Those endowed [with such qualities] are like the fundamental (108b). This 'like the fundamental' is what I alone shall explain. 'Like the fundamental' means to perfectly illuminate the characteristics of the knowable. Thus, after explaining the Four Foundations of Mindfulness and so forth, the Arhats mutually ascertained [the teachings], and even the terrestrial deities specially proclaimed [it], its sound instantly reaching up to the Akaniṣṭha heaven. Hence, this council is renowned as the 'Council of Five Hundred'. Furthermore, the Skandhas, Dependent Origination, Factors of Enlightenment, Discourses, Long, Middle, Anguttara (Numerical) and so forth were arranged. Vinaya and Abhidharma were likewise. So, how was the compilation done? As for the Sutras, those endowed with skandhas were compiled into the Skandha collection; those endowed with sense-bases into the Sense-base collection; those endowed with dependent origination and the wisdom of the Noble Truths were placed into the section with an introductory basis. Those with many explanations by Śrāvakas were placed in the Śrāvaka explanations; those with many explanations by the Buddha were placed in the Buddha's explanations; those predominantly proclaiming the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment as limbs of the path were placed in the collection of discourses truly proclaiming [the factors of enlightenment]. Those endowed with verses were separately compiled into the corresponding discourse collections. Among these, the first Sutras were placed in the Dīgha Nikāya (Long Discourses), the middle ones in the Majjhima Nikāya (Middle Discourses), and those from one to ten verses in the Aṅguttara Nikāya (Numerical Discourses) and so forth. As for the Vinaya, the five categories of downfalls, the seven dharmas for settling disputes, the primary precepts and secondary precepts, individual prohibitions and permissions, the acts of formal request (karma-vācanā), the seventeen sections, and so forth, were made into texts through the method of categorizing and differentiating into sections. The Abhidharma was also similarly compiled into distinct sections. Thus, this renowned First Council was the actual basis for the compilation of the Tripitaka common to the Śrāvakas. The duration of the Dharma's existence is stated to be a thousand years. According to the Śrāvaka (109a) tradition, regarding the duration of the Dharma's existence, as explained in the Vinaya's *Minor Texts*, it is mainly held to endure for a thousand years. Of these, five hundred years are for the true Dharma, and five hundred years are for the counterfeit Dharma (image Dharma). In the *Biography of Joyful Friend of Limit* (Rin-mtha' dga'-ba'i bsheg-kyi rtogs-brjod), it is also stated that it endures up to six hundred years for its flourishing period; a general outline will appear below.

[Summary] The unique Mahayana (teachings) in Magadha, On the mountain called Vimalasambhava in the south, Ten myriad Bodhisattvas gathered, Vajradhara (Vajrapani), Maitreya and Manjushri compiled Sutra, Vinaya, Abhidharma. Regarding this uncommon compilation, the causal Mahayana pitakas, scholars of India say that in the south of Rajagriha (Rajgir), the city in Magadha country, on the mountain called Vimalasambhava, ten myriad Bodhisattvas gathered. It is said that Vajrapani compiled the Sutras, Maitreya compiled the Vinaya, and Manjushri compiled the Abhidharma. Also, from the "Burning Logic" (Togge Barwa), it is stated: The Mahayana was taught by the Buddha, because the primary compilers were Samantabhadra, Manjushri, Guhyakapati (Vajrapani), Maitreya, and others. Our primary compilers were not Sravakas (hearers), because the teachings of Mahayana are not within their domain (understanding). Thus it is stated. Though many measures of the teachings' duration are explained in this tradition, The universally known five hundred times ten (five thousand) is currently, Said to be the chapter of transmission by Longchen (Longchenpa) and others, They hold that among the three periods of practice, it is the period of prajna (wisdom). In this Mahayana tradition, regarding what appears commonly, the long and short durations are explained according to the intent of each Sutra; and regarding what is uncommon, there are many explanations, such as speaking of immeasurable durations (folio 109b). However, what is universally known and considered meaningful by the wise ones in this land is the duration of five hundred times ten, which is five thousand (years). And from that, it is said that the present time has passed the period of result and practice, and is now the period of transmission. Omniscient Longchenpa and others, by exchanging transmission and practice, hold that among the three periods of practice, the periods of discipline and mind have been completed, and now it has reached the period where the practice of wisdom is primary. Summarizing the essence of all earlier and later views on the duration of the teachings, the Great Translator Dharmashri said: The duration of the teachings according to the Sutra tradition is: The Bhadrakalpa Vinaya, minor transmissions (texts), And by the noble Akshayamati (inexhaustible wisdom), The commentary on the teaching Sutra, And that with the golden garland.
