The subject (topic). Impermanence is the probandum (property to be proven). Sound is impermanent is the proposition to be proven. Being produced is the reason (or probans). A vase is a positive example. Furthermore, the way in which the sound itself, presented as the subject of debate, is established as "produced" (the reason), must be concordantly established in the minds of both the presenter of the argument and the recipient. What is thus established is the meaning established by the valid cognition of the property of the subject. Being produced is pervasively concomitant (with impermanence) (positive concomitance). What is not produced is pervasively concomitant with permanence (negative concomitance). If divided according to a definite number, valid reasons are of three types: effect, nature, and non-apprehension. If divided by purpose, there are two types of valid reasons: for oneself and for others. From the perspective of proving method, there are many divisions, such as proving the meaning (substance) and proving the convention (term) (119b). That which lacks the three modes is a fallacious reason. Among these, there are many such as contradictory reasons, inconclusive reasons, and unestablished reasons. These fallacious reasons should be rejected. In these cases, examples too should be determined by means of valid examples and fallacious examples themselves. The definition of a valid example is: that which becomes the basis for definite pervasion prior to the definite establishment of the probandum. Divided into two: The definition of a valid positive example is: that which becomes the basis for the prior definite establishment of positive concomitance before the definite establishment of the probandum. For example, presenting a vase as a positive example when proving sound is impermanent by "being produced." The definition of a valid dissimilar example is: that which becomes the basis for the actual definite establishment of negative concomitance for the purpose of the definite establishment of the probandum. For example, presenting space as a dissimilar example when proving sound is impermanent by "being produced." The definition of a fallacious example is: that which is taken as the basis for definite pervasion for the purpose of the definite establishment of the probandum, but is unable to be definitely established. Moreover, the many faults of reasons and examples should also be determined and abandoned by means of these. Inference for others, by both disputants established, Three-mode proving statement, endowed with two limbs, Eliminating reasons, refutations, consequences and so on, Abandoning fallacious appearances, prove by means of the valid itself. This is greatly renowned among later generations. The definition of a valid inference for others or a valid proving statement is: the presenter of that proving statement, the disputant himself and the opponent...

A two-branched inferential statement that establishes a conclusion equally acceptable to both the proponent and opponent, possessing the three modes without omission or excess. Among these, the homogeneous application (direct concomitance) is: "Whatever is produced, is necessarily impermanent." For example, like a pot. This is like the statement "sound is produced." The heterogeneous application (contra-concomitance) is: "Whatever is permanent, is necessarily unproduced." For example, like space. This is like the statement "sound is produced." The definition of a fallacious inferential statement is: any inferential statement that possesses a flaw in either cognition, meaning, or expression, thereby contradicting the three modes. The definition of what is to be established by a valid reason is: that which can only be understood by relying on a valid reason. For example, "The subject, being produced, is impermanent, like a pot." There are two types: for oneself (svarthānumāna) and for others (parārthānumāna). Both of these have: valid and fallacious. The definition of refutation is: any fallacious thesis whose contradictory meaning is established by a valid cognition. For example, "Sound, being a phenomenon, overly becomes unheard." The definition of a valid confutation is: a statement that, by identifying a fault as a fault, enables one to understand it as faulty. The definition of a fallacious confutation is: the opposite of that. The definition of a valid consequence (prasanga) is: a statement of consequence that cannot be refuted by a reply. The definition of a fallacious consequence is: the opposite of that. Among these, the definition of a proponent is: an individual who claims to be able to establish the antecedent proposition (their own thesis). The definition of an opponent is: an individual who claims to be able to refute the antecedent proposition (the opponent's thesis). The definition of a judge (arbiter) is: an individual who claims to be able to determine the victory or defeat in the debate between the two parties. These too, having discarded the fallacious and faulty aspects, should measure the objects of knowledge with what is correct and accomplish what is desired. The purpose of studying collected topics (bsdus pa) is to easily guide new students into the realm of knowledge. By positing uncommon phenomena, the basis of debate is directly identified. By identifying this, one grasps the key points of refutation and establishment. As intelligence increases through this, when an opponent attacks one's own thesis, one can offer the three replies—"the reason is unproven," "the pervasion is nonexistent," and "it is accepted"—without confusion, thereby seizing the opponent's confidence. And concerning what others have asserted, one can precisely grasp its inference, pervasion, and object through scripture and reasoning. (120b) This brief explanation of the path and tradition of logic is for future generations.
