For their appearance, the sun and moon, a pair; For bringing forth the static and the mobile, the five elements; To cause them to ripen, an offering (172b). Manifesting eight clear forms: subtle, light, worthy of worship, becoming a master, having control, going anywhere, transforming at will, dwelling in joy; thus endowed with eight qualities. Worldly people and others, without self-mastery, worship Ishvara (the powerful lord), and by relying on sexual union, attain wisdom that transcends the signified, thereby achieving liberation. These three, namely the Vaisheshika and others, are all sub-schools within the Ishvara Darshana (school of thought that advocates for the supreme lord). From the ten incarnations, etc., the Pervasive School (Vaishnavas); Those who acknowledge the Vedas as valid, the Brahma School; For the underground-born beings, the secret school of one taste; All phenomena are the nature of sound, the Grammarian School. Fifth, regarding the Pervasive School (Vaishnavas): The teachers of the Naked Ascetics (Nirgranthas), such as Gzhon nu ma len, assert that the fortunate deity of wealth (Nor lha, often associated with Vishnu) is omniscient, all-seeing, the creator of all beings, and the bestower of liberation, and so forth. He himself also said thus: I am also fire, water, and wind. I am also the lord of food, drink, and beings. I dwell in the body of a Brahmin. I am the enjoyer, and I am also the giver. Thus, possessing great manifest pride. His followers hold the histories of his ten incarnations and maintain views of permanence and annihilation. Specifically, he transformed into a great fish, and in a former age, by force of circumstance, retrieved the four Vedas that had sunk into the ocean; he transformed into a tortoise, supporting the world and dwelling upon it; in the form of a wild boar, he subdued Brahma's world; he transformed into a half-man, half-lion (Narasimha), and with his claws, killed the Asura king Hiranyakashipu who had a golden throne; he transformed into a dwarf (Vamana), and by begging three paces of land from the powerful Asura sacrificer Bali, deceived him and cast him down into the netherworld; he transformed into Rama (Parashurama), the son of the Rishi Jamadagni, and killed Prince Kshatriyas (Srid sgrub) and others, thereby eliminating the royal lineage; he transformed into Rama, the son of King Dasharatha, and when his wife was abducted by the ten-necked Rakshasa of Lanka (modern Sri Lanka) Ravana, he entrusted his life (or a mission) to the monkey Hanuman, and subdued the Rakshasa; he transformed into the dark one (Krishna), and in the time of strife, beings...

As it is stated, having accomplished this purpose, manifesting as Shakyamuni Buddha, in order to purify the past sins of killing the Kshatriya lineage, he protected sentient beings. It is said that when the noble Brahmin son named Kalki appears in the future, and after subduing many sentient beings, the age will be reversed (the end of the kalpa). At the time of the destruction of the kalpa, the sages (rishis) are believed to reside in his belly. The tenet of this school is that the mind-nature is eternal, free from birth and cessation, neither existent nor non-existent, and the supreme self is considered to be the "Son of Nara-hari" (Vishnu), thus they are eternalists. When Vishnu destroys at the time of the great conflict (pralaya), many verses advocating nihilism are spoken. Similar to how the *Madhyamakalankara* states that Vishnu's view is partially consistent with Madhyamaka, there are also those who propound nihilism. Their meditation includes the six-limbed yoga, and so on. Furthermore, the Seizers, the Inquirers, the Vedics, the Grammarians, the Carakas, the Secretists, and so forth, are also classifications within the Vaishnava (Vishnu) tradition. Sixth, the Vedic Brahmanists. Because recollection is uncreated, they affirm permanence and valid cognition (pramana). These are the Brahmanists. They assert that those who die in battle are reborn in higher realms, that bathing in the Ganges and so forth purifies sins, that Brahma creates all outer and inner worlds, and that sages and Brahmins are also the sons of Brahma. Seventh, the Secretists of the Culminating Veda. They assert that beneath the mandala of darkness underground, there exists a being called the "Immortal Nectar Man," a supreme, permanent Self-consciousness whose essence is singularly unified, like space (173b). From its manifestations, the world of vessels (outer world) and beings (inner world) arise. When the Veda reaches its culmination, all phenomena are perceived as illusory. At that time, through the habituation of meditating on the creator-being, darkness is dispelled, it is seen as golden in color, and by becoming one taste, liberation is attained. Eighth, direct perception and inference appear but are not definite. The foundation of all knowledge is the treatise on sound (grammar), and the Vedas are the valid cognition of meaning. All existents are of the nature of sound. The ultimate culmination of all sound and meaning is the syllable Om, which is free from birth, cessation, abiding, and separation, without direction or parts – it is the Brahma of sound. Although it is eternal and unchanging, due to ignorance it is obscured and appears as forms. If the appearing aspect is reversed, it is the formless Brahma of sound.
