the foundation. The reasoning of numbers that are interdependent is the method of calculation or the means of calculation. \t\t\t2. Next is [the explanation of the inner certainty]: \t\t\tFrom the breath of the central channel, the steps of the planets arise; \t\t\tAt the end of the four seasons, they enter emptiness; \t\t\tAgain, through realization (158b), the certainty of time appears. \t\t\tThe breath of the central channel is the wind of wisdom. Just as other channels arise and manifest by relying on the central channel, the karmic winds, which are the essence of the five elements, arise or circulate by relying on the wisdom-wind. By relying on the left channel (kyangma), the apprehended object (yul) of the nature of courage (snying stobs) is generated, forming parts in the order of space, wind, fire, water, earth, by which the five peaceful planets (zhi gza') circulate. By relying on the right channel (roma), the grasping self-conception (bdag rtog) is primarily generated, which is the essence of particles, in the order of earth, water, fire, wind, space, by which the five fierce planets (drag gza') circulate. Therefore, in the external world, the slow and fast movements of the planets, etc., arise according to the number of fire and wind. \t\t\tThe number of years, etc., for these planets to enter emptiness at the end of the four seasons is as mentioned above. When applied to the inner body, taking an individual in their prime, not afflicted by illness, as an example, by relying on the left channel, from the left nostril, first, the elements are generated in the order of space, wind, fire, water, earth. Each mandala (cycle) consists of three hundred and sixty (breaths), and five mandalas circulate. Then, by relying on the right channel, to the right, the elements are absorbed in the reverse order of earth, water, fire, wind, space, and five mandalas circulate. That is, each mandala or minor transition ('pho chung) has three hundred and sixty (breaths), and the completion of five mandalas is a major transition ('pho chen), which involves twenty-one thousand eight hundred breaths. Thus, when these two actions of generation and absorption are completed, between the two major transitions, one enters the central channel inwardly. This signifies the meaning that when the processes of the world's formation and dissolution are complete, it abides in emptiness; or when the mandalas of the planets are complete, they enter emptiness; and living beings, in the state of birth and death, enter the clear light of their true nature, and so forth. \t\t\tIn this manner, from the right (channel), the six major transitions of the unequal (female, lunar) astrological houses such as Aries (Sheep) occur, and from the left (channel), the six major transitions of the equal (male, solar) astrological houses such as Taurus (Ox) occur. These twelve transitions of the time conjunctions (dus sbyor) involve twenty-one thousand breaths.

Reaching six hundred, one abides in one day of one's own breath. Therefore, internally, after the creation, aggregation, and dissolution of the elements are complete in the two great transformations, to demonstrate the meaning of entering the emptiness of the central channel, and for the purpose of guiding non-Buddhists, it is posited that there is a lord named 'Lord of Power' (Nüpa'i Mingchen) whose every breath takes one thousand two hundred years. When the two great transformations of its breath-count are complete, externally one great kalpa (time period) is completed, and at the boundary of that transformation, one enters the central channel, and it is taught that externally the planets also enter emptiness. Regarding the entry into emptiness, the Tshur tradition takes the self-calculation taught in the tantras literally, whereas the Phug tradition considers it to be a hidden calculation of the Tirthikas due to its imprecision, and thus not to be taken literally, leading them to establish new detailed calculations for their own philosophical systems. Furthermore, just as the transformation of wind (prana) arises due to the power of conceptualization of all sentient beings, externally too, the definite times (seasons) appear sequentially. At the end of each of the four seasons, at the end of the Pisces constellation of the 'Sky Emptiness' in the Dbo month of the Fire Tiger year, the pure activity of the planets is termed as entering emptiness. Again, from the first day of the Nag month of a Rab byung year, the perpetual activity of all years, months, planets, and stars (constellations) newly arises. Three. [Explanation of the Basis of External Calculation] is: As it is internally, so it appears externally. The traversed zodiac houses and stars, the traversing planets arise. The sun traverses the houses, the four seasons revolve to the right. The starry zodiac sphere, moved by wind, each day and night. The planets revolving to the right, by their own speed, move through their realms. Just as the mode of abiding of the internal Vajra Body manifests externally, firstly, upon the sphere of the traversed realm (page 159b), the twelve zodiac houses and twenty-eight constellations are established. Above them, the ten traversing planets arise. In the sky, the sun moves counter-clockwise through the twelve houses, and on earth, by karma, the four seasons transform and move in a clockwise manner, divided into twelve sections (houses), thus revolving. Thus, the zodiac houses of the constellations and the spheres, based on the movement of wind, revolve to the right each day and night; while the planets, by their own speeds, move through the realms of the starry zodiac houses.
