own discipline is pure, and gross reification is broken by the view of selflessness, when practicing with slight austerity, if strong attachment does not arise, then even practicing with excellent and many is without fault. However, if one does not act in this way, the two sufferings of body and mind primarily occur among the Charvaka (nihilists/materialists) and Jains (naked ascetics). The Blessed One emphasized learning not to fall into the two extremes regarding the four necessities: clothing, food, dwelling, and medicine.
