Therefore, if considered broadly, as explained by Arya Vimuktisena, everything encompassed by the upper two realms (Form Realm and Formless Realm) is referred to by the sound of Brahma. The path leading there, along with its retinue, is called the Brahma Vehicle. Two, the actual path has two parts: 1. Explaining the four Dhyanas of the Form Realm; and 2. Explaining the four Samapattis (absorptions) of the Formless Realm. First (regarding the four Dhyanas of the Form Realm), there are two: 1. A brief presentation; and 2. An extensive explanation. First (the brief presentation) is: The four Dhyanas of the Form Realm, each having two, cause and effect. There are the first, second, third, and fourth Dhyanas of the Form Realm. Each of these exists in the manner of a pair, comprising both a cause and an effect. Second, the extensive explanation has two parts: 1. The Dhyana of causal absorption; and 2. The Dhyana of resultant birth. First (regarding the Dhyana of causal absorption), there is: 1. From the first Dhyana up to the fourth Dhyana. First (regarding the first Dhyana), there are two: 1. Preparation (Upacara); and 2. Actual (Mūla) Dhyana. First, the preparation also has two: 1. Shamatha (calm abiding); and 2. Vipassana (special insight). First (Shamatha) is: The causal preparatory Shamatha Samadhi. Placing, continuous placing, replacing, close placing, Taming, pacifying, thoroughly pacifying, single-pointedness, By these nine mental abidings, body and mind are thoroughly purified. It is stated that in order to be able to enter the actual Dhyana and attain the fruit of its own stage, one must first cultivate the cause, which is the preparation (Upacara). Through the nine methods of calming the mind, one accomplishes Samadhi. Among these, "inwardly placing the mind" means: the mind is not distracted externally, but rather focuses on the image of the object of Samadhi, such as a body appearing as pure as gold, and so forth, by fixing the attention on the object. "Continuously placing" means: not only placing the mind on the object, but extending that continuity, so that the mind remains placed without interruption between preceding and succeeding moments. "Replacing" means: if the mind wanders away from the object due to forgetfulness, it is immediately brought back internally and placed again on the object. "Close placing" means: if the mind becomes distracted externally, it is not allowed to stray far, but is quickly brought back and placed internally on the object. "Taming" means: when the mental continuum is not thoroughly pacified by defilements such as covetousness (the Tibetan text is incomplete here).

From taming, pacifying. What is called “pacifying” refers to pacifying the waves of non-discriminating thoughts. What is called “thoroughly pacifying” refers to pacifying even subtle discriminating thoughts. What is called “single-pointed concentration” refers to concentrating single-pointedly with slight effort, without the mind and its object being separate. What is called “equipoise” refers to achieving equipoise in a naturally accomplished state without effort, having eliminated sinking and excitement. When samadhi is accomplished through the nine stages of dwelling the mind, the bliss of extreme physical and mental pliancy pervades. The samadhi that arises endowed with pliancy is posited as the worldly shamatha with characteristics; that which is not endowed with it is called the stage of conduct through conviction, which is conducive to shamatha. 2. Second part [Vipassana]: Having achieved, born from character, conviction, and isolation; by the six mental applications of delight, investigation, and final application; the result of final application is the mental application that accomplishes vipassana. The tranquil and coarse aspects are the common path of the world. What is called “after accomplishing shamatha with characteristics, through the mental application of perfectly knowing the characteristics” refers to roughly contemplating and meticulously investigating through a mixture of hearing and reflection that the desire realm has faults and the first dhyana has qualities. What is called “mental application born from conviction” refers to that itself arising as the nature of meditation-born. What is called “mental application born from isolation” refers to being isolated from the three great manifest afflictions of the desire realm. What is called “mental application of gathering joy” refers to also abandoning the three medium manifest afflictions of the desire realm. What is called “mental application of investigation” refers to also contemplating and investigating whether the three subtle afflictions of the desire realm are tainted in the mind-stream. What is called “mental application of the final application” refers to, by doing so, even extremely subtle afflictions of the desire realm being abandoned by the power of the antidote. Thus, through the six mental applications, the ultimate worldly vipassana, called “mental application of the result of the final application,” is accomplished. These are the realizations of the common path of the Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and the worldly vehicle, which views the defiled samadhi of lower realms as coarse, and views the undefiled dhyana of higher realms as tranquil. 2. Second part, explaining the actual practice: The actual practice...
