Secondly, verbal crafts also have two types: N1. Superior, and N2. Ordinary. N1. The first is: The supreme verbal craft is debate, (149b) explanation, and composition. Among all verbal crafts, the supreme ones are: debate that refutes the wrong views of others; explanation that guides sentient beings; and composition that clarifies the teachings (Dharma), these three. These also need to be free from their respective faults and endowed with all virtues, so as not to be mere reflections. Innate music, drawing, bending, turning, and sinking/filling. Trees, flowers, vines, rivers, minds/wisdom. With the three key points as primary, abandon the six faults and five causes. The six great ones, etc., are to be adopted as appropriate. As explained thus, the innate music, or the distinctions of melody, endowed with purpose, rare and supreme... (text ends here) (This text segment does not contain any seed syllables or mantras.)

From the Vinaya on Chanting Offerings, initially the Teacher (Buddha) prohibited singing, dancing, and musical performances. Consequently, recitations such as praise verses to the Buddhas became chaotic and indistinct. Because of this, heretics and others ridiculed them, and householders lost faith. Therefore, the householder Anathapindika requested the Teacher (Buddha). At that time, the Teacher (Buddha) subsequently permitted the use of vocal melodies for the purpose of offering to the Triple Gem. When they again inquired, not knowing how to perform these vocal melodies, (Buddha) stated that they should be recited with a melody similar to how Brahmins recite the Vedas. Regarding mantras, the yoga melodies that flourished during the time of the great translator Rinchen Zangpo, and the loud and soft melodies of the Protector siblings (Mahakala and Lhamo), as well as the unbroken oral traditions of the Nyingma Vidyadharas, these are the earliest. Later, those (melodies) renowned in various schools of thought also exclusively possess necessary (qualities) (150na). The general points of study, the teachers who instruct, the students who are the objects of study, the methods of learning, faults and good qualities, etc., are not mentioned here. The essence of the taught melodies comprises four types of vocalizations, twelve branches, and countless permutations. Among these, each of the four vocalizations that leads (the melody) also has five (aspects): led by the straight sound of 'Ah', the rising sound of 'Eh', the curving sound of 'Ih', the praising sound of 'Oh', and the lowering sound of 'Uh'. For the curved 'khug' sound, there are 'rkyang pa' (single) and 'brtsegs pa' (stacked). For the 'nyis ’gyur' (double variation) modulation, there are three types: 'mgrin bsgyur' (throat modulation), 'lce bsgyur' (tongue modulation), and 'sna ldan bsgyur' (nasal modulation). For the 'ltengs' (hovering/oscillating) sound, there are two types: long and short 'ltengs'. These, as Sakya Pandita stated: “The main point of offering melodies is variation; The main point of singing is leading. In narratives, the variations are short; In subsequent recitations, both variation and leading are short. Although generally all can be applied to all, Here, leading is seen as the primary focus.” For ease of understanding, to illustrate with examples: the melody where leading is primary is like a wish-fulfilling tree; the melody where curving is primary is like a flowering creeper; the melody where hovering is primary is like a river flowing slowly with a weak current in the middle; and the melody with many intricate variations is described as the moon in the ocean. All of these depend on the key points of confidence/mastery, the key points of timing, and the key points of practice/training.
