The unripened result. The minds of meditative attainments are the concordant cause results. The appearance as the enjoyments of objects is the dominant result. Second, the explanation of the four attainments of the formless realm is divided into two parts: 1) Brief presentation, 2) Detailed explanation. Part 1: The first is: Even in the four formless attainments, there are two: cause and effect. Thus it is said. Part 2: The second has two parts: 1) Causal attainment, and 2) Resultant birth. Part 1: The first is: Having attained the mind of the fourth dhyāna and not degenerated, Blocking form, contact, and visual appearance, space is boundless. Consciousness is boundless, there is nothing to grasp. Coarse perception is not present, subtle is not absent. The habitual attainment reaches the peak of existence. Among these, the four formless bases of existence (180na) are renowned: The first is: Upon having attained the mind of the fourth dhyāna and not degenerated, one blocks the three: form, contact, and visual appearance. Fully meditating that all phenomena are boundless like space, this is the attainment of the base of boundless space. The second is: Upon that, fully meditating that consciousness is also boundless, just as space is boundless, this is the attainment of the base of boundless consciousness. The third is: Seeing both of those as possessing characteristics, and fully meditating that there is nothing whatsoever to grasp, this is the attainment of the base of nothingness. The fourth is: Seeing all three of those as possessing characteristics, and fully meditating that there is neither coarse perception nor non-existence of subtle perception, this is the attainment of the base of neither perception nor non-perception. This is the ultimate path of the peak of existence. Part 2: The second, resultant birth, is: The result, samādhi, life span, etc., are especially excellent. The result of these attainments is: Although in the formless realm there are no other distinct abodes separated by coarse form, there are differences in terms of superior/inferior, long/short lifespan, higher/lower, etc. Mostly, it is also explained that the abodes, etc., are distinct. In any case, as one progresses higher and higher, the samādhi becomes more extensive and stable, and the blissful results of higher rebirths are especially excellent in terms of long lifespan, etc.

T3 Fundamental Third: Summary of Meaning. The four immeasurable qualities, such as clairvoyance, Are the supreme pursuit of external and Hinayana practitioners, And the preliminary steps for those entering the Buddha's path. Based on the actual foundations of the four dhyanas, the four immeasurables such as loving-kindness are generated, along with the mundane (180b) clairvoyances: divine eye, divine ear, knowing others' minds, remembering past lives, and knowing the transmigration of beings. These five are the most renowned special qualities of the upper two realms. Those who enter the path also first generate these concentrations and qualities, and then must accomplish the superior special qualities. Thus, clairvoyance, etc., are the basis of all qualities. In particular, by relying on the mind that is the actual foundation of the fourth dhyana, the equipoise of non-perception is attained; and by relying on the mind that is the actual foundation of the summit of existence, the equipoise of cessation, etc., are attained. Therefore, external ascetics and heterodox practitioners, as well as internal Hinayana Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, consider these to be the supreme objects of pursuit and accomplishment. Moreover, since these are also the preliminary practices for those who gradually enter the teachings of the Victorious One, one should learn to know them and diligently practice them. The chapter on the common branches of knowledge and the presentation of the mundane path. The commentary on the first chapter of the common branches of knowledge and the presentation of the mundane path. Second: The Chapter on the General Presentation of What is to be Known in Mahayana and Hinayana. NG2 The second chapter, the general presentation of what is to be known in Mahayana and Hinayana, has three parts: C1 Explaining the distinctions between external and internal philosophical schools. C2 Elaborating on the classification and inclusion of internal Buddhist systems. C3 Directly expounding the presentation of what is to be known. C1 First: Possessing the four seals, it counters the summit of existence, By abandoning the two extremes and accomplishing the truth of cessation, Superior to external views, this is the doctrine of ultimate good of the Victorious One. Regarding the distinctions between one's own and others' or external and internal philosophical schools, although there are many different traditions held by scholars of dharma, they cannot truly distinguish aspects of view, meditation, conduct, and result. Therefore, for anyone who has entered a philosophical school, whether their view accepts or does not accept the four seals of authoritative teaching, whether their meditation counters or does not counter the summit of existence, their conduct (181a)
