Through the four definite certainties, the signs of the body's impermanence are established; with many subdivisions and seven categories, one should become skilled in the nature of the body that is to be cared for. \t\t\tF2 Second [Disease]. \t\t\tFor disease, the three poisons and three faults (doshas) are proximal and distal causes. \t\t\tThe sense bases (ayatana), accumulation, exacerbation, and precipitating conditions are the generating causes. \t\t\tThe characteristics upon entering the six (pathological) pathways are increase, decrease, and disturbance. \t\t\tThey are differentiated by cause, basis, and form. \t\t\tRegarding the disease to be cared for: The remote cause is the three poisons arising from ignorance, and the proximal cause is the three faults (doshas) generated by them; these are the causes of disease. Deficient, excessive, or wrong conduct regarding time, senses, and activities are the conditions for generation. Through cause, nature, and time, the four accumulations and three exacerbations occur, and these are the conditions for accumulation and exacerbation. Common and specific precipitating conditions constitute the three generating conditions for disease. The three faults, propelled by the four propelling conditions to their respective spheres, enter the six pathways of entry and settle in their own locations—this is the manner of disease entry. After entering, the three internal bodily constituents and waste products (or the three humors) either increase beyond their normal level, decrease, or mutually disturb each other; these three are the characteristics of disease. Past karma, faults of this life, and those arising from the mixture of these two are the three divisions of causes. Male, female, child, elderly, and universally pervasive/common are the five divisions of bases (for disease). Among the latter, the primary faults are differentiated by type and location, forming three divisions. With subdivisions, the twenty-five afflictions are differentiated into countless types based on single, combined, or mixed forms; these are the divisions of disease. Thus, through five categories, one should thoroughly understand the characteristics of the disease to be treated. \t\t\tP2 Second, explaining the method of treatment. \t\t\tConduct: daily conduct, seasonal conduct, and temporary conduct. \t\t\tDiet: moderation of food, and eating in appropriate measure. \t\t\tMedicine: taste, potency, post-digestive taste, and methods of application. \t\t\tGentle, harsh, and strong therapies, together with their instruments. \t\t\tFirstly, regarding the conduct (activities) that are most important among the remedies for treating disease: \t\t\tThat which is continually performed by ordinary long-lived beings and noble ones. \t\t\tSeasonal conduct, which involves employing remedies for accumulation and exacerbation during the six seasons. \t\t\tTemporary conduct, which prevents disease from arising and pacifies existing disease; these are the three. \t\t\tRegarding sustenance, which is food: \t\t\tThe manner or type of food to be eaten and drink to be drunk...

To be known: one should avoid what is incompatible with the body, and eat appropriate amounts of food—these are three. In terms of compounded medicines, seventeen qualities arise from the six tastes and eight potencies, along with three post-digestive effects. These are applied as antidotes to the causes of illness. There are fifty-seven compounded preparations and six single preparations, totaling sixty-three, which are respectively applied as antidotes to the seventy-four types of increase and decrease (disorders). One should be skilled in the methods of applying the two types of potent application—pacifying and purging—as general antidotes for all kinds of illnesses. As for instrumental therapies, there are gentle therapies like fumigation, applying ointments; rough therapies like bloodletting, cauterization, and piercing; and fierce therapies like cutting, incising, pulling, and extracting—four types. The instruments for these include fourteen types such as needle heads for investigating pain. For extracting foreign bodies, there are six types of forceps such as lion's mouth forceps. For cutting flesh and letting blood, there are six types of drainage instruments such as bird's feather-like tools. For inserting and draining, there are nine types of probes such as tube-probes and pen-probes. There are also various minor instruments like those for intussusception and funnel-shaped tools. Through these, one should diligently and compassionately treat various kinds of transformed diseases. Third, [Explanation of Treatment Methods] has two parts: 1. Remaining without illness and living; 2. Curing the sick. First, that is: To abide happily without illness, prolonging life and delaying the illnesses of old age. The supreme method for a normal, un-transformed, illness-free body to remain without sickness and to live long and happily is to learn to abandon the causes and conditions of illness. When many years and months have passed, and the strength of the bodily constituents declines, and one grows old from the core, nearing the end of life, one should enhance strength and prolong life through revitalizing preparations. Second, [Curing the Sick] involves: For illnesses, causes, characteristics, benefits, and harms, one should rely. Deceit, faults, and the four extremes of acceptance and rejection, by these one should examine. General, specific, and particular methods, by these one should cure. Common and special treatment methods, one should possess. At the beginning of treating illnesses, one must be skilled in identifying the symptoms. The three aspects to directly observe faults are: precipitating causes, characteristic symptoms, and demonstrated beneficial/harmful habits. One should examine strategically to avoid gaining a reputation for incompetence due to deceit or fault. Not all illnesses are curable, nor do all illnesses lead to death; thus, there are easy-to-treat and difficult-to-treat ones, and
