All casually written texts are a cause for wasting time and wisdom. As such, there is a danger of becoming an unwholesome spiritual friend, and therefore they are not objects of reliance. \t\t\tAs the Venerable Omniscient (99a) Lord of Liberation said: “Do not delight in the words of later generations! The scholars of old were accomplished ones. Nowadays, scholars mostly pretend to be learned.” It is just so. \t\t\tThis is the chapter on identifying the holy Dharma. \t\t\tThis is the commentary on the first chapter, 'Identifying the Holy Dharma'. Second Chapter: Separately Explaining the Scriptural Dharma Wheel. \t\t\t2.1 The second chapter, 'Separately Explaining the Scriptural Dharma Wheel', has two parts: 2.1 Generally Presenting the Tenets, 2.2 Separately Explaining the Dharma Wheel. \t\t\t2.1 The first is: \t\t\tAfter the Teacher manifestly became enlightened for seven weeks, \t\t\tAt the end of completion, having turned the Dharma Wheel until nirvana, \t\t\tOnly the Hinayana was taught, thus say the Shravakas. \t\t\tThe Mahayanists assert three Dharma Wheels. \t\t\tAfter the Teacher, the Bhagavan Shakyamuni, manifestly attained perfect enlightenment at the heart of Bodhi, he did not teach Dharma for seven weeks (forty-nine days). At the end of the forty-nine days, Brahma requested him, and thus he first turned the Dharma Wheel in Varanasi (Varanasi) and, until he passed into nirvana, he taught only the Hinayana Shravaka Pitaka, comprising the four noble truths. This is what the Shravaka Vaibhāṣikas (Saiddhāntika) say, and they do not accept the establishment of the latter two Dharma Wheels. \t\t\tThe Mahayanists, however, assert that the Dharma Wheel was turned in three stages, and its detailed explanation will be presented later. \t\t\t2.2 The second part [Separately Explaining the Dharma Wheel] has three points: 3.1 The Nature of the Dharma Wheel, 3.2 The Definitive Meaning of the Term, 3.3 The Classification. \t\t\t3.1 The first also has two parts: 1.1 The General Nature of the Dharma Wheel, 1.2 The Definition of the Specific Scriptural Dharma. \t\t\t1.1 The first is: \t\t\tThe nature of the Dharma Wheel is the holy Dharma that cuts off discord. \t\t\tGenerally, what is called the Dharma Wheel is the holy Dharma taught by the Teacher, which has the power to subdue and cut off opposing factors. \t\t\tThe Vaibhāṣikas say the path of seeing, and the Sutra School says the path of seeing and meditation, \t\t\tand the path of no-more-learning (99b), including the varieties of Dharma. \t\t\tThat also specifically

Speakers consider only the Path of Seeing to be the Wheel of Dharma. As stated in the Treasury (Abhidharma-kośa): The Wheel of Dharma is the Path of Seeing, Swiftly advancing, and so forth. Just as the precious wheel of a universal monarch (Chakravartin) swiftly proceeds to the desired place; abandons one region and enters another; conquers unconquered towns, villages, and so forth; establishes the conquered ones firmly; ascends in some places, and descends in others. Similarly, because it realizes the truths in fifteen moments, it swiftly advances; it abandons the Path of Uninterruptedness (Ānantarya-mārga); and it enters for the sake of manifesting the Path of Liberation (Vimukti-mārga); or it abandons other objects of the truths and enters into others. And by means of the Path of Uninterruptedness, it conquers the unconquered afflictions such as the view of a perishable aggregate (satkāya-dṛṣṭi) by cutting off their acquisition; and by means of the Path of Liberation, it firmly establishes the victory of being free from afflictions and co-emergent (defilements). And because it ascends by focusing on the form realm (rūpa-dhātu) and the formless realm (arūpya-dhātu), and descends by focusing on the desire realm (kāma-dhātu), and so forth, it is said that the Wheel of Dharma is exclusively the Path of Seeing. However, the Sautrāntikas consider all three paths—the Path of Seeing, the Path of Meditation (Bhāvanā-mārga), and the Path of No-More-Learning (Aśaikṣa-mārga)—along with the varieties of Dharma that reveal them, to be the Wheel of Dharma. As Acarya Jayaputra said: “Therefore, the varieties of Dharma themselves are also the Wheel of Dharma, because they perfectly reveal the Wheel of Dharma.” And “the Path of Seeing, the Path of Meditation, and the Path of No-More-Learning are also the Wheel of Dharma, because they are called 'wheel' as they enter into the continuum of sentient beings to be tamed.” This is what was explained. The five paths of Mahayana are established throughout all the scriptures. According to the Mahayanists, all five paths, from the Path of Accumulation (Saṃbhāra-mārga) to the Path of No-More-Learning (Aśaikṣa-mārga) (100n), are the Wheel of Dharma. As the Madhyamaka Dharma friend (Dharmamitra) said: “Some Wheels of Dharma are the Path of Accumulation. Some are the Path of Preparation (Prayoga-mārga). Some are up to the Path of Uninterruptedness (Ānantarya-mārga).” And the Path of Liberation is the supreme of all Wheels of Dharma. As extensively stated in the *Lalitavistara Sutra*: “Maitreya, that Wheel of Dharma is profound because its depth is immeasurable.” These paths illustrate the meaning to be expressed.
