Those wishing to comprehend the “essence of smoke” (or “nectar”) are grammarians, such as Bhartṛhari and others. The Vaiśeṣika (school), who infer arbitrary (categories) such as the twelve characteristics. Those who desire eight means of valid cognition are the Caraka school. Those who speak of ten knowable objects (or categories) are the Naked Ones (Jains). Although they possess some path to higher rebirth, Yet, because self-view obstructs liberation, they should be abandoned. The ninth (view) is: the twelve (topics) of valid cognition, namely general, particular, purpose, sequence, basis, general ascertainment, specific ascertainment, discussion, debate, Svatantrika (autonomous inference), and Prasaṅgika (consequence). Regarding valid cognition, also: (they) desire six (means of valid cognition), namely direct perception (Pratyakṣa), inference (Anumāna), verbal testimony (Śabda), comparison (Upamāna), postulation (Arthāpatti), comprehension by implication, and non-existence (Anupalabdhi). The Vaiśeṣika school declares that the self is the cause of the aggregates, permanents arise from power, defilements are the nature of the mind, and liberation is attained by their exhaustion. The tenth (view) is: the means of valid cognition are as mentioned above. The Caraka school, regarding inference, divides it into three types of inference: past, future, and present. Most of their knowable objects, etc., measured by eight (pramāṇas), are similar to those of the Cārvāka school. The eleventh (view) is: Nine categories of word-meaning as knowable objects, plus the self, making ten. Among these, the three means of knowing are direct perception (Pratyakṣa), inference (Anumāna), and verbal testimony (Āgama). They also posit nine types of living beings (Jīva), (174ན) since earth and other elements are living beings, the Naked Ones (Jains) declare that building pleasure gardens, etc., is a cause of sin. Moreover, they consider the supreme victorious rishis as deities and follow twenty-five teachers who exhaust the “best of herds” (Khāyu-mchog) and “lords of vessels” (Snod-kyi-rje), etc. They desire to destroy the knots of the mind by tormenting the body with ascetic practices. And regarding this, it is said that there are about three hundred and sixty-three wrong observances (vratas), such as “those with three staffs” (tri-daṇḍa) and “leaf-clad ones,” etc. The objects of knowledge measured by three means of valid cognition—the three times, six substances, nine categories of word-meaning, and nine types of living beings, etc.—are the basis (gzhi) of the three: basis, path, and fruit. Among these, the three times are past, etc. (i.e., past, present, and future). The six substances are: soul (jīva), person (pudgala), time, space, merit (puṇya), and demerit (pāpa). Specifically, the nine categories of word-meaning and nine types of living beings are declared by the victorious Rishi (Mahāvīra): Soul (Jīva), Inflow (Āsrava), Stoppage (Saṃvara), and Definite delight (Nirjarā), Bondage (Bandha), Karma (Action), Demerit (Pāpa), Merit (Puṇya), Liberation (Mokṣa), are These are desired as the nine categories of word-meaning. The soul (jīva) is the nine classes of living beings: Earth, water, plants, fire, and wind, Worms (two-sensed), ants (three-sensed), bees (four-sensed), humans (five-sensed), Possessing one sense up to five senses.

As stated. The fivefold precepts, ascetic practices, and wisdom, the thirteen conducts, and various methods of asceticism that exhaust karma, these constitute the path. When karma is exhausted, it is said that above the three realms, there is a place called "World Assembly." This liberation, which is "existent" because it has life and "non-existent" because it is free from cyclic existence, is like an unfurled parasol, white, fragrant, and delightful, with a measure of forty-five hundred thousand yojanas, this is the fruition. Each of these (systems) has its own tenets regarding the ground, path, and fruition, the reasoning of the knowable and the knowing, and scriptures that refute internal (Buddhist) paths, such as not accepting omniscience (174b). Although there are numerous views and modes of conduct, yet: From the Pramāṇavārttika: Those who proclaim the Vedas as authoritative and contradictory, Those whose bodies desire Dharma and are arrogant in their reasoning, Those who endure suffering to destroy sin, These are the five signs of a fool's corrupted wisdom. As stated. Among these, those who believe in a future life and practice the acceptance and rejection of virtuous and non-virtuous actions may have a path to higher rebirth, but since all of them similarly cling to a self-view, there is no difference in their obstruction of the path to liberation. Therefore, those who have entered the gate of the insiders (Buddhists) should abandon them from afar. Thirdly, incidentally, other specific objects of abandonment, such as "barbarians," are explained: Barbarians who proclaim violence as Dharma, and In Tibet and China and elsewhere, the scriptures state, All those who have become outsiders (non-Buddhists) should be abandoned from afar. Furthermore, there are those who hold wrong views towards the Three Jewels, and so on, who are merely similar to Tirthikas (non-Buddhist philosophers), belonging neither to the internal (Buddhist) nor external paths, and are even more degenerate than Tirthikas—those who proclaim violence as Dharma. These are the followers of the deity Rahmana from the land of Mkha'i yul in western India, known as Mongols or Tajiks. They consume the flesh of animals whose throats are cut with a curved knife consecrated by the mantra of Bishimalla (Vishnu), but do not eat the flesh of animals that died naturally; they only drink beverages made from crow's eggs, and so forth, holding such ascetic practices. Nowadays, this very system is prevalent even in the holy land (India), and it is a philosophical system called "the doctrine that liberates from cyclic existence," yet in remote areas, they consider the killing of many sentient beings as a method for liberation.
