Investigation, analysis, joy, bliss, one-pointedness of mind; Possessing five factors is the first Dhyana. Through those preparatory stages, the actual Dhyana is accomplished. Among them, investigation and analysis are factors of antidote; joy and bliss are factors of benefit; one-pointedness of mind is a factor of abiding. Possessing these five factors is the characteristic of the first Dhyana. In this, the actual Dhyana possessing both investigation and analysis is the ordinary actual Dhyana; being without investigation but with analysis is the special actual Dhyana. Second, the second Dhyana has two parts: 1. its preparatory stage; 2. its actual stage. First, Itself flawed, the second without flaw; Knowing characteristics, mental application, is the superior preparatory stage. Taking the special actual stage of the first Dhyana as the basis, by meditating in conjunction with Vipassana (insight) which examines with the six types of mental application such as clearly knowing the characteristics that “the first itself is flawed and the second is flawless and meritorious,” when calm abiding and insight arise in union, the attainment of the actual stage of the second Dhyana is the special preparatory stage. Second, [Explanation of the actual stage of the second Dhyana]: The actual stage possesses profound joy and so on, four factors. The actual stage of the second Dhyana possesses four factors: inner profound joy, and so on. Among them, inner profound joy is a factor of antidote; joy and bliss arisen from Samadhi are factors of benefit; Samadhi is a factor of abiding. The inner profound joy here refers to the three (factors) of mindfulness, introspection, and equanimity of one's own level. Furthermore, because inner investigation is completely abandoned, it is called inner profound joy. Third, the third Dhyana has two parts: 1. its preparatory stage; 2. its actual stage. First, (179b) Similarly, the preparatory stage, mental application, and insight, Gradually analyze. It means that in this way, the preparatory stage, mental abiding, and the special insight that examines with mental application, gradually analyze, thereby accomplishing the third and fourth Dhyanas. This is explained by generally including the fundamental verses of the third and fourth. For ease of understanding, if explained separately here: by examining with the six types of mental application the “special calm abiding of the second Dhyana, the flawed aspect of the second Dhyana, and the meritorious aspect of the third Dhyana,” and so on.

Through meditation combined with insight, when calm abiding and insight arise in union, one attains the actual [state of] the third meditative absorption (dhyāna). Second, [expounding on the actual state of the third meditative absorption]. The third [dhyāna] has five factors, such as mindfulness. The actual state of the third meditative absorption is endowed with five factors: mindfulness, clear comprehension, and equanimity are the three antidote factors; the bliss that has abandoned joy is the factor of qualities; concentration is the factor of abiding. Fourth, the fourth meditative absorption has two [parts]: 1. The access [state], and 2. Its actual state. First, through meditating, combined with insight, which is a discernment cultivated by six kinds of mental engagement, contemplating the special calm abiding of the third meditative absorption, the faults of the third meditative absorption, and the qualities of the fourth meditative absorption, when calm abiding and insight arise in union, one attains the actual [state of] the fourth meditative absorption. Second, its actual state. The fourth [dhyāna] has four factors and is free from eight faults. The actual state of the fourth meditative absorption is endowed with four factors: correct mindfulness and correct equanimity are the two antidote factors; the feeling of equanimity is the factor of qualities; concentration is the factor of abiding. Here, "correct mindfulness" means being thoroughly purified of the eight faults of meditative absorption. (179b) These are: the two fire-like faults of investigation and analysis related to the first meditative absorption; the two feelings of pleasure and suffering arising within the retinue of the sensory consciousness related to the second meditative absorption; the two mental pleasantness and unpleasantness arising within the retinue of the mental consciousness related to the third meditative absorption; and the two of exhalation and inhalation related to the fourth meditative absorption. It is thoroughly purified by these eight. Second, expounding on the meditative absorptions that give rise to results. Their respective actual states are small, medium, and great. In their respective abodes, ripening results, etc., are experienced. The results of these equipoises are as follows: from cultivating the small, medium, and great actual states of the first meditative absorption, one attains the three other abodes of the first meditative absorption, such as the Brahma-retinue heavens. Then, by cultivating the small, medium, and great actual states of the fourth meditative absorption, one attains the three other abodes of the fourth meditative absorption, such as the Cloudless heavens. Thus, by fully accomplishing the small, medium, and great actual states of each, one experiences ripening results, etc., in their respective abodes. Moreover, the forms that appear when born in those respective other abodes are...
