What is treatable and what should be abandoned, meaning to examine through the four limits of abandonment and acceptance. After understanding, how to treat. There are two aspects: the ways of treatment and the means of treatment. The first has three: the general way of treatment is to pacify when the three humors accumulate, to purge when they flare up, and to prevent disturbance when they are pacified. The specific way of treatment is to treat conditions involving undigested substances, single conditions, and dependent conditions as appropriate. For those with misunderstanding and doubt, apply probing measures. After gaining definite recognition/diagnosis, actually apply medical treatment. For that which does not respond to the antidote, guide it into the path of illness (to clarify its nature). For previously treated conditions that are deficient, excessive, or mistaken, change the antidote. For very strong diseases, apply the antidote to the root (of the disease). For minor types of diseases, increase the antidote proportionately. For diseases of a single humor, apply an antidote that does not harm others. For concomitant and compound diseases, treat their accumulation to bring balance. In all cases, the treated and the treating should be appropriate and without error. Thus, diseases should be healed by these nine special methods of treatment. And one should examine common treatment sites, etc., and the two methods for reducing excess, etc. Specifically, for heat, cool; (157b) for cold, warm; for wind, use oily and warm (treatments), etc. One should possess these methods for treating the three humors individually. Chapter 4: [The Physician] A physician, possessing the six excellent causes, skilled in action, Benefits oneself and others, immediately and in the long term, enjoying happy and auspicious results. The definition of a physician who performs the work of healing is possessing six causes: possessing great intelligence, a firm mind, and a discerning mind, thus endowed with wisdom. Possessing loving-kindness and compassion, having a pure intention. Understanding the six mental applications, the two graspable objects, and the three knowledges, thus possessing commitments/vows. Having skillful hands, pleasant speech, and clear understanding, thus possessing a good demeanor. Diligent in work, without laziness in self-benefit (study and practice) and in other's benefit (medical treatment). Possessing the qualities of a noble person, having good common conduct, etc., skilled in human dharma (ethics). Furthermore, abandoning the twelve inferior faults such as lacking lineage and having little experience, and possessing excellent qualities. Skilled in the common work of the three gates (body, speech, mind) of medical treatment, and especially skilled in the work of view, meditation, and conduct. Such qualities, as explained, by possessing measure and connection, oneself and others will both be happy immediately and in the long term...

One will experience the fruits of virtue. 2. Second, the explanation of the minor sciences has two parts: 1. Introduction, and 2. Actual Content. 1. First, the introduction: From the five renowned minor sciences, Although there are various views regarding these five renowned minor sciences, As stated in the 'Abhidharma Tantra': Bodhisattvas, in order to gather sentient beings, should study treatises on poetics for others, and treatises on homonyms (one word, multiple meanings), and treatises on synonyms (one meaning, multiple words), and treatises on prosody (158b), which compose verses by changing and expanding light and heavy syllables, and treatises on dramaturgy, which delight beings by including summaries, humor, and translations into various other languages, and treatises on astrology/computation, which measure by the science of numbers and display wonders. All these should be studied, because that Bodhisattva desires to attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. As stated, it appears that this (view) was later commonly accepted, hence this is the introduction. 2. Second, [the actual content] has five parts: 1. Astrology/Computation, 2. Poetics, 3. Prosody, 4. Lexicography (Synonymics), 5. Dramaturgy. 1. The first (Astrology/Computation) has four parts: 1. General Meaning, 2. Inner Certainty, 3. External Basis of Calculation, 4. Explanation of How to Calculate. 1. The first (General Meaning) is: Astrology/Computation, which indicates adoption and rejection in conventional truth, The emptiness itself is the basis for calculating coarse appearances. The science of numbers of dependent origination is the method of calculation. Its purpose is to instruct correctly on what to adopt and what to reject, by not being ignorant of conventional numbers and circumstances. This renowned astrology/computation, possessing that purpose, has two systems: outer and inner. Here, following what is taught in the King of Tantras is of utmost necessity and utility. Therefore, it is important to first understand the inner certainty. That very reality of emptiness, free from elaboration, due to the corrupting influence of ignorance, which causes delusion, leads to dualistic phenomena such as object and subject or outer and inner, and triple phenomena symbolized by channels, winds, and drops, or sun, moon, and Rahu, and other innumerable coarse appearances that are superimposed – these mere appearances are what ordinary beings calculate...
