Written in sequence, these are called 'Sna-ma' (nose/point). In the early period of the later dissemination of the Dharma (137a), during the time of the master-disciple pair known as Dro Nyasha Ri and Thongwa Dorje Ponlob, four types of 'golden plates' (gser-leb grub-bzhi) emerged, making a total of nine stages (styles). After that, a person named Khyungpo Yuthri Bar took the lines of the mandala as an example, dividing (the script) into large and small parts, and composed treatises on lines, penmanship, paper cutting, writing methods, and so forth, thus nurturing innumerable disciples. From these, two styles emerged: the Frog Style (sBal-lugs) and the Mang Style (Mang-lugs), which are said to be those currently found in Phenyul (modern Phenpo, north of Lhasa) and Ngor (Ngor Ewam Choden Monastery) respectively. Eight treasures, ten strokes, twenty-one mother dharma principles, and sixteen son dharma principles, accompanied by three common dharma principles. The eight precious aspects common to these styles are: Precious is the rounded ink-path with clear strokes, Precious is the short arm born from a solitary stroke, Precious is the corner line for the suspended stroke, Precious is the belly for the upper-covered stroke, Precious is the drawn belly for the lower-covered stroke, Precious is the trailing after-ride for leg-like strokes, Precious is the extending stroke-pressing at the end of upward lifts, Precious is the clean neck for strokes with eyes. And so forth. Also, the ten or fourteen renowned 'strokes' ('don-pa) are: 'Khang-mgo' (house-head) is to lift upwards, 'Khrang-dpung' (strong-shoulder) is to lift upwards, 'Dro-sbo-them' (stroke-belly-edge) is for a protruding stroke, 'Shan-mar' (butcher-down) is for dragging downwards, 'Jang-khog-pa' (wolf-belly) is for a hollow stroke, 'Hram-snag-sna' (scribble-ink-nose) is for an ink-point, 'Hur-mig-'dril' (whirl-eye-roll) is for a rolled eye, 'Yer-yar-'phul' (push-upwards) is for pushing upwards, 'Yang-ya-btags' (again-ya-affix) is for upward affix, 'Drung-zags-mchu' (sharp-flowing-beak) is for a sharp beak, 'Zang-mgo-dpung' (good-head-shoulder) is for a good head and shoulder, 'Dzum-dkar-nag-sna' (smile-white-black-nose) is for a white and black tip, 'Nyen-bsnol-mtshams' (friend-crossing-juncture) is at the crossing point, 'Khyug-yan-lag' (swift-limb) is for swift limbs. And so forth. The twenty-one Mother Principles are: **Three Heads (mGo gsum):** Excellent (head) like a rope cut round by a knife, Medium (head) like a bow, Inferior (head) like a dot's head (tsag-mgo). (137b) **Three Shoulders/Arms (dpung gsum):** Excellent (arm) like holding a vajra at the heart, Medium (arm) like shooting an arrow, Inferior (arm) like a broken arm lying horizontally. **Three Bellies (sBo gsum):** Excellent (belly) like the back of a knife with clear strokes, Medium (belly) like twisting a wool string, Inferior (belly) like an ant's waist. **Three Flowing Beaks (zag-mchu gsum):** Excellent (beak) like a short, sharp slanted joint, Medium (beak) like a pig's nose, Inferior (beak) like an elephant's nose. **Three Upward Pulls (yar-'then gsum):** Excellent (upward pull) like a standing sewing needle, Medium (upward pull) like a raised banner pole, Inferior (upward pull) like a severed hand. **Three Downward Pulls (mar-'then gsum):** Excellent (downward pull) like the foot of a door latch, Medium (downward pull) like a puppy's tail, Inferior (downward pull) like a worm's tail and a fly's leg. **Three Eyes (mig gsum), totaling twenty-one:** Excellent (eye) like a fish eye, Medium (eye) like a barley grain, Inferior (eye) like a triangular angry eye.
