conceptual, non-conceptual. \t\t\tErroneous and non-erroneous, self-cognizing and other-cognizing, \t\t\tMind and mental factors, are all included. \t\t\tIntellect (བློ), awareness (རིག་པ), and consciousness (ཤེས་པ་) are synonymous in meaning. \t\t\tCategorized, there are: valid cognition, invalid cognition, conceptual, non-conceptual, erroneous, non-erroneous, self-cognizing, other-cognizing, mind, and mental factors, totaling ten. \t\t\tAmong these, the definition of valid cognition is: an intellect that newly apprehends its object. \t\t\tThe definition of invalid cognition is: an intellect that does not newly apprehend its object. \t\t\tThe definition of conceptual cognition is: if it is its appearing object, it must be a universal. \t\t\tThe definition of non-conceptual cognition is: any cognition which, if it is its appearing object, must be either a particular or an unestablished base (117b). \t\t\tThe definition of erroneous cognition is: cognition that apprehends something as what it is not. \t\t\tThe definition of non-erroneous cognition is: cognition that apprehends the true nature of the object. \t\t\tThe definition of self-cognizing is: the apprehending consciousness. \t\t\tThe definition of other-cognizing is: the apprehended consciousness. \t\t\tThe definition of mind is: among the object and its characteristics, it cognizes merely the object. \t\t\tCategorized, there are: six or eight collections of consciousness. \t\t\tThe definition of mental factors is: cognizing the characteristics of the object. \t\t\tCategorized, there are: fifty-one. \t\t\tAlthough the former also possess many internal subdivisions, they are not elaborated here. \t\t\tRegarding direct perception: \t\t\tSense, mental, self-cognizing, yogic direct perception are the four. \t\t\tInferred through the power of facts, well-known, reliable inference, etc. \t\t\tThere are many avenues of classification, and the result of valid cognition is understood incidentally. \t\t\tIf valid cognition is classified by definitive number, there are two: direct valid cognition and inferential valid cognition. \t\t\tThe definition of direct valid cognition is: that which is non-conceptual and non-erroneous, and which newly apprehends its object. This applies to all four direct perceptions. \t\t\tThe definition of direct perception is: non-conceptual and non-erroneous consciousness. Categorized, there are: sense, mental, self-cognizing, and yogic direct perception, these four. \t\t\tThe definition of the first (sense direct perception) is: non-conceptual and non-erroneous other-cognizing consciousness directly produced from its dominant condition, the physical sense faculty. Categorized, there are: apprehending-apprehender sense direct perception, etc., five. \t\t\tThe definition of the second (mental direct perception) is: non-conceptual and non-erroneous other-cognizing consciousness directly produced from its dominant condition, the mental faculty. Categorized, there are: apprehending-apprehender mental direct perception

Three and so forth, five. Third (consciousness)'s definition is: The apprehending consciousnesses focused solely internally, existing above all (consciousnesses). Fourth (consciousness)'s definition is: The stainless, non-erroneous wisdom (117b) of the Noble Ones, arisen from the power of meditating on the true meaning. In terms of classification: there are three: the directly perceived yogic perception of Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Mahayana practitioners. For example, like the Path of Seeing of the Shravakas, and the Path of Seeing of the Pratyekabuddhas. Inferential valid cognition's (inference's) definition is: A mind that newly understands its own hidden object (referent) by relying on a reason endowed with the three modes. In terms of classification: it has three types. Inference by the power of facts is: For example, a mind that understands sound to be impermanent by relying on the reason 'being a product'. Inference by convention is: For example, an inference that understands 'moon' to be conventionally expressible by the word 'rabbit-bearer', relying on a reason existing in the object of comprehension. Inference by belief (reliable scripture) is: For example, a mind that understands that scriptures like 'giving leads to prosperity', based on scripture purified by the three analyses, are not deceptive regarding their own indicated meaning. Within the scope of 'etc.', the classifications of valid cognition, such as 'self-certain' and 'other-certain', are also derived from this, indicating many divisions. And the result of valid cognition is also said to be understood from the concomitants of these (valid cognitions). Although there are many presentations on this, in short, it refers to the result of a presentation made in reliance on the cause of the presentation. For example, 'the non-mistaken apprehension of blue' is the basis of illustration; 'a consciousness arising in conformity with the object's meaning' is the definition; 'the conventional expression that can be applied to understanding the meaning of form' is the result of valid cognition. Regarding inference: Sound is the object to be known. From the reason endowed with the three modes, which proves sound to be impermanent, an image of impermanent sound arises, and a consciousness that is newly non-deceptive regarding impermanent sound is valid cognition. The direct understanding of sound as impermanent is the result of inference. (118a) Third [Elaborated explanation of the means of understanding] is: The means of understanding are: Contradiction, connection, negation, affirmation, general, particular, One and many, exclusion and inclusion, other-exclusion, defined and defining, substance and isolate, two types of inference.
