The fourth is old age and death; again, the twenty-fifth, from ignorance to the sixth old age and death; the seventh, from ignorance to the eighteenth old age and death; the nineteenth, from ignorance to the old age and death in the empty space. In short, in the empty space, contact and old age and death occur alternately. When there is the limb of contact, in the center of grasping the limb of contact, Rahu (Sgra gcan) moves and will seize the sun and moon. The courses of the sun, moon, and wind bring about sidereal days, lunar days, and solar days; Three times, four intervals, eight periods, and time conjunctions are: Twelve muhurtas, thirty breaths, twenty-one thousand One thousand three hundred ghatikas, three thousand Six hundred hours, sixty ghatikas by which the globe revolves. Based on the three courses of the sun, moon, and wind (planets), sidereal days, lunar days, and solar days are formed; the former (sidereal day) is long, (160b) the middle one (lunar day) is short, and the latter (solar day) is between the two, as has been explained in detail above. Moreover, the main establishment of time concepts such as years and months is based on the sun's course: In one solar day, there are twelve time conjunctions (dus sbyor), where four conjunctions make one time (dus), thus there are three times; three conjunctions make one interval (thun mtshams), thus there are four intervals; two and a half conjunctions make one period (thun tshod), thus there are eight periods; five dbyu gu (units) make one time conjunction, thus there are twelve time conjunctions; two hours make one muhurta, thus there are thirty muhurtas; twenty-one thousand six hundred breaths; six breaths make one ghatika, thus there are three hundred sixty ghatikas; sixty ghatikas, being made into sixty hours (chu tshod), daily cause the globe to revolve; other planets also follow their course in the world, producing good and bad results. Here, incidentally, also the manner of commencing years and months. In the 'Sun Heart Sutra' (Mdo sde nyi ma'i snying po), it states: The constellation I speak of is Pleiades (Smin drug), On the full moon day, the new moon appears. Known as the end of the autumn month (i.e., beginning of winter), I shall declare it as the beginning of the year. Thus, following the order of placing the year first, since Pleiades (Smin drug) is the first of the constellations, the month of Pleiades is stated to be the beginning of the year. However, the worldly renown holds spring to be the beginning of the year, concerning this, from the Vinaya and Abhidharma traditions...

These two, and also the situation of making the month of Vishakha (tail constellation) the beginning of the year, also occurs. Although Chinese calendrists take the first lunar month, the Tiger month, as the beginning of spring and set it as the beginning of the year, in this Kalachakra, there are three types of year beginnings: the year beginning based on the formation of the world, the year beginning primarily based on the solar mansion, and the year beginning primarily based on the Aries mansion. Regarding the first of these: it begins from the middle summer month of Karkata (Cancer), because not long after the world was formed, when there were no autumn, spring, sun, moon, etc., the sun enjoyed (light) from the beginning of the Karkata mansion, the fourth of the twenty-seven constellations, thus it is said that the first season was summer. The second is the time when the sun enters the Aries mansion, because planets, constellations, and times all follow the sun, and Aries is the first of its mansions. The third is to take the first bright day of the dark month as the beginning of the year, because this is the month spoken of in the Kalachakra. This, and also worldly people and externalists, prioritize the waxing fortnight (bright half of the month). However, in the *Abhidharmakosha* commentary, it is stated that 'all months prioritize the waning fortnight (dark half).' Although initially the effort (of discipline) seems difficult, it eventually expands. Many enlightened ones (Buddhas) prioritize the waning fortnight according to the dharma that grows extensively in the end. Therefore, in the tantra commentaries, although mostly the waning fortnight is prioritized, sometimes, due to necessity, the waxing fortnight is also mentioned as prioritized. Furthermore, in the Root Tantra, it is also well-known that 'to introduce externalists, in the waning fortnight priority and in the condensed tantra, the waxing fortnight priority is stated.' Fourth [Explanation of How to Calculate]: The five limbs performing planetary, date, and stellar conjunctions, The five planets, Rahu, and Tatkala (instantaneous time) conjunction methods should be examined. The fruit of prophecy, and other subtle calculations should also be learned. Therefore, having thoroughly understood the basis for calculation and the key points of calculation, the method for calculating the certainty of each day, etc., is as follows: The seven planets such as the sun; the twenty-seven lunar mansions such as Vishakha or the nakshatras (lunar constellations) of the moon; the ecliptic path traversed by the sun; the twenty-seven four conjunctions such as elimination; the seven types of transference (movement) and the four types of constant (movement)—how these five limbs appear; and the three fierce planets and two peaceful planets, these five planets, how they move in the realm of constellations with four types of motion; where the head and tail of Rahu (eclipse node) are active; and the conjunction of Tatkala (instantaneous time).
