Then, the establishment of substantial phenomena, negating phenomena, and the two types of inference. Among these, the definition of contradiction is: existing incompatibly, like light and darkness. The definition of connection is: if that which is separate from that phenomenon is negated, then the substantial phenomenon itself is negated, like a golden vase. The definition of negation is: any phenomenon for which the appearance of its general meaning depends on the appearance of the general meaning of that which it negates. The definition of affirmation (or establishment) is: any phenomenon for which the appearance of its general meaning does not depend on the appearance of the general meaning of that which it negates, for example, a vase. The definition of generality is: that which extends to many. The definition of particularity is: you are that phenomenon; you are integrally connected as one with that phenomenon; many (others) that are not you but are that phenomenon are not established. For example, a golden vase, you are that phenomenon; the vase and the gold are integrally connected as one. Many (other) copper vases and clay vases that are not golden vases but are the phenomenon of a vase are not established. The definition of one is: any phenomenon that does not appear as separate in conceptual thought, like white. The definition of difference is: the basis is established. That phenomenon and its proper name are understood as different. Substantial difference, like a pillar and a vase. Negational difference, like what is produced and impermanent. The definition of exclusionary apprehension (sel-juk) is: any object of that phenomenon, even if all phenomena with the same pervasion of “is” as that phenomenon exist, you do not take it as an object. Like the certainty of understanding a vase. The definition of inclusive apprehension (drub-juk) is: any object of that phenomenon, if all phenomena with the same pervasion of “is” as that phenomenon exist, you then take it as an object. Like focusing on the general meaning (118b). Alternatively, the definition of these two is: it is permissible to say “taking it as an object by dividing it into parts” and “not taking it as an object by dividing it into parts.” The definition of other-exclusion (gzhan-sel) is: a phenomenon that is to be understood by definitively cutting off its own object of exclusion through words. For example, by saying “this is a man,” it excludes being a woman, or by saying “there is no mountain,” it excludes there being a mountain. The definition of a definition is: that which possesses the three dharma-properties (don-chos-gsum). The definition of a non-definition is: that which does not possess the three dharma-properties. Here, the “three dharma-properties” refer to: substance, existence, and phenomenon. Particles are established as substance, entities exist as existence, and “phenomenon” and “knowable” are synonymous, hence existing as phenomenon. The definition of the defined is: difference.

Possessing the three characteristics of the proposition (thesis). \t\t\tThe definition of an improper thesis is: not possessing the three characteristics of the proposition. \t\t\tThe three characteristics of the proposition are: what is known, what is stated, and what is applied. \t\t\tIncidentally, the definition of a 'defined basis' (mtshan gzhi) is: that which becomes the basis for the definition to express the defined object. \t\t\tIf we classify faults of definition, there are three types: the fault of an incomplete definition, the fault of an overly broad definition, and the fault of a definition not residing in its defined object. \t\t\tExamples respectively: When "having a hump, etc., and being multicolored" is posited as the definition of a cow, it is like "having a hump, etc., and being multicolored" not pervading all cows. When "having a head" is posited as the definition of a cow, it is like "having a head" being overly pervasive for a cow. When "having a hump, etc." is posited to define a horse (which is not a cow), it is like "having a hump, etc." not residing in a horse. \t\t\tAlternatively, they are classified into eight types of semblances. \t\t\tThe definition of a substantial entity is: that which can accomplish the purpose of a person, such as form (rupa). \t\t\tThe definition of a substantial phenomenon is: a quality of form (rupa) that has become the nature of a substantial phenomenon, such as the impermanence of form. \t\t\tThe definition of a conceptual isolate (ldog pa) is: any phenomenon that appears to the conceptual mind as being distinct from its non-homologous kind, and which is not a substantial entity, such as appearing as a form to the conceptual mind. \t\t\tThe definition of an isolated phenomenon (ldog chos) is: any phenomenon that appears to the conceptual mind as a quality of a substantial entity, and which is not a substantial entity, such as the impermanence of form appearing to the conceptual mind. \t\t\tFor self-interest inference, the three modes are the valid sign. \t\t\tAbandon incomplete semblances, contradictory signs, and so forth. \t\t\tExamples are also determined by those very (principles). \t\t\tIf self-interest inference is specifically distinguished, there are the property of the subject, the forward pervasion, and the reverse pervasion; possessing these three modes is the definition of a valid sign. \t\t\tThe definition of the property of the subject (phyogs chos) is: the manner in which the sign is certainly established by a valid cognizer, in accordance with the way it is posited, upon the object of investigation for which the sign is being proven. \t\t\tThe definition of the forward pervasion (rjes khyab) is: the manner in which the sign is certainly established to exist only in homogeneous instances, in accordance with the way it is being proven. \t\t\tThe definition of the reverse pervasion (ldog khyab) is: the manner in which the sign is certainly established to exist only as absent from heterogeneous instances, in accordance with the way it is being proven. \t\t\tFor example: When sound is posited as impermanent, it is like stating, "Sound, the property of the subject, is impermanent, because it is produced. For example, like a vase, sound is also produced." \t\t\tSound is a contentious object (rtog, debate).
