For those who uphold (this). (161b) One should meticulously examine the ways in which the fundamental and branching sounds manifest within Dharma and time, and what is stated in the *Kālachakra Tantra* regarding the prophecy of good and bad results. One should also primarily rely on the manifestation of sounds in the meaning of the *Sūtra of Victorious War*, and through the wheels of essential pith instructions, revealing hidden matters of acceptance and rejection directly. Furthermore, one should learn other minor calculations such as the “source calculation” or “black calculation,” which prophesy good and ill through the five elements to be calculated, and the two branches of knowledge: the fundamental knowledge of the calculator's nature, and the two branches of knowledge encompassed by the four hidden treasuries of self-nature of the elements, the appearing object, the decisive mind, and the grasping consciousness, which are the illusory appearances of ignorance. Chapter 2: On Poetics, there are two: 1. Body (Form); 2. Ornamentation. 1. The first is: The intended meaning of poetry, its body (form) comprises verse, prose, and mixed forms. Free verse, classified verse, treasury verse, and compiled verse are bound by chapters. Verse has four lines; prose is narration and discourse. Mixed forms are primary and secondary dramas, and champu. Likewise, as stated in the sutras: “To clarify the sacred Dharma, poetry should be composed. The Three Jewels should be praised. From this, unsurpassed enlightenment will be attained.” And so on. Among the three excellent deeds of the wise, the quality of composition (whether good or bad) depends on the knowledge or ignorance of poetry. Therefore, its main meaning lies in the two aspects: the body (form) and ornamentation. The first one is: The body (form), for the time being, is the intended meaning, divided into meanings, a garland of words. As stated: The meaning that a poet wishes to express or contemplates is the body of the poetry. After determining the meaning, then skillfully arranging the words, this is said to be distinguished by the desired meaning. (162a) This body (form) also exists in three types: verse (with seven or nine syllables per line, etc.), undivided prose, and mixed forms combining these. If divided by the manner of composing verse or by type, there are four: free verse, classified verse, treasury verse, and compiled verse. Respectively, they are: expressing a single meaning independently and completely within one verse; gathering many stanzas for a single topic and clarifying it with one verb; and having various punctuation marks and verbs, with an indefinite number of stanzas.

Accumulated like an inexhaustible treasury, and having many verses and verbs for a single expressed word-meaning, these, being bound by numerous chapters, sections, or cantos called "Sarga," are termed "great poetry." As for verse, although the *Abhidharmasamuccaya* states that it can have one to six lines, in the tradition of poets, it is exclusively of four lines. Although prose has two names, *brjod pa* (narration) and *gtam* (tale), Acarya Dandi considers these two to be one in meaning. Pandita Rigjed Gyatsho (Veda-ocean) holds: the definition of *brjod pa* (narration) is prose poetry that narrates types not drawn from past tales; and the definition of *gtam* (tale) is prose poetry that mostly narrates, composed based on past tales. In *Kavyadarsha* (Mirror of Poetry) it is also stated: "Or derived from past tales, or based on the other excellent one." Many ancient scholars say this is good, as it is consistent (with what was mentioned before). Mixed style (Spel ma) also has two types: primary and secondary. The first is theatrical (Zlos gar), possessing the nature of verse, prose, and mixed style, complete with four types of language. The second is that which is based on any type of language (folio 162b) and is merely a mixture of verse and prose, known as Campu. Furthermore, if divided by means of expression, there are four types: Sanskrit, Prakrit, Apabhramsa, and Mixed. D2, Second, Ornaments are: Ten qualities, whether concordant or not, that make phrases beautiful, Common semantic ornaments, sound (ornament) and hidden words, Composition free from faults, makes it an ornament in the world. As it appears in the *Kavyadarsha* treatise: "Those dharmas that make poetry beautiful are supremely called ornaments." Just as a man's body is adorned by necklaces, armlets, and so forth, so too the body of poetry is made beautiful by semantic ornaments such as simile (Sbyar ba), therefore, such phrase structures are called "ornaments." Again, in Dandi's treatise: The distinct styles of the East and South, Simile, supreme clarity, equality, Sweetness and extreme youthfulness, Clarity of meaning and extensiveness, Majesty and beauty, Samadhi (Ting nge 'dzin), These ten qualities.
