It is said that this is the tenet of the disrespectful naked ascetics (Nirgrantha, or certain non-Buddhist ascetics), thus understanding this is extremely important. Although there are countless divisions in its traditions, the craft of the three doors (body, speech, and mind) encompasses not only the art of craft but also all knowledge. Therefore, scholars have established such a framework. Although the mind precedes all, that which primarily involves actions of the body aroused by the mind is body craft. This is like the first two of the renowned three: dance, line drawing, and melody. That which primarily involves speech is speech craft. This is like the third (melody). That which does not primarily involve body or speech, but is accomplished by the mind, is mind craft. This is like special knowledge arising from thought. The second (section) has three parts: 1. Body craft, 2. Speech craft, 3. Explanation of mind craft. The first (of these) has two parts: 1. Superior, 2. Ordinary. The first (of these two) has two parts: 1. Brief exposition, 2. Extensive explanation. The first (part) is: The supreme body craft is the support for body, speech, and mind. Regarding body craft, there are two types: principal and ordinary. The superior or principal one refers to: body supports such as painted and sculpted images of the Victorious Ones; speech supports such as Indian and Tibetan script types; mind supports such as stupas and various types of symbols or attributes, and so on. These will be explained in sequence, as stated. The second (part) [Extensive explanation] has three parts: 1. Explanation of body supports, 2. Speech supports, 3. Mind supports. The first (of these) also has three parts: 1. Explanation of the characteristics of the craftsman, consecration, etc., 2. Proportions of the deities to be supported, 3. Brief mention of the magnificent palace (Vimana) as a support. The first (part) is: A divine craftsman is skilled, pure, and observes vows. Has received inner tantric initiation and maintains samaya. Consecrates materials and tools together. Regarding the craftsman who creates the supports, there are two types: faults and qualities. First, the faults. In the 'Ocean of Prosperity' it is said: Unskilled in qualities, greatly arrogant, Unpleasant to associate with, desires reverence. Immediately speaks harshly, greatly desires profit, Constantly demands excessive wages and fees. Even then not satisfied, steals materials, Abandons work over trivial matters. Threatens to leave and seeks dark beer (alcohol), Such a person turns virtuous deeds into sinful ones. (A craftsman should) not possess such faults as described. From Sambhuṭi: Gentle and agreeable

Arriving at the bloom of youth, Faculties clear, free from conceptual thoughts. Without anger, not engaging in slander, Extremely learned and greatly joyful. Possessing patience and great compassion. Thus it is stated. In "The Ocean of Glory/Wealth" (125a): Having few desires and easy to honor, Learned, without arrogance, and obedient. Reverent towards deities and of good conduct. As it appears (or is stated). When engaging in the work, endowed with the qualities of being learned in nature and the characteristics of craftsmanship, for the body of liberation and the outer deities of secret mantra, one should maintain purity and cleanliness, and possess the upasaka/upasika vows. For the inner deities of secret mantra, having received empowerment, possessing samaya vows and deity yoga, one must set boundaries so that ordinary people cannot see, and repeatedly offer ritual cakes and sacred substances. All artisans should be visualized as Vairochana or Yamantaka. It is also stated that the materials for the image and the tools should be generated as Vairochana. The measuring lines and colors should be blessed by the rituals arising from the mandala liturgy. The scribe is Amitabha. The pen and ink should also be blessed, as explained in texts such as "Phrang ba" (Garland). It is very important to definitely put all these into practice when first beginning the work. Furthermore, regarding the patrons who provide the conditions for constructing images, there are two aspects: faults and virtues. Firstly, in "The Ocean of Glory/Wealth" it states: Not afraid of sin, with little faith and aspiration, Not seeing benefits, thus disbelieving. Having no intention to practice, or even if having it, (Doing it) for the sake of this life's wealth and desire for fame. Expanding the mind inappropriately with conditions, Short-tempered, narrow-minded, with little patience. Disparaging deities and artisans, Regretting and abandoning the work midway. Therefore, it is necessary that a patron never possesses these faults thus explained. Secondly, from the same (text): Possessing wisdom that sees benefits, Possessing meditation of single-pointed mind. Possessing stable and joyful diligence, Possessing patience not disheartened by hardship. Possessing ethical conduct with long endurance and gentle words, Possessing generosity that is unwavering and ready to give. Possessing faith and reverence towards deities and artisans, Gradually cultivating joy. Thus it is stated. (125b) Also, from the Immovable Tantra: Painted images fully accomplished with correct proportions.
