“ཅ”(ca)、“ཆ”(cha)、“ར”(ra)、“འ”(a)过长是缺点。

The Sixteen Son-Dharmas are as follows: Three types of *naro* (na-ro, vowel 'o' sign) that are severed in two, smile-like, without high or low. Two types of *drengbu* (dreng-bu, vowel 'e' sign) that slope diagonally downwards, with upper and lower halves divided. Three types of *gigu* (gi-gu, vowel 'i' sign) that are round, coiled, and swift. Three types of spear-like vertical strokes (*mdung-tsugs*) that have a lower appendage, are connected, and are extended. Three types of *zhabskyu* (zhabs-kyu, vowel 'u' sign) that are connected. Two types of *rata* (ra-ta stroke) that are linked like a horse, not piled up. Three types of *yatags* (ya-btags, subscript 'ya') that are swift, level, elevated, and wide in the middle. Totaling sixteen. The form should not be crooked in its length. The length itself should be complete and not exceed. The form's length should be clearly distinguished. These are the three general principles to be observed. Moreover, it should be sought according to the practice of the square grid-line box. The head (*phub*) and shoulder (*dpungpa*) are one part. The descending stroke (*zag mchu*) is two parts. The leg (*rkangpa*) is three parts. For 'ca', 'cha', 'ra', 'a', being too long is a fault. For 'da', 'na', 'zha', being either too long or too short is a fault. For 'ka', 'ga', 'sha', being too short is a fault. The attached (subscript/superscript) is four parts. The upper limb (*yanlag*) is two parts. The side of the ruling line (*thig shing logs*) is made into six parts. It is said that writing by avoiding these faults is a general (coarse) method. The detailed understanding must be gained through practice. Many derivations of the *bruchen* (great letter style) *lilugs* (Li style) and *denlugs* (Den style). Among the block scripts (*gshar ma*) of Tibetan writing, the *bruchen* (large letter style) that became supreme, its *lilugs* (Li style) writing tradition has ceased. Perhaps it is the style of Denma Tsemang. Because the letters possess (standard) measurements, it is called *denlugs* (Den style), which is drawn from within the large measurement system (*thig tshad che ba*) (138na), and its form is similar to *bruchung* (small letter style) which has small measurements. These eighteen or so different *brutsa* (types of letters) are the original fundamental writing tradition. From that, *tsegbris* (dot writing) emerged, arranged squarely like dots. From that, the smoother *zlumbris* (round writing). Its legs and upper limbs extended, *bahho*. From that, shortened, *sugthung* (short leg). From that, the softer *dgraris* (corner writing). The legs drawn inwards and bent, *sumcha chags* (three-part break). From that, the softer *sugskor* (curled leg). From that, the easier *trinyig kyusma* (ordinary letter for messages). And for all of these, there are very many different regional writing traditions. Third, [Teaching the Method of Writing]: Learn skillfully the proportions, writing base, ink, and pen. Purity and cleanliness are essential for all, great and small. Write scriptures carefully and without errors in sequence. Other endless types of writing styles are not sufficient for elaboration. Firstly, it is important to learn the proportions and forms of writing. Moreover, for those scribes who frequently write scriptures, the *Uchen drum* (dbu-can 'bru ma)...

Cherish the intricate circular diagrams. For virtuous spiritual teachers (Geshe), cherish short manuscripts and drafts. For local officials, cherish official documents and inspection records. For other people, cherish letters. By such teachings, each person should especially practice their own calligraphy. When writing proficiently, the foundation for writing—paper, and the tools for writing—cinnabar ink, black ink, and pens, these tasks should be expertly learned and carefully mastered according to ancient treatises and reliable traditional practices, thereby becoming comparable to the handiwork of ancient scholars. These too are extracted from the extensive and concise expressions and countless practical details found in ancient treatises. Now, summarizing and applying those methods currently in practice, and explaining a portion of them: The foundation for writing characters, And three kinds: writing tools, writing materials. The first also has excellent, medium, and inferior grades. Excellent is paper pulp plant and `dung lo ma` leaf (a paper-making plant). Those grown in black earth and sandy ground, In places without clay and cliffs, are excellent. Those grown in sandy soil, red earth, and infertile land, Have a yellowish color, are difficult to dye, and hard in texture. Those with thick bark and insects are inferior. After carefully gathering, wash off the soil, Peel off the outer bark, scrape off the rough parts, and extract the essence. Burned pebbles are cast into cold water, Stirred to thicken the consistency. When slightly fermented, tasting it on the tongue, If it stings like rock salt, it is a sign of excellence. If it does not proceed as intended, its vigor will not arise. Filter it and let it settle, in the pure, Liquid, boil the paper pulp plant. Even if boiled with ash water, it will achieve some effect. After boiling, pound it firmly in a stone mortar. Once it has become like gruel, take a measure, In a partitioned vessel with an equal amount of Water, and stir it together. In still, clear, unclouded water, Place the paper mould level, then pour it in. With this material, either thin or thick is good. Medium grade is `akaru` bark (a paper-making plant). The middle bark peeled after the green outer layer, Boil it for a short while, and extract its liquid. Boiling, pounding, stirring, and pouring are as above. For scriptures, thick paper is particularly good. Inferior grade is digging up `re'u lchag` root (a paper-making plant). Removing the outer skin and inner core, Primarily treat the middle bark with lime water. If treated with ash water, it will become soft like cotton. Poison…
