And, from the doctrine called 'Taught by the Sky Deities,' it is believed that if ants are pierced with golden needles in a golden vessel and killed, one will be liberated from cyclic existence. Some worldly people believe that reciting the names of the five sons of Pāṇḍu generates great merit (175a). Also in the land of Tibet, there are Bonpos who do not take refuge in the Three Jewels. Among these, especially the Causal Bon (རྒྱུའི་བོན་) that was prevalent in ancient times and is still practiced in some regions today, whose practitioners speak of violence as Dharma; in China, there is the doctrine of Gyam Shang, which asserts that all existence originated from a great golden tortoise; and those who hold views similar to the Sāṃkhya school, such as the philosophy of Confucius; and so forth—all these who hold views of eternalism or nihilism, who speak of violence as Dharma, and who are external to the Buddha's scriptures, yet desire liberation—all such practices must be carefully and thoroughly abandoned. Generally, the distinction between pure and impure doctrines is determined by whether they primarily teach the special wisdom that involves the skillful means of great compassion and wisdom, entering into the meaning of reality. One should know this. Second, the extensive explanation of the Vehicle of Higher Rebirth (mngon mtho'i theg pa) has three parts: 1. Brief presentation; 2. Extensive explanation; 3. Conclusion. First, this is: The Vehicle of Higher Rebirth has two: gods and Brahmās. Generally, what intelligent beings should strive to achieve are the stages of higher rebirth and definite goodness. Their definitions, respectively, are: Higher rebirth is temporary liberation from the suffering of the lower realms, which includes the happiness of gods and humans, gathered by karmic ripening and similar causes. Definite goodness is complete liberation from the general suffering of cyclic existence, which is nirvāṇa. These must also first be achieved by relying on the vehicle of higher rebirth, and then later by perfecting the path of definite goodness. From the Precious Garland (Ratnāvalī), it is said: First, the Dharma of higher rebirth, Later, definite goodness arises. Because having attained higher rebirth, Gradually, there is definite goodness. Therein, higher rebirth is happiness, Definite goodness is considered liberation. Thus it is said. Among these, the vehicle of higher rebirth that must first be achieved also has two types: the vehicle of gods and humans (175b) and the vehicle of Brahmā. Second, the extensive explanation has three parts: 1. Explanation of the common preliminaries.

2. Gods and 3. Brahma Vehicles are explained separately. 1. Firstly: Among all preliminaries, the three kinds of faith, Primarily by the four ways of acting with conviction in karma and so on, Although here the preliminary of the Abhyudaya-yana (vehicle of higher status) is directly taught, if supplemented by an incidental commentary, From the "Precious Garland": If its accomplishment is summarized, In short, it is faith and wisdom. Because one has faith, one relies on the Dharma, Because one possesses wisdom, one correctly understands. Of these two, the principal is wisdom, The preliminary is faith. As stated, the principal means of accomplishing both higher status and definite goodness (liberation/enlightenment) are faith and wisdom. There are three types of faith; primarily, being fully motivated by the faith of conviction in karma and its results, one engages in the adoption and rejection of virtue and non-virtue; and through non-conceptual wisdom regarding the three spheres (subject, object, action), one cuts the root of samsara. Therefore, the definitions of these two are respectively: without special reasons, desiring one's own side, hating the other side, being ignorant regarding adoption and rejection, and acting out of fear of rulers etc., turning away from the four wrong ways of engaging, by the four correct ways of engaging, one does not transgress the Dharma through adoption and rejection; even if one does not possess or possesses great compassion that makes others' welfare principal, the conduct of the three gates (body, speech, mind) is non-conceptual regarding the three spheres. Thus also from that very text (Ratnavali): Desire and hatred and fear and Delusion, whoever does not transgress the Dharma, That very one is called one with faith, Is indeed the supreme vessel for goodness. Whoever's actions of body, speech, and mind, Non-conceptually into three aspects, Knowing the benefit for self and others, Constantly acts, that is wisdom. Thus. Therefore (176 recto), if not fully motivated by faith, it will not even proceed as mere virtue; if not accompanied by wisdom realizing selflessness and being non-conceptual regarding the three spheres, it will never proceed onto the path of liberation; this very point should be generally known. Therefore, the preliminary for all who enter the vehicle of the path is the three types of faith, and even from that, primarily being fully motivated by the faith of conviction in karma and its results, accomplishing virtue by the four correct ways of engaging is the vehicle of higher status.
