The schools of these masters are now widely renowned, hence their distinct terminologies are preserved. "Ste" is a connective particle (lhag-chas kyi sgra). Fourth, [Incidentally mentioning other traditions]: The "Treasury of Reasoning" (Rig-gter), the unique "Ocean of Scholarly Traditions" (Rig-zhung rgya-mtsho), and The traditions of the ancient masters, etc., are distinct. Sakya Pandita's "Treasury of Logic and Epistemology" (Tshad-ma rigs-pa'i gter) with its auto-commentary, chapter eleven, which comprises two The masters of Kyetsal (Skye-tshal): Color white, red, substantial phenomena, phenomena of inversions, two; Contradictory and non-contradictory, general and specific, two; Related and unrelated, different and non-different, two; Concomitant and reverse concomitance, cause and effect, two; Anterior decisive, middle decisive, posterior decisive, definer and defined, two; Many signs, many elucidations, refutations and modes of increase, two; Directly contradictory, indirectly contradictory, pervading equally, two states; Being and non-being, being's negation and non-being's negation, two; Known to exist, known not to exist, direct cognition and inferential cognition, two. Although there are many ways of classifying, such as these eighteen categories, (121a) they are primarily subsumed within these. Second, summarizing into the eight terms of reasoning and the three loci: All that is expressed in the treatises on valid cognition, Together with direct perception, inference, and seeming (invalid) cognitions, are for one's own knowing; By means of establishment, refutation, and seeming (invalid) arguments, Cause others to understand the eight terms of reasoning. Summarizing all that is expressed in the treatises on valid cognition: direct perception and inference, two. Each of these also has valid and seeming...

With the addition of "aspects," there are two, meaning four methods for oneself to realize or understand. As for "affirmative statements" and "refutations," each is further divided into "valid" and "fallacious," making four. These four are methods for making others understand, hence they are known as the eight expressions of logical reasoning, which are subsumed under the two categories of one's own purpose and others' purpose. In summary, the objects of knowledge are three: manifest, hidden, and very hidden. The means of knowledge are direct perception, inference, and pure scripture of the three analyses. Direct perception has four types, and inference has three types of reasons (arguments). Various conventions arise from these. Summarizing all meanings of valid cognition, the objects of knowledge are three: manifest, hidden, and very hidden. The means of knowledge—direct perception, inference, and pure scripture purified by the three analyses—encompass everything measured by them. Furthermore, manifest objects of knowledge, from the perspective of ordinary beings, are the five sense-fields—form, sound, smell, taste, and touch—which can be directly experienced by others' perception and are capable of eliminating superimposition through the power of direct experience. Also included are the six consciousness-fields, which are experienced by self-cognizing valid cognition and are capable of eliminating superimposition through the gateway of reasoning, being merely the objects of experience within consciousness. Additionally, a part of the dharma-field, which is the experiential cognitive aspect of mental factors. For Noble Ones, the nature of selflessness, such as the sixteen aspects of impermanence of the Four Noble Truths, and for Buddhas, all knowable objects are considered manifest by realists (Vaibhashikas), although Dharmakirti stated that the Buddha's mode of knowing is inconceivable. The direct perceptions (means of knowledge) for these objects of knowledge are four: sense direct perception, mental direct perception, self-cognizing direct perception, and yogic direct perception. Hidden objects of knowledge include the physical sense faculties, the impermanence of the Four Noble Truths, the suffering of change, the emptiness of a self (person), the sixteen aspects such as selflessness, and the selflessness of persons and phenomena represented by these. Also included are the relationship of identity and causality, causes or potencies, the seeds of defilements and purifications within the mind, and the actions of abandonment and counteraction, etc. These are hidden objects of knowledge for both (persons and phenomena) because they must be established solely by arguments based on the power of things (i.e., logical inference). Furthermore, these objects of knowledge cannot be realized by individual direct perception and thus depend on pure scriptural sources. The means for these objects of knowledge... (Incomplete)
