From this distinction, the twelve handspans, ten handspans, nine handspans, etc., are clearly explained. What is stated in the `Four Seats Tantra` commentary, the `Mantra Am Sa`, is mostly similar to this, apart from translational differences, but the ninth face measurement (zhal tshad) is not clearly explained. The distorted explanation made by Acharya Ratnaraksita in his commentary on the `Samvarodaya Tantra` is because, at that time, the artists in Magadha and Nepal, without critical examination, depicted according to what was popular. Therefore, this should not be taken as the true meaning of the `Samvarodaya Tantra`. The `Red and Black Yamantaka Tantra` also explains the eighth face measurement. Furthermore, in what is known as the `Sutra Requested by Shariputra`, which was likely a later translation from a Nepali text, it is mostly in agreement with the teachings of the `Kalachakra Tantra`. This sutra is also cited appropriately in the `Kriya Samuccaya`. Moreover, some Chinese treatises (rgya gzhung) that were popular in earlier times also agree with these, and minor differences seem to follow the previously mentioned tantras (120na). Regarding some of these (statements), the refutations and assertions made by later scholars hold no essence, because: The domains of craftsmanship and the compounding of medicines, The tantric rituals and the profoundly deep nature of Dharma, These are not to be examined by means of rational logic, It is proper to abandon self-assertion and arrogance. —Thus spoke the Great Jetsun of Jonang. The measuring unit is thirteen and a half finger-widths (rang sor), Or twelve handspans (thal mo), applied to five types of measurements; The first and second (measurements) are according to the `Kalachakra` and `Samvarodaya` systems; The third and fourth (measurements) are nine handspans and eight handspans; These are directly taught in the sutras and tantras, so one should strive diligently. Regarding the specific terms for these measuring units, thirteen and a half or twelve finger-widths of the deity's body itself is called one face measurement (zhal tshad). That face measurement (zhal tshad) has five names, namely: a span (mtho), a handspan (thal mo), a palm (mthil), a great division (cha chen). These larger and smaller face measurements are to be applied according to the two systems of tantras. One finger-width (rang sor) is called a small division (cha chung); one quarter of that is called a foot (rkang pa); and one eighth of that is called a barleycorn (nas). The fundamental measurement divisions measured by these are five types: the first is one hundred and twenty-five (units), the second is one hundred and twenty (units), both according to the systems of `Kalachakra` and `Samvarodaya`; and the third...

And the fourth is the ninth palm and the eighth palm. These four systems of divine measurement are explicitly taught in the Sutras and Tantras, untainted by the intelligent creations of scholars, hence the wise should diligently strive to practice them. \t\t\tFor Sugatas, Bodhisattvas, wrathful ones, and those free from attachment, apply appropriately. \t\t\tThe fourth is for those who are extremely wrathful. \t\t\tThe six-palm measurement is a later Tibetan (བོད་ཀྱི་, Tibet, bö kyi, 藏地) tradition. \t\t\tThese three measurement systems should be applied, after rational analysis, to male and female Sugatas, male and female Bodhisattvas, chief male and female wrathful deities of the mandala, supreme emanations (nirmanakayas) free from attachment, and so forth, as appropriate. (127b) The fourth measurement system, on the other hand, is to be applied to extremely wrathful ones, such as Yamantaka (Gshin rje gshed) and Vajrapani (Phyag rdor), and so forth. Regarding the fifth measurement system, which uses the six-palm measure, it is said to be for drawing figures like messengers (pho nya) and rakshasas (srin po), exemplified by Mahakala And the tradition that Mahakala (མ་ཧཱ་ཀཱ་ལ་, महाकाल, Mahākāla, Great Black One) is described with a three-face measurement, and such, are later systems of Tibetan (བོད་ཀྱི་, Tibet, bö kyi, 藏地) scholars and adepts. There are also some Nepalese (བལ་པོའི་, Nepal, bal po’i, 尼泊尔) scholars like Ratnarakshita who state that Ganesha (ཚོགས་ཀྱི་བདག་པོ་) and others have a five-face measurement. \t\t\tThe practical application of these is not fully elaborated here; if one wishes to understand, one should refer to the revered Jetsun Rinpoche's (རྗེ་བཙུན་རིན་པོ་ཆེ་) scripture, "The Source of Bliss: Teachings on the Proportions of Statues" (སྐུ་གཟུགས་ཀྱི་ཆ་ཚད་བསྟན་པ་བདེ་སྐྱིད་འབྱུང་གནས་), which is exceptional even among general Indian (རྒྱ་གཞུང་, India, rgya gzhung, 印度) treatises. \t\t\tRegarding the method of applying the four measurement systems, from that very text: \t\t\tMale and female Tathagatas are similar in aspect, \t\t\tMale and female Bodhisattvas are similar in aspect. \t\t\tBorn from the lineage of Victors, they are the Sons of Victors, \t\t\tTherefore, Bodhisattvas are also similar to Buddhas. \t\t\tThese three measurement systems \t\t\tAre to be applied appropriately to all male and female Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. \t\t\tEven if one prefers to apply them separately, \t\t\tDue to the distinction of subtle/coarse for peaceful/wrathful. \t\t\tOne hundred and twenty-five (units) for peaceful Buddhas, \t\t\tAnd one hundred and twenty (units) for Herukas \t\t\tDue to some specific characteristics of the glorious Heruka's (ཧེ་རུ་ཀ་) form, \t\t\tThere are also occasions when the eighth palm is used. \t\t\tChenma (སྤྱན་མ་) and Tara (སྒྲོལ་མ་), etc., are similar to peaceful (deities). \t\t\tVajravarahi (རྡོ་རྗེ་ཕག་མོ་) is similar to Heruka (ཧེ་རུ་ཀ་). \t\t\tAlthough there is no ushnisha (protuberance on the crown), the jewel on the crown, \t\t\tWhen applied in its place, there is no impropriety. \t\t\tWithout ushnisha, and with breasts and bhaga (བྷ་ག་, भग, bhaga, vulva), \t\t\twaist
